With all the nostalgia in the 05 Manu vs 99 Dreamcast thread, thought I'd make a thread for the N64 / PS. Two great systems, for very different reasons. Lot's of great memories for both, but I feel the N64 stood out more because of their exclusive games. I'll start with some of my favorite memories of the PS..

Playstation

1. Disc based gaming - that didn't suck huge balls (looking at you Sega "Leader in Full Motion Video Throwaway Crap" CD)

2. Dat Intro - Get chills just hearing it tbh.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAhvQoLpvsM

3. First truly arcade perfect ports - MK3 was amazing. I can remember having a couple hours to play at a friends, then coming home to the shitty SNES copy with it's 2 inch tall sprites and weak sounds.

4. Pioneered polygon gaming - Toshinden, Twisted Metal, Ridge Racer come to mind

5. CD quality audio - the step up from SNES/Genesis to CD quality was groundbreaking. Having the PS hooked up to a sound system really made the experience better.

Nintendo 64

1. Super Mario F'N 64 - I can remember walking with a friend 2 miles each way to Blockbuster to rent a game. We stumbled upon an N64 promo display unit and were shocked as it was a couple of months before release. I remember hogging that shit for about an hour playing Mario 64. Classic game, brings back a ton of memories.

2. 4 controller ports - I don't know how many times we had 4 player battles on the THQ/AKI wrestling games, Starfox, Smash Brothers, and....

3. Goldeneye 64 - 5 minutes into my rental of Goldeneye 64, and my gaming life was changed. No game was like it at the time. Truly groundbreaking. I remember saving up lunch money for a month to fund the game, and skipping school to come home with friends and play.

4. Analog Stick - Paved the way for the modern controller. Made games like Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye, Mario 64 so much better.

The only other game that compares to this for me was Atari's, "Adventure". That's the game that stands out as the one that hooked me in for good. Can't think of anything else until Goldeneye. I would say that game and Starfox got me back into gaming.

Then probably God of War.

Yeah Goldeneye got me off Quakeworld for a bit until q2 came out. Grenade launchers on Temple ftw.

The loading times on the PSX were just painful :lol

The N64's controller was poorly designed, in fairness, but it had better games and comparable graphics for the time....

conker's bad fur day is hands down the most underrated game of all time. i spent countless hours on multiplayer. the bots were ridiculously hard. sniping headshots were so satisfying.

and i've said it a million times but it got to the point where i could beat OoT in one night.

Yeah, but when my game was loading, I never thought of it as a negative as I was truly convinced this was just part of the future of games :lol. As for the graphics comparison, I can remember arguing with my friends about how the N64 graphics were better, but now looking back they're all just the same 20 meter view distance foggy mess for the most part.

:tu The expansion pak, and rumble pak both changed things a bit. Feeling the guns fire in Goldeneye was the shit at that age, and Perfect Dark in High Res was so much better.

I had both both consoles and played them hardcore style.

Had a bunch of games for the 64 but somehow never did get my hands on Goldeneye. I remember having to rent or go play it somewhere else. But it was alot more fun that way because it was all about the multiplayer aspect of the game. Good lord the hours I put into that game.

Mario Kart was my shit too.

As far as the PS1 goes, my favorite of the two.

Crash Bandicoot, Dino Crisis, Driver, NASCAR Heat, Ehrgeiz, Tekken were my shit.

And of course..

This game was awe inspiring. The graphics, even though it's cinematics were top of the line for its time.

N64 and PS1 games with their blocky polygon graphics just don't age well like 8-bit NES and 16-bit SNES do tbh. Best system ever is a two horse race between NES and PS2.

Why not?

don't know, I was aware that they were the most popular games, but I was mostly a Madden addict, occasionally branching out to Mortal Kombat and Duke Nukem, Nukem 64 had pretty good multiplayer

oh and San Fransisco Rush

i had forgotten that badass PS1 intro. top shelf shit imo.

this was a dark ages of gaming for me, i just wasn't into gaming like i was before or after. I owned the PS1 but not N64. Out of PS1, off the top of my head that I loved...
Castlevania:Symphony of the Night. oh Lord, what a great game.
Metal Gear Solid - groundbreaking
Resident Evils - great times either playing with friends or by myself.
Fade to Black -underrated sequel to Flashback
MK3
Twisted Metal was fun as shit iirc

I did buy a N64 and bunch of games years after the fact, so I plan on exploring this system properly. My friend used to play it all the time and for some reason it didn't connect with me. Maybe it was the awkward controller, could be the lack of a disc (which in retrospect, wasn't a terrible idea from Nintendo considering load times.)
list of games I own and want to play (because I figure I will appreciate them)
Conkers
Zelda: Ocarina and Majoras
Mario 64 (i genuinely like Super Mario Sunshine more than what I experienced playing this back in the day, but will give it another shot).
Castlevania (i hear they're horrible on the 64 but must keep up with the series).
Mario Kart

I did have lots of great times playing Goldeneye with friends.

Twisted Metal 1 and 2 were amazing. I bought TM1 based on the cover, and it turned out to be the shit. Fun 2 player battles too.

Perfect Dark single player was pretty solid too, but the multi was a huge disappointment tbh. Chugged badly with 4 players

i have vague memories of it, like shooting aliens in some strange vaginal looking tunnel. I do own it so will check it out.

going through the Archives, I have a decent selection. I have about 29 games, I don't remember buying that many but it was spread out over a couple years.
Other ones that I will get to are Turok 2, Pilotwings, Quake II (just to see how it compares to the PC, probably not favorably), Rayman 2, Killer Instinct, Fzero, Bomberman 64, Paper Mario and Kirby 64. Some other ones but these look like the standouts. I always wanted to play Sin and Punishment and it's available on Wii Channel so I will try to buy that as well.
Good chance I will play these unlike other systems I own where I get anal retentive about putting mileage on them (ie Sega CD, Turbo Duo).

Yes, Pilotwings was one of two release games for N64, and the one I rented with my purchase at launch. Loved that fucking game, and also the original on SNES. :lmao @ the stupid reaction of the instructor when you crashed.

I never owned a PS but my cousin had one and I'd play his a lot. I didn't care too much for the CD and load times...I guess Nintendo was way ahead of the times with cartridges. I don't know why they don't go back to them tbh. You can buy thumbdrives that hold more shit than disks can and there aren't any load times.

Loved Mario, Mario Kart. Of course goldeneye; creamed my pants when I beat facility under 2 mins to get unlimited ammo...or was it all guns? I forget. Either way, pants were creamed. Rogue Squadron was tits as was Shadows of the Empire. Holy fuck. Playing in the snowspeeder and being able to fly wherever you wanted? More pants creaming. tbh Shadows is still great to play. Perfect Dark was good too. Sad day when Rare left to go make games Microsoft. :cry Rare was never the same after that.
