Microsoft is only in the game because they looked at Apple's revenue and Google's ubiquity and figured they needed to do the same without ever comprehending even in the slightest of terms why either party was doing it. And here's the crux: none of those reasons apply to them! People are buying Windows PCs anyway. They aren't doing it for ad revenue. There's no compelling reason for them to do what they're doing at all. That, not coincidentally, is why they don't target user satisfaction in their platform because they don't know what it is they gain by you using it.

The part where you're right is that Microsoft should be doing exactly what you say: creating a vertical network of devices and services then focusing on how they can make it work great for the user. They have the tools to do it and a compelling reason which is to be a loved focal point for all of their customers' interactions with computers and data. The only problem is that their culture precludes it. They don't want to lay the difficult groundwork for a true media store. They don't want to do the work that's required to have a developer platform that's stable and growing using good languages and tools for developers to make it a rich destination. They don't want to capitulate with OEMs and carriers to get their devices in stores and in front of customers (this is due to the fact OEMs have killed PC profitability in a race to the bottom). The principle point is that Microsoft prefers licensing and being hands-off on the hard stuff because that's how they got to where they are. If they can change, then you might be right but there's no evidence they even recognize there's a problem so it's doubtful they will. Also, if you're doubting I'm right, remember that they had a prolonged and public search for a CEO to do just that and every single one told them no despite them bringing in billions in continuing revenue and positively dominating in OS marketshare. I should mention that I personally hope they can do this. A customer-focused Microsoft would be a great thing to have but no one could make an argument that it is what we have now.

1) If you buy a case and you've got an iPhone you're a sucker. Applecare+ all the way. You get a full 2 years of warranty, so it's the same length as your phone contract. If you break your screen or get water damage, it's 79 bucks to get a replacement. If you're unethical you could spin a lot of accidental damage as hardware failure tbh. Or you can just get a replacement phone for free if your battery doesn't hold over 50% of it's original charge.

Other bonus is that everything in the box is under warranty so if the strain relief on your cord breaks you can just go get a new one for free.

It might be more expensive than a case, but at least you're not ruining the design of the phone.
