I thought they only did that before rugby games. Didn't know that ritual was used in other sports too.

This is called the 'Haka'. A native Maori ritual done before starting a battle.

Does haka translate to gay?

Haka's are pretty dope tbh. Not sure it's a great idea when you know you're gonna lose by 30 but I admire the ritual.

Coaches like Don Nelson and _'Antoni would be ideal coaches for team USA, just call up the best shooters and play run and gun. Monkeyball doesn't work in FIBA games because those European bigs are too big and strong in the paint, and to make things worse, there's no defensive 3-sec rule in FIBA games.

It's a Maori thing. Every Maori TV channel in New Zealand is 24 hours of that fucking haka dance.

Those of us who watch rugby know all about them. But it's already amused me that New Zealand is so into it. They seem out of place with the other Oceanic nations.

Lol at the Americans acting like it was a recital and not a challenge. I guess it was good for the Kiwis that the USA didn't know what it was.

"In the past three weeks New Zealand teams have very uncharacteristically lost a lot of rugby! In case you need a reminder, the men’s 7s team failed to win gold at the Commonwealth games, the Crusaders failed to win the Super Rugby title, and most recently the Black Ferns failed to make the semi-final of the Women’s Rugby World Cup."

Eh, hater probably means 15s, which, as we all know, is the only real rugby.

While its much better before Rugby games, I really love it.

Also attented it once in '07 when Astralia (with a very young Patty) played New Zealand in Brisbane.

Probably. But wasn`t their winning streak on the Commonwealths even longer...

"New Zealand, who were on a winning streak of 30 Commonwealth matches that stretched back to a Jonah Lomu-inspired side that won gold in the inaugural tournament in Kuala Lumpur in 1998, scored two tries through Sherwin Stowers and Joe Webber, Gillies Kaka nailing one conversion."

Not a rugby fan but I remember the All-Blacks with Jonah Lomu. He was a great player.

I remember an NRL final with FoiFoi MoiMoi going full on. That was great.

Haka makes totally sense for rugby but dumb for other sports like basketball

I had the opportunity to play against a selection of young players from New Zealand in France, I was at 10 meters from them... I can tell it's impressive... you don't laugh when you see 15 athlete freaks yelling their stuff at you.

We lost the game before it even started during this Haka...

Was thinking the same while watching the video. Rugby is an extremely physical sport, it makes sense to try to intimidate your opponent, get in their head and have that mental edge over them.

Basketball is extremely soft when compared to rugby, especially nowadays. Trying to get physical or intimidate your opponent will only result in technicals and trips to the line.

:lol at this one:

maori culture before the treaty was cannibalism, slavery, infanticide, murder etc. That is nothing to be proud of. The haka makes NZ, not just maoris, a laughing stock.
