View Full Version : Larry Fitzgerald: We're the San Antonio Spurs (of the NFL).
Interesting snippet from the NFL world.
The Arizona Cardinals sit atop the difficult NFC West and lead the NFL with a 6-1 record. Larry Fitzgerald believes the best is still ahead for the team from the desert, and the wide receiver had an interesting comparison for the Cards' penchant for winning close, scrappy games.
"We're a blue collar, grind-it-out team right now," Fitzgerald told The Arizona Republic. "We're the San Antonio Spurs. We're not flashy. We'll take all those ugly, nasty, sloppy wins. But we're not even close to fulfilling our potential on offense. And it would be nice to put it all together."
We'll attribute the stretch comparison to the multiple-champion Spurs to Fitzgerald catching NBA tip-off fever.

Larry when you win on a constant ie: win 5 titles and 6 conference titles in 15 years
then you can talk

If they were winning their games by two touchdowns then they'd be the San Antonio Spurs of the NFL tbh.

It's a horrible analogy, granted, but the fact is that people only start making these comparisons when your status as elite has become undeniable; like, "I'm the Michael Jordan of used car salesmen", or whatever. I'm cool with people saying, "we're the spurs of (insert profession) as a means of touting their own perceived greatness; ultimate compliment.

We're not flashy. We'll take all those ugly, nasty, sloppy wins.
The Spurs will take wins however they can get them but they haven't been what he described since 2007. Now, when they are at their best, they are a smooth, fluid team that kills their opponents with precision and execution.
He was complimenting the Spurs -no doubt- but I thought what he described was best suited for the previous Spurs mantra of "Four-down", play killer defense and limit your mistakes teams.

The Spurs are not a blue-collar, grind-it-out team. That's the Grizzlies. :lmao If anything, the Spurs' highly complex and intricate, motion-based, read-and-react offense is the most white-collar system in basketball.

SpursTalk is a funny and fickle beast.
As others have said...you don't get this kind of praise unless you are the standard-bearer; unless you are setting the bar for excellence. As if every other NBA team looking up to the Spurs wasn't enough, we now have teams from the NFL and MLB wanting in on that mentality.
I know that it's not the perfect analogy. The Spurs don't grit and grind like they did from 1999-2007. But just because they had one Finals series that was some of the most beautiful basketball anyone has ever seen...that doesn't take away what made them great. A year ago, everyone would still agree that 98% of people found the Spurs "boring"...are we supposed to believe that has really changed THAT much?
But go ahead and find something else to bitch about, everybody.

They turned it over 20 times in game 1 of 82 and nearly blew a 10 point lead with seven and change remaining. They played a very underwhelming first half but, managed to win. It was pretty ugly at times, and very sloppy. The Spurs litter the regular season with many of these types of games so don't act like they don't exist.
Do you have any takes that aren't shit?
How's Ayres working out for you so far crud muffin? I here he's doing some things.... Future looks bright for both of you. I won't get anymore sophisticated than that because I know I'll lose you chicken little.

No one is bitching about getting praised for winning. Hell, there used to be comments about an "*" when it came to the Spurs 1st Championship. What is tired is that some people still think of them as winning with a grind-it-out, boring style. That's just wrong. It hasn't been just 1 Finals series where they played beautiful basketball. Its been 2 Finals in a row and 1 WCF. They had to re-create themselves and their system after the 1st round exit in the 2010-2011 season. It's going on 4 years now, catch up already. This is all about Fitzgerald using a dated analogy. Most talking heads absolutely gush at the Spurs' current style of basketball.

Tbh all the internet NBA boards I visit have the vast majority in the camp of Spurs being a fun team to watch. I think it's truly only casual and fly-by fans that still think they're not entertaining.
Most of the contratrians though throw that word around as a deliberate pejorative. Fvck em.

Went to a Arizona Cardinals board for shits and giggles and most of their fans buy into what he said as them being "boring" but getting the job done. He didn't mean it but he unintentionally gave us a back-handed compliment and reinforced a false stereotype about us out of sheer ignorance. He meant well but at the end of the day, who gives a fuck what a ringless past his prime WR thinks about our Spurs?

However, if the improbable happens, that the Raiders relocate to San Antonio, then with their team colors, and potentially having Peter Holt and former Spurs owner Red McCombs investing in them, as well as possible marketing help from the Spurs organization, the Raiders would, in time, become the Spurs of the NFL.
