Moscow may force European airlines to fly around Russia

http://uk.reuters.com/article/2014/08/05/uk-ukraine-crisis-russia-airlines-idUKKBN0G50CS20140805

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev threatened on Tuesday to retaliate for the grounding of a subsidiary of national airline Aeroflot because of EU sanctions, with one newspaper reporting that European flights to Asia over Siberia could be banned.

The business daily Vedomosti reported that Russia may restrict or ban European airlines from flying over Siberia on Asian routes, a move that would impose costs on European carriers by making flights take longer and require more fuel.

Vedomosti quoted one source as saying a ban could cost airlines like Lufthansa, British Airways and Air France 1 billion euros ($1.3 billion) over three months

US says Russia has 20K troops on the Ukrainian border. If they invade, no telling how bad West-Russia "cold war" will be.

And of course, the Repugs/Fox say, will say, it's all Obama's fault for not bombing the shit out of Russia, which is another reason the Repugs should NEVER again get control of Congress and WH ... EVER!

Russia isn't going to do this. It would be financial suicide. If they start raising the stakes, they could actually piss enough people off to have some serious sanctions brought to bear against them.

They can't win. It's them vs. all of Europe and the US right now. That is not a tenable position for Moscow, especially with their financial system already struggling to cope with the current crisis.

Well, maybe the sanctions should be lifted off of Russia.

Look who started it. Putin's just playing poker the right way instead of folding.

yeah, Russian oligarchs, including VP, have $Bs stashed outside of Russia.

If the West started impounding those $Bs for Russia invading Ukraine (flight capital fleeing daily), I expect Russia would figure protecting the ethnic Russians in Ukraine wouldn't be worth the cost.

Putin was in a decent (not strong, but decent) position.

Then his miscreants shot down a civilian airline.

That completely brutalized his chances of remaining strong in this situation. His tough guy machismo (which, unsurprisingly, you have a hard on for) is such an obvious show of bluster and Europe is only going to go along with it so far.

I disagree.

The new Russia isn't the same as the old CCCP.

They supply the EU with something like 1/3rd of their oil and gas. The EU needs to watch out over this, especially since no hard evidence is presented.

Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council spokesman Andrei Lysenko told Interfax Thursday that the Ukrainian army is not equipped with the SA-11, which raises questions about where the separatists may have gotten one (if that's in fact what they used).

For their part, rebel leaders deny having any Buk missile launchers. But other militia members told Russian state media (http://en.itar-tass.com/world/738262) last month that they had "taken control" of a number of SA-11s.

Update: U.S. officials have confirmed that MH17 was downed by a surface-to-air missile, according to The Post's own Ernesto Londońo.

Who's crying for war?

US Navy destroyer, the USS Truxtun, has crossed Turkey's Bosphorus and entered the Black Sea. With the Crimea Peninsula getting ready to hold a referendum on independence from Ukraine in a week, the US is ramping up its military presence in the region.

“Given its continued provocations in Ukraine, today I have approved a new set of sanctions on some of Russia’s largest companies and financial institutions,” Obama said. “What we are expecting that the Russian leadership will see, once again, that its actions in Ukraine have consequences, including a weakening Russian economy and increasing diplomatic isolation.”

The Obama administration is sharing some intelligence and non-lethal equipment (like night-vision goggles and armored vehicles) with the Ukrainian army, and is preparing to up its support for Ukrainian National Guard training.

But Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin joined prominent Republicans in asking Obama to go further. He called for defensive weapons to be sent to Kiev, including ammunition and anti-aircraft missiles, after a closed-door briefing with Pentagon officials.

hope the warmongers can shut their piehole for a minute and read the following:

The facts speak clear and loud and are beyond the realm of speculation: The cockpit shows traces of shelling! You can see the entry and exit holes. The edge of a portion of the holes is bent inwards. These are the smaller holes, round and clean, showing the entry points most likely that of a 30 millimeter caliber projectile. (Revelations of German Pilot: Shocking Analysis of the “Shooting Down” of Malaysian MH17. “Aircraft Was Not Hit by a Missile” Global Research, July 30, 2014)

Evidently, inasmuch as the perforations are attributable to shelling, a shelling operation conducted from the ground could not have brought down an aircraft traveling above 30,000 feet.

Peter Haisenko’s study is corroborated by the Russian Ministry of Defense which pointed to a Ukrainian Su-25 jet in the flight corridor of the MH17, within proximity of the plane.

Ironically, the presence of a military aircraft is also confirmed by a BBC report conducted at the crash site on July 23.

ll the eyewitnesses interviewed by the BBC confirmed the presence of a Ukrainian military aircraft flying within proximity of Malaysian Airlines MH17 at the time that it was shot down:

Eyewitness #1: There were two explosions in the air. And this is how it broke apart. And [the fragments] blew apart like this, to the sides. And when …

Eyewitness #2: … And there was another aircraft, a military one, beside it. Everybody saw it.

Eyewitness #1: Yes, yes. It was flying under it, because it could be seen. It was proceeding underneath, below the civilian one.

Eyewitness #3: There were sounds of an explosion. But they were in the sky. They came from the sky. Then this plane made a sharp turn-around like this. It changed its trajectory and headed in that direction [indicating the direction with her hands].

http://en.ria.ru/russia/20140809/191869986/Russia-Forces-US-Submarine-Out-of-Boundary-Waters.html

MOSCOW, August 9 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Northern Fleet's anti-submarine forces havedetected (http://en.ria.ru/military_news/20140807/191815550/Russias-Northern-Fleet-Tracks-Foreign-Submarine-During-Exercises.html) and forced out a US submarine from Russian boundary waters, a high-ranking source in Russia's Navy told RIA Novosti Saturday."On August 7, 2014, the patrol forces of the Northern Fleet detected a foreign submarine, supposedly a US Navy Virginia-class one, in the Barents Sea. A seaborne anti-submarine group, as well as an anti-submarine airplane Il-38, was sent to the region to search and track it down," the source said.
The Russian navy forced the submarine out of Russian waters after a 27-minute contact.
"This is far from being a single incident of finding foreign submarines in the Barents Sea lately. Similar behavior of NATO countries' submarines in the Barents Sea has caused dangerous navigational incidents many times," the source said.
In 1992, a US Baton-Rouge submarine clashed with the Northern Fleet's K-276 submarine in the Kolsky Bay. In 1986, UK's Splendid submarine clashed with the Northern Fleet's Typhoon.

The sanctions are clearly hurting Russia.

Its Putins call. Go full in on eastern Ukraine and isolate yourself more economically.
The Europeans need to talk sense to the Ukranians though.
They are allowing militias to go in and street fight after the Army has cleared the way. This is not good at all. These Ukranian militias are every bit as bad as the Russian backed militias if not worse. This puts more pressure on Putin to react. He had pulled back all those forces and now they are more than ready to move in.

There is no need to make Putin look bad. He is very concerned about he is perceived as an individual. This makes him more likely to do what will hurt Everyone involved. Greek farmers say the Russian food embargo has already dealt a devastating blow to the country's agricultural economy, leaving at least 3.5 million kilogrammes of peaches rotting in refrigerated trucks after being turned back at the Russian border.

"There are around 3.5 million kilos of peaches currently rotting in trucks, and at the height of the summer another 3.5 million kilos have yet to be harvested," the Guardian quotes Apostolos Keranis head of the Federation of Greek truckers. "We're talking about huge, huge damage."

Russia buys more than 60 percent of Greek peach exports, and almost 90 percent of strawberries, says Christos Yannakakis, the president of Greece's largest regional association of growers and cooperatives.

Approximately a tenth of European agricultural exports go to Russia, which is worth around €11 billion a year, according to European Commission data.

oops apparently Europe is surprised Putin meant business :lol

They already are hurting due to the minor sanctions.

Russia is undeniably NOT self sufficient, unless starvation sufficient.
If Russia is what you claim, go all in and invest in Russian companies.
Oh snap, they don't need the rest of the world for anything, they are self sufficient.
Just what the hell did you read to give you this idea?

I guess it depends on what one considers "hurt."

The EU, US, and other nations playing this sanction game will suffer more than Russia will.

As for a link? I prefer to let the future's history prove me right than a link war that has no meaning or resolve.

You hear about the EU hurting because they will actually display the numbers for investors and such.
They have to give some semblance of reality out.
The Russians say what they deem in the best interest of who is in power.

When Boutons starts investing in Russia, instead of US companies, then we will know its safe.

Rosneft Calls for State Aid (http://online.wsj.com/articles/rosneft-calls-for-state-aid-1408011126)

Russia's largest oil company is seeking 1.5 trillion rubles ($42 billion) in aid from the government to weather Western sanctions, the Vedomosti daily newspaper reported on Thursday. The chief executive of state-controlled Rosneft (http://quotes.wsj.com/RU/ROSN), ROSN.MZ -0.57% (http://quotes.wsj.com/RU/ROSN) Igor Sechin, has asked the Kremlin to authorize a payment from the National Wellbeing Fund—used to plug deficits in the pension system—to buy Rosneft bonds, according to the paper.
It cited a letter from Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev (http://topics.wsj.com/person/M/Dmitry-Medvedev/5396) to government officials who were asked to analyze the idea. The paper quoted an unnamed official who said that the plan was unlikely to get support.

Poland has asked the US to purchase the country's apples after Moscow banned all food imports from the EU, the US, and other countries who imposed sanctions on Russia over the Ukraine crisis.

Prior to the full embargo on food exports from the West, Russia’s agricultural watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor banned the import of practically all fruits and vegetables from Poland, citing a breach of food safety standards.

Again with the say it to his face... This is not MMA clowning.

The Ukrainians are saying it to his face right now.
And luckily for ALL parties involved Putin has backed down.
Russia knows the noose will tighten if they give E. Ukraine a full go.
Russians finding store shelves empty again for years will not be a pleasant experience.
When they can't afford Vodka and are reduced to drinking Aftershave again, it's not going to be pleasant after the hurt is applied over a long period.

You think this is some sort of sprint... it will become a Marathon that Russians have not trained for. It's all fun right now. Just give it time if they make the wrong move. Prolonged suffering is something different. Putin understands this. Will he be ready to put his people through this yet again.

War in east Ukraine to leave economy in ashes. Who will pay for recovery?

Before, the IMF money was a sure thing; now many analysts predict Ukraine could default by the end of the year.

Another looming financial burden hanging over Kiev is the $3 billion in Eurobonds issued from Russia in December 2013. Moscow can demand repayment before the bonds are due in 2015 if Ukraine’s debt-to-GDP surpasses 60 percent, which at present, seems likely.

Other Western aid includes a $1 billion loan guarantee from the US, up to $3 billion from the World Bank, €600 million from the EU, and $100 million from Japan.

Russia is nothing but an oil/gas company with an army and nukes. because of their inherent inefficiency they need $100+ oil to stay solvent and a ready market for their gas which they can sell to europe for triple what it goes for in the US because Europe has few alternatives.

Kick Putin in the nuts by starving his cash cow. Might take a few years but Presidents are supposed to think past the next news cycle and sound bite.

:lol Europe isn't the only big market for Russian NG. China and Russia are talking pipelines, and other Asian countries would love to have Russian NG, exactly the same coutries that US LNG exporters are targeting.

The dominant effect of US becoming a huge NG exporter will be for US NG domestic prices to rise 3x or 4x to match world prices, just like US domestic-oil-at-world-prices is not saving US consumers anything, while selling/depleting US natural resources to the benefit BigOil and its wealthy investors.

China absolutely took Russia to the cleaners with NG contracts. They got some overlapping deals very cheap. This basically illustrated the huge loss of leverage Russia foisted upon itself with this stupid Ukraine fiasco. Putin puts his pride before his brains and the Russian public, and many on this board, just lap it up.

A world power like Russia cannot feed itself. They have some of the most extensive farmland for the worlds #1 food crop, wheat(yes, ahead of rice), and they Frkn import the stuff? It's a joke. It's remarkable how badly their economy functions. It's hard to FK your economy up this poorly even if you attempted to ruin it on purpose. Their expertise in getting NG is so inferior to ours... and this is what their economy is based on, it's laughable.

When will this huge, proud nation with so many resources ever get things right? It's a cruel sad story what the majority of their people have had to endure. Put India in the same boat with a very different history. Huge markets make them players, but they can't make stuff. Sad.
