The Red Sox are pushing to re-sign Jon Lester. This time they are looking to offer
what it takes to sign him. Other teams have shown interest like the Yanks and Braves.

The Sox are looking to trade Yoenis Cespedis who they got in a trade for Jon. Cespedis
has all but said he wont resign with the Sox. He has not connected with the Sox coaching
staff as he wont listen to any of the coaches. They have all but washed their hands of him.
Look for a trade before training camp.

I think that was a decent trade by Beane. Donaldson sucked in the second half last season, his value won't get any higher, Lawrie is a few years younger, and he got two really good prospects out of the deal. However, I still question him giving Billy Butler 3 years/30 million.

Lawrie is always injured and will probably never live up to his potential, and Barretto is the only can't-miss prospect in the deal (and even then, he's not as good as Addison Russell, who the A's stupidly traded away). Donaldson's a legit MVP candidate whose numbers at the plate will improve playing in a hitter's park like the Rogers Centre instead of the Coliseum. No real way to spin this trade for the A's.

As for the Dodgers, hate losing Dee Gordon, but I think the Dodgers got better overall. Kemp is too inconsistent, injury prone, and can't cover the outfield like he used to.

Biernutz
12-11-2014, 04:18 PM
After the Red Sox lost out on Jon Lester they made a good trade to move OF Cespedes who hated Boston.
Getting pitching help in starter Rick Porcello helped Sox fill the hole and cleared some of the log jam in the
outfield. The Sox also picked up left hander Wade Miley who put up 200 innings of work with the D-backs.

He should hitting wise. And I do think the Padres "won" that trade, but the Dodgers trading Kemp had a lot to do with the FO's desire to develop Pederson and free up the logjam at the outfield position. Padres get an exciting player to watch (if he stays healthy) and the Dodgers don't have to play musical chairs with their outfield rotation anymore and get to see what Pederson is made of.

Win/Win for both sides.

Miley could be a great pickup or could be a lame one.

He's good for lots of innings, but he struggled last year and in a big-bat division that could get worse. Or, he reclaims his all-star form from his rookie and sophomore years. He has solid stuff and a good mentality, but he lost touch last year.

Liked the haul they got for him, so hope the trade works out for everyone.

4:20pm: It’s not known which teams remain involved in the bidding, but one involved club was told that a decision is expected soon, tweets Nightengale (https://twitter.com/BNightengale/status/564186813963964417).
4:07pm: The Padres “badly” want Shields and remain the favorites, but they’re being told that there are other teams still heavily involved in the bidding, tweets (https://twitter.com/BNightengale/status/564183142261878784) Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports. Meanwhile, Jim Bowden of ESPN and MLB Network Radio tweets (https://twitter.com/JimBowden_ESPN/status/564175211193311232) that there’s no “impasse” between the two sides, but rather that Shields simply must decide whether or not to accept San Diego’s “last and final offer.”
2:43pm: The Padres and Shields are currently “at an impasse” after several hours of negotiations, tweets Miller (https://twitter.com/ScottMillerBbl/status/564161545408495616). The ball is Shields’ court at this point, he adds.

115 MLB baseball players are starting the season on the disable list. The records
on this was started in the mid 1990's and the highest till this year was 104.
Texas and Oakland have the most with 8 player each and the Twins have none.
The modern MLB player seem to be not as durable as old school players of 20 years
ago. How many pitchers have complete games anymore. Unless he is throwing a no-no
they will pull him after the 6th or 7th inning. Is the year round training and all the fall
winter and summer leagues for teens putting on too much wear and tear on the kids?
A friend of mine son who is 15 plays almost year round. He is on a throw count now
because how much he plays. He catches part time so he throws the ball back to the
pitcher and this puts wear on his arm. Look how many kids and young adults are having
Tommy John. It's not just for pitchers anymore......

The argument is

- No one scores in Petco after 9PM anyway
- Kimbrell is now 1/10 of the payroll
- Braves are expecting Kimbrell to need arm surgery in the next few years
- Braves GM surprised Pads accepted BJ, Pads argue it helps them resign Justin

Padres need to make deep Playoff run, because in 3 years they will be in major rebuilding mode with empty farm system

Braves are over-loading on young pitching. You could argue Hitting is a premium these days. But I expect Braves to load up on hitting in this years draft and might end up packaging some of this pitching for an everyday OF starter in 2 years

Maybe Braves would have been better suited waiting to deal Kimbrell at All Star break for bigger returns. But dumping BJ (2nd worst contract in baseball) was going to require dealing a talent like Kimbrell.

Padres are desperate to Win now but I think this deal will end up haunting them.

Obviously they only have a 2-3 year window, but they weren't getting anything done with their farm system anyway. They've had loads of talent come through year after year only to be traded for more prospects that were eventually traded. At this point they might as well throw caution to the wind and try to win imo.

Jered Weaver's fastball is sitting at 82-85 mph. Even with deceptive delivery and pinpoint location and good secondary stuff, he should expect to get hit hard in most of his starts. He wasn't a hard thrower even when he was great. But low to mid 80s heat? That spells disaster unless he can amp it up to at least to the high 80s.

I agree with that. Smoltz was a guy who excelled in different sports all year long. He's talking about the parents who have their kids play baseball year long which is retarded, especially if they pitch year round. Baseball isn't meant to be played year round. Have any of you seem any Red Sox games at all the past 2 years or what?

This is definitely a gamble and way too much money on 1 person BUT...but it will improve the pitching on that team.

Even if marginal, it will still be an improvement over the likes of Buchholz and whoever is on the pitching rotation these days.

Its not necessary. The Royals are a small market and won with a balanced approach with starting pitching being their least strength. Hard to have a balanced team when you give a massive contract to one player unless you're a large revenue team.

The Royals are about the only team to do this in about a decade.

And even they traded for Cueto.

The Diamondbacks have a lot of young talent, led the NL in runs for most of the year last year (finished 2nd), have four of the best defenders at their positions in the game, and have a plethora of young pitching prospects.

They can afford one stud contract like this.

I maintain I'd rather have had Cueto/Samardja, but that didn't happen.

Personally, I'm just glad they are spending money on real talent.

Goddamn Kevin Towers honest to God gut this team of so much of it.

The Dodgers are going to put the first player statue at the ball park ever. The first
former Dodger star will be Jackie Robinson.

Former Braves Hall of Fame pitcher John Stolz will team with Joe Buck on Fox MLB games this year.

Maybe he'll help the Yanks score a run in a playoff game when he gets out of jail.

Dodgers sign Japanese right hand pitcher Kenta Medea to a 8 year $24 mill contract.
The contract is loaded with incentives.

Former MLB player Dave Henderson passed away at 57.
