What's funny is that this supposed "great pocket passer" Derek Anderson has worse career passing numbers across the board than the Atlanta version of Michael Vick despite having better receivers to throw to than Vick did in Atlanta. I don't think anyone is under the illusion that DA is a great QB or the QB of the future for Carolina, but he has the ability to at least be a short-term solution down there. If nothing else he'll get the ball out and downfield- hopefully to guys in the same-color jerseys. The division is still there to be had.

Anderson almost led Carolina back on Sunday, twice cutting the gap to eight in the final five minutes with touchdown passes. The defense simply couldn't stop Atlanta, in particularly wide receiver Julio Jones.

Jones' 75-yard touchdown with 3:45 remaining gave the three-time Pro Bowler 300 yards receiving and Atlanta a 41-26 cushion.

Anderson finished 17-of-23 passing for 172 yards and two touchdowns.

"He did some pretty good things with the exception of the one he was throwing away," Carolina coach Ron Rivera said of Anderson and the interception. "He made some good decisions, some really good reads.

"He handled himself well under the circumstances and got us down there in position to score again."

So Rivera is confident Anderson can replace Newton.

I played cornerback for 4 seasons of HS football. When we faced a white guy who couldn't run that made my job so much easier, all I had to do was lock on a receiver, I had no fear of having to worry about the QB running. When we faced Hanford, Tulare Union with all those blacks guys and a black QB who could scoot it was a whole other situation. Now I had to not only cover but worry about a running QB.

Russell Wilson is the hardest QB in the NFL defend, Cam Newton is also hard to defend. Both can hurt a defense with their legs, they put a whole other kind of stress on a defense that a Derek Anderson who can't run a lick without fumbling doesn't.
