On one hand, it sucks to see Nash's career take this downswing the past few years.

On the other hand, just imagine Kobe having to share major on-court minutes with Lin and Young.

In 2013, the aging Spurs were an aging dynasty that was being consigned into oblivion. The Miami Heat, with their brand new Big 3, were the class of the NBA. While the Lakers, with their Big 4, were supposed to be the Western super team that was their archenemy. Those two superpowers were supposed to clash with each other in many NBA Finals for years to come, while the Spurs were to be relegated into irrelevance. It was time for the old guard to make way for the new game in town.

But contrary to everybody's expectations, something entirely different happened. The Lakers stumbled out of the gate and went through an injury plagued season, culminating in Kobe's torn achilles. The Spurs promptly proceeded to sweep them out of the playoffs in the most lopsided series (by point differential) in NBA playoff history, with Dwight Howard symbolically getting ejected on the last game of his Laker career. He then promptly bails out of Los Angeles on his way to Houston. A year later, Kobe suffers another season-ending injury, Nash still can't play, and Pau leaves in the offseason for Chicago, despite being offered more money to stay in Los Angeles.

The Heat, on the other hand, also fell victim to the Spurs in the most lopsided (by point differential) NBA Finals in history. The destruction was so palpable, it sent LeBron scurrying back home to Cleveland and completely ended the championship-era in Miami.

The old guard was supposed to make way for the new. The Spurs were supposed to quietly cede their throne to LA and Miami as they faded into irrelevance. Instead, they proved all the doubters wrong, and annihilated the Lakers and Heat superteams on their way to redemption and reclaiming the NBA championship that rightfully belongs to them.

What a beautiful story. Such poetic justice. :cry

He knows he can't compete at the highest level with these young guys anymore.

He knows he can milk his injury(s) and still collect that fat paycheck every week.

He's going to get paid millions of dollars to sit court side and watch his friends hoop while traveling the U.S. on the company's dollar.

Just sit back, relax, get paid, and enjoy his farewell tour.

Lets do a little breakdown:

-Rams the Lakers up the ass with Phoenix, eliminates LA from two consecutive post-seasons.
-Costs LA two 1st-rounders in trade for him.
-Breaks leg during second game as a Laker, never healthy again, career as effective player essentially ends 5 quarters into LAL career.
-Lakers hire Mike D'Antoni instead of Phil Jackson due in large part to Nash's presence.
-Refuses to take advantage of medical retirement despite futility of comeback, costing Lakers $9.3m in cap room.
-Nerve damages ends 2014-15 season before it begins, with Lakers down a roster spot and already thin at PG position.

It was a fluke injury. The chances of the same thing happening in Phoenix are slim to none. We always kept him in decent health. If we hadn't run him out of town, the end of his career would have been much better - but at least we can take solace in the fantasy that he is a double agent, taking down the enemy from within....

Serious question, isn't this a good thing for the Lakers? Nash has been done for a while now so it's not like he was going to help anyway. And now the Lakers can apply for a disabled player exception to add another player to the roster for about $5 million. Not that there is any savior left out there in free agency, but what the hell was Nash going to do for the Lakers?

"It's just a reality," Nash said, in a Grantland.com video documentary. "I'm not going to retire because I want the money. It's honest. We want honest athletes, but at the same time, you're going to have people out there saying 'He's so greedy. He's made x amount of money and he has to take this last little bit.' Yes, I do, have to take that last little bit. I'm sorry if that is frustrating to some but if they were in my shoes they would do exactly the same thing. I wouldn't believe for a minute that they wouldn't."

Really, really bad call not to use the stretch provision on him...

Not really. Lack of cap space wasn't the reason that they didn't get any of their FA targets. Using the stretch provision on Nash would have created 6M in cap space they didn't need last summer and cost them 3M in cap space in each of the next two summers. They made the right call by eating the entire cap hit last summer.

Not really. Lack of cap space wasn't the reason that they didn't get any of their FA targets. Using the stretch provision on Nash would have created 6M in cap space they didn't need last summer and cost them 3M in cap space in each of the next two summers. They made the right call by eating the entire cap hit last summer.

But now, even with a disabled player exception, they can't make as much room. There's trades to be made mid-season, or players to pick up off waivers.

On the other hand, I'm not sure how that would've affected Nash's cap hold for next season (which is sizeable at almost $15 million).

The DPE will be half his salary, IIRC. That's almost as much as they would have gotten with the stretch provision, with no impact on future years.

I don't think the cap hold for next year was ever an issue as Nash was never going to be in their plans beyond this season.

At least when Scott gets sacked they wouldn't be looking for a coach, just give Nash the job and he'd do just as good as Kidd imho.
