Porzingus is the better prospect between him and Okafor, so not surprised. With Randle in the wings, Lakers should take D'Angelo above either of those guys though.

Okafor is a good compliment to Randle actually. I know they need a playmaking guard, but I'd take Okafor over Porzingis in a heartbeat if I'm the Lakers.

Yeah, if I'm in the Lakers, I'd go with Okafor simply because he also has huge potential and better pairs with Randle. A Porzingis and Randle frontcourt would be killer on offense but killed on defense. Okafor isn't a great defender either, but he's getting himself into much better shape and has a good build already. Porzingis seems like he'll be lanky all his career and get bullied inside.

I'd be disappointed if the Spurs draft RJ Hunter. I get it, cheaper and much younger version of Marco Belinelli (that assumes he can crack the rotation in his first season and be productive).

Justin Anderson
Rashad Vaughn
Montrezl Harrell
Delon Wright
R.J. Hunter

My list of domestic players with the best chance of helping the Spurs going forward.

Calling Hunter a cheaper, younger version of Beli sells him short tbqh. Hunter is already a superior defender with better physical tools to continue improving on that front. I get the comp from an offensive standpoint because of his ability to score from any situation, but I see a more well rounded player in Hunter than I do with Beli.

I would actually say I prefer him to Anderson, even though I think Anderson has the better physical tools and ability to be a lockdown defender. Hopefully one or both actually falls to the Spurs and they come away with a great piece. I would also not be upset with Vaughn or Wright as backcourt prospects.

If the Spurs elect to go with De Paula, Tokoto, or Frazier I'd at least hope they trade back into the second and get some additional value for the first rounder. Even then, I like something from each of those players as well.

And that's not even considering the front court prospects. With the "retooling" Pop talked about at season end, I think this could be a good draft to start down that road...plenty of options.

“His best skill is his work ethic,” Granger said. “He has the greatest work ethic out of any player I’ve seen in a long time. KT [also] brings toughness and a deep shooting threat.”Granger also noted Harrell’s value off the court.
“KT is a very unselfish person,” Granger said. “He’s always willing and ready to break an arm and a leg to make sure his teammate has a ride somewhere or is doing well in practice. He’s always checking up on everybody. He’s a good player and a good teammate.”

I dont know. Seems like it would have been killer in 2003 but in today's league I think offenses are rarely featuring one big man with a post game, much less two. Porzingis' range makes him appealing and I really think he'll be the better defensive player btwn him and Okafor in 3 years, by far.

Still if I'm the lakers I take the playmaking SG.

Porzingis has range, but he doesn't have the low post skills or size to be a complete front court player...at least not yet. Okafor has the body ans the present skill set to be effective in the NBA from Day 1. I think he can improve his conditioning and that will pay dividends defensively, though I admit he'll never be an elite defender. He's just a very efficient scorer with the ability to contribute to a team right away. Porzingis isn't as ready and may never be.

I have heard that Hunter is at least average defensively, but I consider Anderson to be the better prospect. He compares favorably to Danny Green physically (same height, longer, and much more athletic)
He's about average as a shooter and maybe more of a SF in the NBA.

Assuming the Spurs keep both Green and Leonard, a wing rotation that also has J. Anderson and K. Anderson would be one of the bigger and more athletic rotations in the league.

Will be interesting to see how picks 21-25 go. Think Cleveland will take Wright, Memphis could take Hunter or Anderson. Would like to see the Spurs trade down. Don't love the idea of taking Hernagomez in the first round when he will probably be available at 37 (Phily is the team i have in mind with the 35th and 37th pick)

I believe today is the last day for International players that are not automatically draft-eligible to withdraw. DraftExpress is tracking the list here: http://www.draftexpress.com/article/2015-NBA-Draft-Early-Entry-List-Withdrawal-Deadline--5093/

So far there have been several withdrawals from players in the late-first to mid-second round mix. Frenchmen Alpha Kaba and Timothe Luwawu have withdrawn, but Mam Jaiteh is keeping his name in. Other big men that have decided to stay in are Hernangomez and Milutinov.

The one they still have as "undecided/unknown" of interest is George Lucas de Paula.

For late second or walk on for our team I am liking:

Normal Powerll - SG - UCLA - 6'4ht - 215pds - 6'11 Wing Span
The kid is athletic and while not a great shooter he is not bad and if Chip can work with him I can see him being a great bench/energy guy.

Damn I was hoping the Spurs could trade the 26th pick to Minnesota for the 31st and 36th pick and pick two of the three: De Paula, Luwawu or Kaba. Seems like the Spurs didn't offer any of them a first round promises in order to stay in the draft.

Wouldn't be mad if the Spurs trade their pick for a future first if the Spurs aren't committed to giving a college kid guaranteed money this season. Also if they plan to land Aldridge, while trying to keep Green around they need all the available salary cap.

Montrezl Harrell and Justin Anderson are very intriguing prospects that can be there when the Spurs draft though. :lol

Agree. He's a bit redundant with Cory Joseph, but he has better size to play off-guard and CoJo may not be here next year.

All three of San Antonio's shooting guards (and five of their six wing players) become free agents this summer, which could definitely prompt the Spurs to look closely at their wing options in the draft. Brown shot 44% for 3 this year, is highly unselfish, and has multipositional versatility defensively with his 6-11+ wingspan, which could help him find a role in Gregg Popovich's rotation.

One of the biggest risers in the draft process. He's a less heralded prospect than Justin Anderson, but he fits the 3&D mold perfectly. Not that it's a prerequisite, but I don't think they've worked him out as of yet. Given the number of 4s and combo guards they've worked out though, I'd be surprised if they went 3&D guard/forward at #26.

TheGoldStandard

I haven't really been following who's going to be available around 26 but are there any perimeter guys who can slash around that pick? Everyone seems to be leaning towards a 3&D guy but what the Spurs lack is an actual scorer who can get there own shot and can slash to the basket and create fouls or kick the ball.

RJ Hunter, Rashad Vaughn and the aforementioned Delon Wright are all capable ball handlers with the ability to score off the dribble and slash through the lane. Unfortunately, all three of them may be gone by the time the Spurs pick.

Two others that would probably be reached at #26 but may be the target...Michael Frazier and Olivier Hanlan. Both are natural scorers.

Chad Ford released his first full mock draft. He has Harrell to the Spurs at #26 and Aaron White in the second. His explanation for Harrell is the same as his previous mock....

(via L.A. Clippers) Harrell has explosive athleticism and is tough, but his lack of focus has scared off some teams. The Spurs are the right sort of culture to nurture his strengths and minimize his weaknesses. They definitely could use some backup help at the 4.

White's a mobile big man who runs the floor well and even became a bit of a stretch shooter this season. He has a great work ethic and seems like the sort of player who would thrive in San Antonio.

Other interesting tidbits on players the Spurs have worked out...

Nance has picked up major late momentum and several teams are considering him in the first round.

Christmas has been a star in the draft process and if he goes in the late first round, I wouldn't be surprised.

Hanlan is also getting looks in the first round -- especially by teams that think he could become a point guard at the next level.

And the fact that he (Joseph Young) hasn't worked out since the combine is suspicious. Multiple sources believe that a team in the late first round made him a promise in exchange for not working out for other teams.

He is 22 and he is playing in a good league so I actually think he could help us he kinda looks like a more athletic Baynes. For a Euro he is pretty athletic and plays very physical and pretty decent rebounder and shot blocker. I would go the CoJo route for him if we picked him.

DX did an extended mock draft today, and they have the Spurs selecting....SG Rashad Vaughn. Here's the write-up...

At this stage in the draft, many teams simply elect to pick the highest upside player they can find in hopes of uncovering a diamond in the rough. Vaughn is the second-youngest player in this class, and entered the year being considered a top-10 recruit before shot-selection and chemistry issues at UNLV torpedoed his stock. The Spurs could decide to roll the dice and see if they are getting a much better prospect than what you would normally expect at the end of the first round. There's a huge shortage of true wing players in the NBA and this draft class, so Vaughn could have some extra value because of that.

I am working with the guy from Wages of Wins to get the WP48 numbers for this draft class. Again, doesn't tell us anything specific, but Spurs seem to pick guys that correlate well with this stat (George Hill, James Anderson, Kawhi...). If there are guys slated to be in the Spurs range, but also correlate well with WP48, might give us some insight.

Both nbadraft and DX have Anderson dropping past the Spurs. Could we luck out really?

Sure. There are always one or two reaches that push other prospects down the board. Kyle Anderson ended up at #30 last year because of Caboclo and Huestis. It's not impossible for Anderson to fall if someone like Martin or an international player is picked ahead of #26. Having said that, it could just as easily be another PF that falls, like Harrell or Looney.

Nathan89
06-23-2015, 04:01 AM
If possible I'd trade Mills for an lower 20's pick for Justin Anderson. Mills value for the spurs is decreasing with Ginobilis continued decline. We need a backup that can share some of the ball penetration to generate offense and Mills isn't that guy. Probably have to go after Stuckey. Justin Anderson's strengths would just thrive in the Spurs system and he's physically ready to contribute in his first year.

I love mills but yeah I would do this trade too!

I've been trying to find that stat for this year's draft class with no luck.

He has not published the data. He's working w someone to hopefully get that done.

I've noticed that Aaron Harrison is not projected to go in the draft in any of the mock drafts. Do you think the Spurs make a phone call to him about a camp invite or can they ask him to join their summer league? He's a decent size guard who can shoot. Doesn't have great speed but pretty solid length and he's from San Antonio and played high school ball in Texas.

Tell him he's free to publish it to my Facebook page... he's bound to get dozens of people to see it there.

Been in the mid-late second round mix for most of the draft process.

I would be perfectly happy with that outcome... not as happy as trading Splitter to draft WCS and picking up LMA... but still happy

Yeah, I took a look at him after AFBlue mentioned he was in the 2nd round.. The one thing that I did like about his workout/interview was that he was hustling, not going half speed.

He has a lot of length and athleticism too. Very intriguing.

that team looks beautiful. Minny Gm is officially my favorite. I think they steal Portlands playoff seed. OKC is gonna have to help us keep Memphis or Houston out.

Yeah.They pretty stacked.

Rubio, Jones
Martin, LaVine
Wiggins,Shabazz
Towns, Payne, Garnett
Pekovic, Dieng

If they can keep it together and successfully develop their talent, then they got next.

all that, plus they could easily keep Neal. Bennett could still turn it around. And Bjelica has made some ripples on Spurstalk. Good lord!

I don't see Bennett turning it around at this point, at least not without a radical change of scenery (i.e. getting traded to a team that is great at developing players like the Spurs). He showed some slight improvement last year, but even with that his stats are equivalent to a borderline NBA player. He's a good rebounder, but he's undersized for a PF, and is a bit slow and has limited range for a SF. Without a team defining a strict role for him and focusing him to build up 1-2 more skills to specialize, I just don't see him suddenly finding that next level he needs to improve.

Draft Denzel Valentine. 4 years under Izzo, look at Draymond Green.

Valentine is Kyle status on defense without the freakish length.

He's laterally challenged like Kyle who makes up for it w/ his freakish length. Kyle/Valentine might be the slowest combo of perimeter players:lol

I like George De Paula if he is available in the second round for us. Maybe even late first depending on his development by that point.
