since we have so many recruiting news in here now i thought it'd be a good time to start a thread focusing on any local or state high school football talent one has their eye on. i myself go to all of the cibolo steele games and can keep the thread posted on not only some of the kids on that team who are being recruited but also on some of the kids that are from some of the other teams steele will see this year (o'connor, madison, judson, smithson valley, schertz clemens, wagner, both new braunfels teams and de soto from the dallas area).

for starters, i did go to the steel-johnson scrimmage and i can tell you that steele is loaded but the standouts were denley (RB), williams (QB) and jackson (defensive end).

i heard that bryson denley received an offer from texas tech this past week but i couldn't confirm. considering steele's old coach is now at tech and justin stockton is there and playing as a true freshman that may be true. i could also see baylor going after him as he would fit their scheme. he is much tougher between the tackles that i thought he would be and very shifty. he had a nice game against madison this past weekend as did LG williams, the QB, who could be a great fit for a school such as UTSA or texas state. the real stud though is mark jackson at defensive end. he had three sacks and was a big part of the reason steele pitched a shut out.

What do they feed the boys up there in Cibolo Steele? Holy shit man, what a team. That game against desoto will prove to be a season definer for the Knights.

There are only a few players in the RGV that are worth following season wide starting with RB Speights from Mc Memorial.

Good thread though. I always wondered why one of these was never created to follow high school football here in Texas.

Would anyone believe an all black Tennessee high school that won 78 games in a row, and no team crossed the 50 yard line on them for three seasons? And for the first 52 games of the streak no team scored on them?

and last i heard, speights was committed to arizona. there was also a kid last year who played for harlingen south who was a solid RB but i believed he moved out of the state. desoto will be a really tough challenge for steele. they have several top prospects and their QB, tristen wallace, is a beast. he's a dual threat and is 6'3" and 210 and has burners. he put up 518 total yards in their first game (287 passing, 231 rushing). still, he's just a 3 star at the moment because of his lack of playing time (just a junior) and his throwing mechanics are shaky. i look for him to be a 4 star by the start of his senior season. steele's DE mark jackson is already a 4 star and it would not shock me if he earned 5 stars by the start of his senior season. he's going to get a lot of sacks and tackle behind the line of scrimmage by the end of the year. dude already looks like a college player out there on the field.

I have a buddy who is one of Speight's teacher this year so I have a bit of an inside. He's committed to Arizona but it isn't set in stone. There are colleges coming down to see every one of his games. I just hope he doesn't end like another Bradley Stephens.

Speaking of Speights, he had a 99 yard run this past week. He's just a beast. I'll be going to his game this week on Friday as it's being played on our backyard.

Speaking of which Harlingen vs SA Reagan should be a good one all things considered.

rofl McAllen being overrated and getting thrashed by Permian. Their district championship last year was a fluke. They lost to a fucking Brownsville team that got into bi-district by default of being the best that shithole city has to offer.

harlingen, of course, is one of the traditional powers in the RGV region so they will always battle. reagan did lose to o'connor last weekend so this may be a down year for them but it will still be a challenge for harlingen to pull the upset. not too well versed on the favorites in RGV this year but i did see that weslaco lost to harlingen south which was also a bit of an upset.

Oddly enough Sharyland looks just as strong as last year and that's cause they've stayed in 5A (due to the opening of Sharyland Pioneer). The district will come down between them and Vela HS.

United South is suppose to have a good defense this year from what I've heard. But yeah, Steele is a juggernaut. You need more to compete with a team like that.

Harlingen will compete, they always do. Gomez has those kids believing year and year out and they somehow pull shit out of nowhere to be a regional power. It helps that they play in a weak district now. Ever since leaving 31-5A two years ago their only competition has been Harlingen South and Los Fresnos.

Weslaco was suppose to be a top three team in this region. Them losing to Har South was a shocker to many down here.

i'm still trying to get a feel for denley. he got some touches against laredo united south but the game was such a blow-out that he didn't get a lot of looks. when he did, the calls were slants or draws and he probably averaged close to 10 yards per carry. this week will be a better sample as steele will go against o'connor and they have some pretty good linebackers.

They lost a lot of kids for a while there and even dropped to 4A when Tyler eliminated district lines for them and Lee, allowing kids to attend whichever school they wanted to go to. They've bounced back nicely and have gotten even better since Ricklan Holmes took over in 2012.

yeah-it was unfortunate he was out. i'm not sure how much of a difference he would have made in that weather. that was a monsoon! mark jackson to me was the best player on the field by far. i think he wound up with three sacks but he was always in the backfield. he did have that one stupid personal foul which led to o'connor's only points but he also had that monster sack that caused a fumble. the refs blew the call on the LG william's fumble inside o'connors 5 yard line though. i was right in front of that and he was clearly down. but the rain was coming down in buckets! sloppy game on both sides but hard to throw in those conditions. the wind was brutal too. o'connor will give both brandeis and brennan all they can handle. that is a tough district. steele better cut out all those penalties or de soto will have their way with them on thursday!

by the way, jackson has offers from baylor, oklahoma and texas tech with interest being drawn from texas and a&m. nothing beats a defensive end who can get to the QB. aggies are already getting huge rewards from myles garrett. he's just 2 and 1/2 sacks away from tying clowney's total for his frosh season.

as for denley, scout.com still has him as the 9th rated RB in the state but i just haven't seen it this year. part of that is the very limited play calling steele has shown to date and the lack of PT he had in the first 2 games due to blowout wins and the other due to perhaps the rainy conditions of the o'connor game. credit to the panther's defense as their LBs are very capable of filling the gaps.

tough game tonight for steele. they have to go on the road to play de soto in waco. forecast calling for rain during the game as well. while steele has a stellar defense, not sure they can hold the eagles offense down enough. cibolo scheduled this game against a division I team as a test for down the road where they would potentially have to play a team such as katy (and i would even add brennan and brandeis to that).

i missed it. the steele game was a great one. de soto looked at first as if they were going to dominate after going up 29-12 by midway through the 2nd quarter but steele shut them out the rest of the game and got it to 29-24 with under 2 minutes. they drove it from their own 1 yard line all the way to the de soto 15 before failing to convert a 4th and 2 with :15 left on the clock. steele really should have won. they gave up a TD on a holding call, had a long INT return called back on an illegal block and committed over 100 yards in penalties. they also seemed to be in awe to start the game but once they settled in they were the better team. bryson denley had his best game of the season with over 100 yards rushing. he is damn strong for his size and can break it from time to time (he had a 35 yard TD run). steele has a WR named harris who is something special too. mark jackson was not bad and had some impact on the game but did not record a sack. de soto is loaded and had at least 4 players that will be receiving big time offers. they definitely are worthy of that #7 USA today national ranking. this bodes well for steele too since they played up to a division I school that has twice as many students as steele. based on what i saw, it should come down to steele and brennan (possibly brandeis) at the end of the year for division II in the city and steele can definitely compete with the best of the houston and/or dallas region.

It's unreal how aggressive some of these high school teams are on defense. They are awarded that luxury out of the sheer number of athletes they out on the field. yeah, i agree. teams like de soto and allen just have huge student populations from which to draw so many athletes and de soto has some beasts. steele has so many juniors and even quite a few sophomores so i think they just got overwhelmed. but they shut de soto out from midway through the 2nd quarter on. in fact, i think de soto only had about 4 first downs the rest of the way. once they realized they could play with them steele actually dominated the game. they just made way too many mistakes (the missed extra points and penalties that erased big plays).

They're rounding out to be the most consistent 6A team the RGV has to offer by default but that's not saying much. This is a really weak year for 6A teams down here. Mc Memorial is good but not great. Speights is a monster that would be doing great if he were playing in a tougher region imo. The team that was overhyped was Mc High, but they got trounced by Odessa Permian and have since looked shaky.

The other powers in the RGV are normally Harlingen, Weslaco, Weslaco East, Ed North...these are having a down year so to speak after high expectations coming into the season. The strongest teams down here are all sub 6A. Ed Vela looks to be the strongest imo. They have a bunch of seniors playing on both sides of the ball and they are very well coached but again they are 5A... which is straight up bullshit considering they have the highest student athlete population in all RGV schools not named Harlingen or Sharyland. Port Isabel is the other team that has a usual long run in the playoffs. Every other team is pretty damn inconsistent and that doesn't bode well.

port isabel seems to the one team in the region that has a shot to go deep from time to time. but every once in a while, an RGV team has a pretty solid unit that will at least get the area thinking that this could be the year they give the SA team a solid shot.

Won't be this year. Teams in the RGV have been vastly inconsistent. Sharyland pulled one out of their ass vs Vela, regardless both teams will go at least three deep along with PI imo. All other teams in 6A and 5A are just filler. It sucks but it is what it is.

Surprisingly 6A teams in the coastal bend area are good to great this year. They will field more of a competition vs a SA team.

Dauphine committed to Tech; Martin to Baylor

PA Memorial had a 42-26 lead, but lost 70-49 to Channelview.

Crazy

damn another come from ahead to lose game to put them at 1-3 on the year

.......On the first play after the kickoff, Corey Dauphine, who led Titan ball carriers with 195 yards on 20 carries, scampered around the left side of the LaPorte defense for a 56 yard touchdown run. Dauphine also added the two-point conversion on a run and the Titans grabbed a 35-28 lead.......

Baylor commit Kam Martin also added 180 yards rushing.

Their defense must completely suck.

Can't wait to see Dauphine in Tech gear...

got back in time from an out of town training to catch some high school ball and caught the steele/judson game. even though steel won the game it was from the passing game as i was unimpressed with bryson denley who has yet to have a stellar game this season. lg williams won the game with some late heroics and i think he would make a nice player for texas state. mark jackson was decent but has been struggling since he started commanding double teams.

OL Terrance Steele from Steele committed to Tech almost as soon as they offered.

Mike Jinks connection still there apparently.

Jinks moving up the ladder quickly:

Coach Kingsbury also announced the promotion of Mike Jinks to associate head coach.* Jinks will continue to coach the Red Raider running backs.“Coach Jinks has done a phenomenal job developing our running backs, including our first 1,000 yard rusher since 1998,” Kingsbury said.* “He is a tremendous asset to our program on and off the field, and his experience as a head coach has been invaluable to me during our two years here together.
