Portland Trail Blazers guard C.J. McCollum (3) is picked from the floor as The Portland Trail Blazers face the Dallas Mavericks at the Moda Center.

What looked like a battle of two top Western Conference teams for two quarters turned into a rout as the Trail Blazers used a second half surge to put away Dallas Mavericks 108-87 Thursday night at the Moda Center.

Dallas led 50-46 at halftime but Portland outscored the Mavericks 35-18 in the third quarter to take control of the game. The Blazers opened the third quarter on a 19-5 run to immediately erase the halftime deficit and would never relinquish the lead.

Chandler Parsons came alive with nine points in the third quarter trimming the Blazers advantage to five, but Portland knocked down timely baskets to keep the Mavericks at bay.

First, Steve Blake hit a jumper from left baseline, then Nicolas Batum hit a three from the wing and Chris Kaman added an elbow jumper to stretch the lead to twelve at 78-66 with a minute left in the third. The Mavericks would never get closer.

Portland opened the fourth with a three by CJ McCollum, a fast break lay up by Thomas Robinson and a put-back bucket from Kaman to push the lead to 18.

Damian Lillard delivered the final blow.

His three pointer with 7:24 left gave the Blazers a 95-74 lead and prompted Dallas coach Rick Carlise to pull his starters and let the end of his bench close out the game.

LaMarcus Aldridge led the Blazers with 20 points, Lillard had 18 points, five rebounds and six assists while Batum flirted with a triple double, scoring 8 points, grabbing nine boards and dishing out nine assists.

McCollum had his best performance of the season notching 13 points and looking confident on offense for the first time all season. Wesley Matthews and Kaman had 12 points a piece.

The Mavericks struggled shooting the ball all night laboring through a 37 percent shooting performance that was a combination of good Portland defense and plain missing shots. The Mavericks, who came into the game boasting the best offense in the NBA, hit just 5-of-23 three pointers.

Dirk Nowitzki was the lone bright spot for the Mavericks finishing with 17 points, but like the rest of his teammates struggled with his shot, finishing 6-for-17 from the floor. Parsons had 11 points, nine of which came during the three minute stretch of the third quarter when it briefly looked like Dallas would mount a comeback. Monta Ellis was the only other Maverick to reach double figures, finishing with 14 points.

Bench work
Terry Stotts elected to go with a five-man bench unit to open the second quarter for the first time this season. Blake, McCollum, Barton, Thomas Robinson and Kaman played well as a unit outscoring the Mavericks by six in 4:41 of playing time. The Mavericks led 24-20 at the end of the first quarter and when Matthews checked in with 8:19 left in the first half, the bench unit had put the Blazers in front 33-31.

Kaman led the way with 8 points in the quarter, while McCollum knocked down two threes and Barton dished out three assists.

Portland reserves scored 42 points on 16-for-27 shooting and never let Dallas cut into the lead while in the game.

Non-Aldridge starters struggle in first half
LaMarcus Aldridge scored 14 points in the first half on 7-for-11 shooting, but the other four Blazers starters struggled to find their offense. Lillard, Matthews, Batum and Robin Lopez combined to shoot 4-for-17 and score just 14 points before halftime.

Next up
The Blazers face the L.A. Clippers at Staples Center in Los Angeles Saturday at 12:30 p.m. before making a quick turnaround for a Sunday meeting with the Denver Nuggets at Moda Center at 6 p.m.

lol OP with no original thoughts so he spams the board with other people's articles when his team wins. When his team loses, he disappears and doesn't post articles.

guest team just made the most use of our 3rd choking syndrome. If we could stay focused all the way the Blazers would've nary chance at beating us tbh.
