View Full Version : KJ McDaniels or Danny Green

Is KJ worth a look with the cap space this offseason if Danny Green gets a big offer?

DG is in a weird situation. In Pop's system, he looks like a great player. Throw him on almost any other team and he probably disappears. How many teams are as unselfish as the Spurs so that DG can put up uncontested 3s all game long? Not many.

It's true, though. Did you see the looks Miami and OKC got their players? Phoenix or GS? Houston? Atlanta? It's not uncommon at all.

He is. Can't shoot a lick, though. He's a four in a two's body.

I really do wonder how hard teams are going to go after Danny or if we'll offer him a fair contract and that'll be that?...

My understanding from 76er blogs was that they'll still be able to match any offer, so McDaniels really isn't an option.

He's shooting better than Green did his rookie year, and McDaniels was a very good free their shooter in college iirc, so he has the potential to be molded into a much better shooter than he is now. He would have been very nice to have as Green insurance.

He's also an Arenas FA, so he can get an OS no bigger than the MLE. I don't see him going anywhere.

Exaggeration. Mbah a Moute can't shoot a lick, Aminu can't shoot a lick, KJ is having to put up tough shots on a horrible team. He's shooting over 40% on corner 3's, albeit from a limited number of attempts.

To quote draftexpress from 2013:

According to Synergy Sports Technology, McDaniels made 39% of his attempts with his feet set, albeit on a fairly limited sample size.

and in 2014

He's relatively reliable with his feet set and a glimmer of daylight (41%), and hits a terrific 87% of his free throw attempts

His problem isn't ability, it's shot selection. Give him the shots that Green gets and he'd be at least average at the NBA level. He'll never be lights out like Green, but to say he's a bad shooter is misinformed.

Actually doesn't that make him applicable for a poison pill contract?

Yeah. But no one's gonna do that for McDaniels. Though it does it that Pick-1 thread I had a few months ago.

Probably the best. Doesn't matter, though. Teams that will have money usually suck, and THEY don't create good looks.

Have you seen his mama's twitter feed? Ridonkulous. Spurs wouldn't be havin' any of that.... They're also NOT going to pay the MLE for a backup SF to a 23 YO star.

Go under the radar and get SG Jamaal Franklin. He's another SDSU Aztec. He's got literally every skill except distance shooting. He didn't have a bad rookie year, he just got caught in a numbers/salary crunch in Memphis and was non-guaranteed. He's 6'5" with a 6'11" wingspan. He's a ferocious rebounder, and in the SDSU 4 guard set essentially played PF and grabbed 9.4 rebounds in 33 minutes per game as a junior. He's in China, but should be available in Feb/Mar.

Of course the Spurs are the best, but the majority of decent teams in the NBA can create open looks, otherwise there wouldn't be any good offensive role players:lol..

Right, but most good teams don't have money to spend that would put him out of the Spurs reach, financially.

I agree, I don't think Green is leaving the Spurs, I don't think any team that could use him to put them over the top could afford him, so I'm confident he will reach a fair deal with the Spurs..

The thought of Green leaving the Spurs and then him guarding Kawhi or Parker is disturbing.

I'm actually beginning to think a team will. I wouldn't be surprised to see someone throw $30m/3yr at him. It's only $12m more than Wiggins (the #1 pick) will get over that time frame and KJ is proving that he belongs in the same league as Wiggins, even if it is early in the season.

I'm not actually sure if the poison pill contract is in play here since the Sixers are under the cap, they may not be forced in to a backloaded deal the way the Knicks and Bulls were. I think it's got something to do with exceptions but I'm not totally sure.

I think the Sixers would match anything up to $10m per for him, if for no other reason than their fan base would go crazy if they lost the only bright spark of an abhorrent season, but it might be a different story if they were forced to pay him 5/5/20 rather than 10/10/10

10 million for a 2nd round rookie who has done nothing to prove his worth or his offensive game on probably the worst team in history.

Are they wiling to ? Market for SG with defense isnt big. Some teams could overpay him.

What do you think overpaying Danny Green would look like? The teams that could pay in excess of the MLE aren't very good.

I don't think the Spurs lose him this summer.

Of course it's a gamble, but you have to pay that kind of figure otherwise Sixers will just match. I'm not saying KJ is worth it, I'm saying that's the kind of number you have to pay to get him away from the Sixers and hope he turns in to Jimmy Butler in a few years.

Spurs never roll the dice like that. They'll go a after someone like Jamal Franklin for the minimum.
