I worked at an electronics/appliance repair shop around this time. Most of these VCR's were cheaply built pieces of shit. We were constantly having to clean the heads on them and the gears were always fucking up on the tape loaders. The older top loaders were a lot more reliable but damn, they weighed like fifty pounds.

We still are.

Look at what we pay for cell phones now.

But are they water proof (not water resistant)?

Yet they could be, and should be!

People weren't really storing media collections on their PC in 1996, but yeah, 1 GB wasn't much.

Spoiled-ass kids. Do you understand how good you have it these days. PC's were even slower and more expensive in late 80's- early 90's.

I can't believe the ridiculous markup you used to have in boxed desktop computers. I remember when I built my first one it was about $800 and outperformed $1500 retail boxes.

A friend of mine had a Silicon Graphics Indigo workstation. I believe he had $50k in total hardware.

Your low-end PC's of today could outperform that machine.

I remember buying an IBM-XT with a dot matrix printer for about $7000. Had a screaming 128KB of Ram and a 10 MB hard drive. That was hot shit at the time. Wordstar was the hot word processing software pre-windows word.

Later on I had a cell phone mounted in my truck that honked the horn when it rang and a motorola brick I paid $1250 for.
