Flip flops are a great shoe for self defense though. With my martial arts style, I'm most effective when barefoot so it's an easy and quick transition. Further, I've incorporated the use of my flip flops into a Krav Mag style I developed. If I'm in a fight, the first thing I do is kick out and shoot one of my flip flops into the opponents face. If it puts them to the ground, then I kick off the other show and pounce. If it misses, I quickly kick the other flip flop high into the air. While they are looking up at it, I do a flying dragon kick to their groin and knee. It's fucking indefensible.

You have to keep your foot parallel to the ground. If your heel hits first like a normal step might that thing is coming off. So the steps have to be short and your body has to stay fairly upright. And they are a more convenient option for anyone with back or knee issues that make bending down difficult, who are likely to be takin stiff, clipped steps anyways.

I can't speak for everyone but nobody I know (myself included) feels like we're hot shit in flip flops. They are convenient. That's pretty much the first, last, and only reason for their existence.
