View Full Version : Which single team are Spurs fans most proud of beating?

I have to say, while I'm not a Spurs fan, that the top 3 teams that impress me the most are

1) Detrot Pistons 05: The best defensive team in NBA history, with solid coaching by Larry Brown. Their offense was nothing special but their defense was suffocating. Spurs managed to win, barely, but they did put away the defending champs.

2) Miami Heat: This was very impressive, Lebron started believing in his own hype that he was already surpassing Kobe and on his way to being the next Jordan when the Spurs reminded the choKING that he's LeFraud.

3) Lakers 2003: The only true defeat the Spurs ever enjoyed was finishing off the Lakers with Phil Jackson in 03. Granted the Lakers were exhausted and most key role players were injured from the 3 year championship run and Horry purposely played like shit to get traded. But it was impressive none the less granted it was the only key legit win against the Kobe-Shaq team. 1999 was just a joke, Rambis is a joke.

#1- 03 Lakers
#2- 05 Pistons
#3- 14 Heat

I might switch 2 and 3....they're pretty close tbh. #1 is still my all time fav series win. Basically I agree with your three teams....just different order.

I was proudest of beating the 05 Pistons.

I did a poll that basically answered this question in July. It got a pretty good response from Spurs Talk.

Honestly, I'm probably more proud of beating the Thunder last year than the Heat. OKC was, and still is, our boogey team with their athleticism. With the way Wade has declined I don't think the Heat were all that special in the last two seasons, they'd have been easily beaten in '13 by the Pistons, Lakers or early 2000s Spurs.

1999 & 2003 Lakers and it ain't even close man. The Lakers are our only rival who've had our number since the inception. Don't the Spurs have a winning record against every other team in the NBA?

Making Kobe and co cry on national television was a sight to behold tbh :toast

especially since the Spurs waxed that ass and Duncan went HAM. Basically we're asking if we're more proud of beating the defending champs, the back to back defending champs, or the three time defending champs. I'll take the three timers

Last year's OKC. Then the lakers in 2003. None of the teams we beat in the finals were a real "rivalry" what I mean by that is, we go head to head with WC team's way more than the east to hate any of them. I guess you can say last year's heat, but even at that I never really hated them as much as i hate kobe/shaq lakers or durant/westbrook/fisher thunder.

'03 Lakers because they had beaten us like dogs in '01 and '02 and they were 3-time defending champs. Seeing the dysfunction unfold before our eyes as the Spurs romped them in Staples while tears rolled down Fisher's cheeks is vintage footage (added bonus of Bill Walton doing color for that game and ridiculing the Lakers on live TV)

The '05 Pistons were arguably the best opponent we ever beat....that game 5 is arguably the best win in franchise history.

And for pure shits and giggles and because it was just so much fun to see, beating D'Antoni's Suns was pretty cool too.....his disgruntled face on the sidelines constantly whining about calls and his total dejection in the post games was classic. Manu Ginobili should declare D'Antoni as property when doing his taxes.....

'03 Lakers, '05 Pistons, '14 Heat were the three best teams we've beaten.

'07 Suns and '14 OKC are a close second tier (arguably as talented, but without the championship pedigree).

I'd love to see someone do a simulated playoff between the 8 best teams the Spurs beat in the playoffs and see who comes out on top. Could probably do it using "WhatifSports." Teams could be seeded something like this:

1. '05 Pistons
2. '14 Heat
3. '03 Lakers
4. '14 Thunder
5. '07 Suns
6. '07 Cavs
7. '03 Nets
8. '05 Suns

I had a few free minutes so I went ahead and ran the simulation. This is in no way my opinion of what the results should be, just what WhatifSports thinks would happen based on the above seeding, with teams rotating homecourt as they would in an actual playoff series. Definitely some surprises/things I don't necessarily agree with, but might spark some interesting conversation.

Rd 1
(1) '05 Pistons vs (8) '05 Suns - Pistons win 4-3
(2) '14 Heat vs (7) '03 Nets - Heat win 4-0
(3) '03 Lakers vs (6) '07 Cavs - Cavs win 4-1 in one of the biggest surprises of the tournament
(4) '14 Thunder vs (5) '07 Suns - Suns win 4-2 in several close games

Rd 2
(1) '05 Pistons vs (5) '07 Suns - Suns win 4-1 in another huge surprise which I have trouble seeing actually happening
(2) '14 Heat vs (7) '07 Cavs - Heat win 4-2 in Lebron vs Lebron

Finals
(2) '14 Heat vs (5) '07 Suns - Heat win 4-1 with a blowout to close the series

Again, not sure I agree with the results, but found it an entertaining exercise worthy of discussion.

The 2008 Hornets in the West Semis and it's not even close.

Chris Paul used to be an arrogant little punk. He used to take more cheap shots and flop more than anyone else in the NBA. Manu and TP hated his guts, and when we went down 3-2 to them in 2008, the whole team was livid. Winning game 6 at home, and then game 7 on the road, where we had been blown out by them in the 3 previous games in the series was extremely vindicating. I hated those bastards, and was so proud the Spurs grinded that series out after everyone had left them for dead. Everyone wanted to anoint Chris Paul as TP's successor as the best PG in the NBA (they did anyways) and everyone wanted the old and boring Spurs dynasty to end vs a young and upcoming team like the Hornets. But the Spurs refused to let it happen. Most pride as a team and as a fan I've ever felt.

The Spurs have not really been tested in the 12 year Duncan/Parker/Ginobili era. There isn't really a team that we thought we couldn't beat. If nothing else, then the Lakers in 2003, only because they were going for a four-peat and we made Kobe and Fisher cry.

There have been a few teams we "couldnt" beat. Like you said, 03' Lakers are on that list. But nobody thought we could beat 14' Thunder after what happened in 12'. I would also contest that the Boston 08' team wouldve been near unbeatable with that Spurs team we had and same with the 09' and 10' Lakers.

Of the current teams in the league OKC is our toughest matchup. There's a good chance we'd have won anyway, but lets not pretend that the Thunder missing Ibaka for two games didn't make a difference. Seven game series with both teams healthy is still a bad matchup for the Spurs.

The boogeyman still has you but not the Spurs. They beat down the Thunder by an average of 27 pts at home and finished them off on the road without their floor leader playing in the second half. The discrepancy between the two teams was huge and should remain that way going forward. Have you already forgotten how much better our bench was and still is compared to theirs? Whatever mental advantage the Thunder had on the Spurs has been exorcised.

BTW, getting Ibaka back saved them from getting swept.

Done deal.
