View Full Version : Spurs' Boris Diaw will get $500,000 in bonuses if he stays in shape

San Antonio Spurs forward Boris Diaw has completely rehabilitated his reputation since leaving the Charlotte Bobcats. He's been a vital part of the Spurs' system on both ends, and his tremendous basketball IQ has been on display on the biggest stage in basketball. San Antonio, though, hasn't forgotten about Diaw plodding around in Charlotte, was way above his ideal playing weight. There's a clause in his contract to prove that, via ESPN's Amin Elhassan:

Diaw's deal features $500,000 in annual performance bonuses in the form of a weight clause. Each season, he gets:

• $150,000 for weighing less than or equal to 254 pounds on Oct. 25
• $150,000 for weighing less than or equal to 254 pounds on the first Tuesday after the All-Star Game
• $200,000 for weighing less than or equal to 254 pounds on April 1

Now that's a smart way to structure a deal. It's not as if Diaw doesn't have enough motivation to be the best he can be for the Spurs, but it can't hurt to make sure of it. The dates that San Antonio has chosen make a lot of sense, as there's extra incentive for him to be disciplined over the offseason, keep consistent throughout the year and, most important, be ready for the playoffs.

So he has 15 days to lose 50 lbs for that first bonus.

I wonder how these contingency contracts work. Does a deal like this have any bearing on the salary cap? It seems like the answer would be a no, but why?

Motivation can move mountains, he could use that money to buy plenty of food for the next offseason.

Yes, it does. This would fall under the category of likely to be met bonus criteria, and would count against the tax and cap. If they had put in an MVP bonus for Boris, that would not count, because it would be a not likely to be met bonus criteria.

I think the Oct.25 deadline might fall under the unlikely to meet category :lol

I'm concerned he might try to game the system, though. For instance, he could take weight loss pills on the days leading up to the target date, and then begin eating like mad again after, before taking weight loss pills again in time for the next deadline.

The goal of these clauses is to make sure Diaw stays in shape all-year round. But if he games the system, things could end up being worse for him, as he goes through dramatic shifts from being very heavy to being very light.

How much do you think he actually weighs? He's like 6'8.5" and not overly musculed, which would limit his weight. My guess for his Charlotte exit weight might be 280-285, and he's in SUCH better shape than that now. I don't think he's been much over maybe 260-265 since he's been here. He's never going to be cut or ripped.

Diaw is legend tbh. Doesn't matter if he weighs 260 right now, he'll make weight.. and then bang your gf before picking up that fat bonus and winning a championship ring tbh.

I wonder if this would work with other players contracts. Could Austin Daye get a bonus if he stays over a certain weight? Maybe not, he may just get fat. I wonder if Blair had a similar deal in his contract?

Depends. The way they determine likely/unlikely is whether the player met that criteria the year before. I dunno what Diaw weighed in at last year.

For those who don't know, if Diaw fails to meet likely-to-be-earned incentives, the team gets a credit to their cap next season. Same goes for Mills' numbers. It might now actually be a bad thing for them not to reach their goals, as I believe the Spurs could clear almost a million in extra space between the two of them, but I'd rather they played well en route to another title.

Nigga needs to stay in shape regardless of any bonuses... but it can't hurt anything, right?

His weight doesn't really bother me, he is good when he is fat as well.

It's more his mindset and aggressiveness that make the difference.

Boris plays great even when he is fat, but at the same time I guess since he signed a long term contact they want to keep him healthy (knees, cardio etc), winning a ring is the best thing ever but maybe they fear he can implode from 2.0 (almighty superhuman PG) to a floppy disk lazy fuck.

Found this vid. It's pretty much every bit of ABC coverage about Diaw during the Finals. Could have been a much shorter vid with tighter editing, but what can you do? Still fun to watch:

How often does D-Rob and TD go to games? Are they there just occasionally, or do they go regularly?

D-Rob is often in the building.

Manu also brings his sons to home games throughout the season. The kiddos are bonafide Spurs fans.

D-rob is there all the time. His usual seats are on the other side of the spurs bench 1 row back from courtside

Boris could probably average 15-5-5 in today’s no defense league. Even the fat, older version.

Thanks. I assume Tim doesn't go regularly?

Was Manu still going as a fan when he was in town (and when he wasn't officially working with the team), or did you not see him much back then? I seem to recall seeing him there on the league pass video feed a few times when he wasn't officially working for the team.
