So is there any downside to buying the OEM vs retail version of Windows 8.1 other than the license being married to my motherboard? Don't tell me 7 is better because I'm getting it only to play games with; all other computer work I like doing better in Linux.

I own both. Use both daily. 8 is on my fragbox and 7 is on my desktop. There is no contest. 8 is much better than 7. Better resource management, a much improved control panel, and faster performance in boot times as well as gaming.

People like 7 because they're scared of metro, which is easily disabled.

There is literally nothing Win7 does that's better than 8. Not that 7 is bad, but 8 is a more refined version of 7.

Not an enthusiast, I see.

Furthermore, lack of a feature is not a feature. Why wouldn't you want a faster OS if you could have it?

You also didn't address the vastly superior task manager.

Why would I not care about memory management and give a shit about the Windows 8 UI when I already said I'm using it strictly for gaming? I'd be basically using Windows 8.1 like a console, and booting back to Linux whenever I wanted to do anything other than shoot niggas up and shit.

This is a good explanation. Probably not but in certain situations it might.

The only issue is looking forward. An i5 might indeed be a bottleneck as games become more demanding. But for the most part it's still the most cost-effective CPU by a pretty good margin.

Don't see the point of the change away from the traditional desktop/folder format. I fucking hated when Ubuntu went to Unity, so I changed it back to Gnome2 (Gnome3 is even worse than Unity). I don't understand trying to make a desktop run like a tablet when you have a big screen and a mouse. Operating systems should just ideally GTFO of the way imo tbh.

It's about consistency. If people can't handle a basic start menu change, they're hopeless with trying to master two disparate operating systems if one runs on a tablet and the other on a computer and they look entirely different.

There was a legit problem using it merely with a touch device. But they went all touch, and that was not a solution. This is a proper way to handle it, you can switch between touch and desktop modes, while keeping some of the good ideas they had on 8.
