As far as major cities go, New Orleans is one of the poorest. Their bussing and trolly system is in place out of necessity - tens of thousands (if not more) do not have any type of transportation other than public.

So as many here in Texas and elsewhere are talking about all the 'idiots' who aer staying in New Orleans - there is actually a legit reason. Thousands of people cannot get out. Many of those will not ever get out.

Is the city/state trying to help out in any way at all?
I tknink a program of bussing would help.. i mean.. this is a HUGE EMERGENCY thats just knocking at thier dorrstep. .you'd think they'd use every citybus, school bus, charter bus, grayhound bus, and short bus they had on hand.
Hell even dealerships could donate thier 15 passenger vans... they'd be saving part of thier inventory at least.

but mostly "lets get to gether and do some good here people"...... sigh. But it never works out in real life the way it does in big blockbuster disaster movies. :depressed

I teach scuba diving on the side. A couple of weeks ago we had this 14 year old kid in there who had the maturity of a 5 year old (he failed out of the class).

I get that there are tons of people without a means to get out of the city, and yes it's sad and horrific. What I don't get is the "idiots" who choose to stay when they have means of getting out and then choose to go to the bar to party it up, not realizing the magnitutude of this hurricane/monster.

Hmm, I heard 50K for the Superdome. Don't blame them for searching bags for guns and what not.

Now, the mayor deserves an ass whipping for waiting as long as he did. YESTERDAY they should have been commandeering buses, vans, whatever, and trucking people out of NO as fast as they could. Lots of people are going to die because of his inaction until the point of no return (this morning).

You just can't physically evac that many people in what amounts to about 18 hours before the shit hits the fan.

GiG - what you fail to understand is this isn't about me.

This is about the thousands of people that may be dead tomorrow because they are too poor to get out of the city.

I grew up in New Orleans, and I will be there a couple days after Katrina. Most of the people here are Texans or foriegners - people that may not really know much about New Orleans and may be interested in what is happening and how things that may not be reported are impacting the city and surrounding areas.

Just wanted to let you know, I'm safe out of New Orleans now. I left sat and drove down to Miami. Things down here is really bad too, my mom just got her power back. I hope you all are safe and plz keep all those ppl that are stuck in N.O. in your prayers.

As for the original post, inner city NO is probably the worst place in the US to have a hurricane of this magnitude hit. I have a relative who was a cop there. He has some pretty interesting stories, to say the least. Hard to imagine a US metro area of its size under water for a significant amount of time, but it's going to happen and it is not going to be pretty.

Travel from Slidell (outside NO) to Pensacola is 7+ hours and has been for 2 days.

Typically that is a 3-4 hour drive. I seriously doubt she made it to Miami in 15 hours.

I heard the traffic was so bad that an hour trip took five hours. so you can imagine a trip of that magnitude with so much panic around. I also am glad that your friend is safe,

It is so sad that so many people around the world are being affected by this storm, all my prayers are with them.

local college girl's team was down in NO for a tournament and said it took them 3 hours to drive 20 miles. After that it was free and clear like Chloe.
