Pop says Finley will most likely decide tomorrow - maybe Wednesday at the latest. Pop says he thinks Finley will go to Phoenix because he'll start and has some relationships there. Pop said that he was straight with him and told him that he'd come off the bench here.

Kori Ellis
08-29-2005, 04:39 PM
Pop said he'd be surprised if he went to Miami.

Kip Fanatic
08-29-2005, 04:41 PM
Pop tends to stay away from telling the complete truth. He will never admit what exactly goes on in situations like this.

Kip Fanatic
08-29-2005, 04:42 PM
NVE is in town today per Pop.

Kori Ellis
08-29-2005, 04:43 PM
Pop said that he talked to Devin and told him straight up that he had to look at Finley because of the level of player he is.

Pop told Devin that if they signed Finley, they would NOT sign Devin.

Very good chance of Van Exel being in a Spurs uniform. He's in town today. Pop picked him up at the airport.

Kip Fanatic
08-29-2005, 04:43 PM
He seems to be signed by the Spurs.

Kip Fanatic
08-29-2005, 04:43 PM
Something about getting a physical.

Kip Fanatic
08-29-2005, 04:44 PM
I think an announcement will come today later on or maybe tomorrow to see how the physical goes.

Holy crap NVE is going to be a Spur.

Kip Fanatic

I guess NVE didn't care about where Finley went and wants a ring really bad.

Hard to find a better candidate to be the Spurs' 12th man. Spurs just added another guy not afraid to take big shots. Him + Oberto makes this a successful offseason, before what happens with Finley/Brown.

It doesn't effect Finley. NVE is cheap.

Kip Fanatic

Pop is something else. He cracks me up. This is good news for Spurs fans. I know today has been tough because of what is going on in LA., MS., and AL., however, this news helps us take our minds off of that for a while. I am not saying that the Spurs signing NVE erases thoughts about the hurricane, but for a few moments it gives us something else to talk about.

timvp
08-29-2005, 04:58 PM
Damn, Pop must have been drunk. He basically outlined exactly what the Spurs are going to do:

1. Sign NVE today.
2. Wait for The MF to decide whether he is coming to San Antonio. He expects to hear his final decision tomorrow or Wednesday.
3. If The MF says no, then re-sign Devin.

No Pop said NVE and Finley are independent. Finley and Brown a re linked and if Finley doesn't sign they'll definitely sign Brown.

timvp

The big question mark regarding Beno his whole career is his competitiveness. Perhaps what happened is he asked out of the Finals after game two. Or perhaps the Spurs didn't think he cared enough.

Something happened to make the Spurs give up on him. He has the talent and is a great shooter, so it'd be interesting to hear what exactly happened.

Marcus Bryant
08-29-2005, 05:07 PM
If you believe the active roster must fit to a certain form, then the perimeter rotation would look like...

Starters
1 Parker
2 Ginobili
3 Bowen

Bench
1 NVE
2 Barry
2 Brown or Finley
3 GRob or Barnes

That gives you a pure point backup and 3 swings on the bench. Pretty much the standard NBA format.

Of course, there is nothing that says you must have a prototypical rotation. I'd be surprised if they landed Finley but hey, they just got NVE.

If they got Finley and retained GRob the Spurs would have one hell of an experienced, versatile, and nasty bench.

he's rookie-signed for 3 more years with the Spurs, just like Tony was.

From what timvp says, the Spurs are trying move Beno out. Maybe if he corrects what timvp says is an attitude/committment problem (aka "grows up"), the Spurs might keep him.

If Beno was such a slacker then how did he manage to score 25 points his first time starting in the nba, win rookie of the month ( December I believe), and get selected to play on the all star rookie team?

Beno was in over his head at times and made some less than brilliant plays , but name an athlete who hasn't- especially during his rookie year.

Van Exel is a veteran. He ought to be better than Beno.

I seriously doubt Beno asked to be benched. But let's say that he did.

Isn't it better to admit being in over your head than to compromise your team's chance at victory just to prove yourself?

No. You're in the pros, and you go out there and bust your ass, whether you're overmatched or not. Everyone in the arena knows when you're in over your head, and the coaches will adjust accordingly. But, if you go to the coach and say 'I can't do it' then said coach is never going to trust you again - and you're a flat out quitter.

If you're in 7th grade, then yes. If you're in the NBA, then no.

After re-reading the initial post, it was said figuratively, not literally. We like Beno alot at our house -- sure hope he continues to be a Spur and continues to improve... but if not, gotta wonder why.
