Robert E.Howard (Texan) came up with his wandering warrior in the 30's. He like ERB and Barsoom came up with a whole world for Conan....Hyboria, with places like Kush, Aquillonia, Cimmeria. Obviously the women were volupuous and wicked, the villians....diabolical, with names like Thulsa Doom and Thoth Amon.

Conan was a bad ass dude but not cartoonish. When he's in with a bull ape he has his hands full, he finally choked the monster out, but it was a struggle. Conan had his God....Crom, but had little faith in Him. He loathed magic.

The 12 Conan books that Howard wrote (tons and tons of rip offs) are as good as sword & sorcery gets, the pinnacle, the ultimate. He totally nails it, actually it was Robert E. Howard who ges the credit for originating...Sword & Sorcery, it was with a similar character to Conan...King Kull...late 20's.

If you think....'I'm above that silly shit"...trust me, your loss. I highly recommend the Howard Conan saga/epic. That's if you're in to high adventure, exotic places, flashing swords, monstrous monsters, wicked wizards, wicker women, manic magicians and a .......hero.

While the Arnold's Conan was closer to the books, this one more lavish and better done.

Hey Avante have you ever seen a movie called The Whole Wide World? It's one of my favorites. It is based on a memoir by author Novalyne Price about her friendship/romance with Robert E. Howard when they were struggling writers in south Texas. Howard was a pretty odd guy with a really strange relationship with his mom. It stars 2 of my favorite actors---Renee Zellweger as Novalyne and Vincent D'Onofrio as Robert (can't do better than him to depict a dark, tortured soul). I don't know if it's on Netflix but you can probably find it online somewhere. It's just an informative, enjoyable film. :toast
