Only a few hours into his tenure as a Spur, Nick Van Exel already is trying to make his first assist.
Van Exel, the veteran guard who signed a one-year contract with the Spurs on Monday, said this morning he has contacted former teammate Michael Finley and urged him to come to San Antonio.
Finley, the most prized free agent in the NBA, is expected to choose among the Spurs, Heat, Suns and Timberwolves as soon as today.
"I did my recruiting," said Van Exel, who played with Finley in Dallas. "But (Finley) didn't give me any hints. I think he wants to keep it a big secret."
If the Spurs don't land Finley, they will turn their attention toward re-signing restricted free agent Devin Brown, coach Gregg Popovich said this morning. Either Finley or Brown would fill the team's need for an extra wing player and give the Spurs 12 players under contract.

I wonder if Cuban planned this all along...
Get Nick and Finley to play for the Spurs in order to Sabbotage their chances of getting out of the west.... Is he paying them in Swiss accounts???

It's a faint possibility considering the Spurs have never fared well when luring FA's with baller reps.
And all of a sudden... boom we would get two, ex-Mavs no-less, taking less than what they would have taken on other teams --- for the "sake of winning".
I hope nothing deceitful is in our midst.

This shows how much Van Exel wants to win. He said in the press conference that he was told that some nights he may play a lot and some nights he won't play at all, but that he just wants to win. If Finley has the same attitude, then he may come to SA too.

Mavs fans are going to hurt themselves. I wonder what the Mavs' season ticket pitch will consist of?
"Buy yours now and help the Mavs pay Michael Finley as he helps the Spurs collect more hardware". ?

Kori, how is Cuban paying off Nick? I did hear that he was owed 12 mil for his final year. However, wouldn't that be the responsibility of the Blazers?

Ya know I'm kidding....
It's part of the "this is too good to be true there has to be something bad" attitude looking to find a downside only not to find one.... it's freaky actually...
It would be a funny thought though... If I see a smirk on Cuban's face when he greets his ex-Mavs beware!!!! :lol
Anyways I guess the downside would be losing out on Devin Brown.... :depressed

Cuban doesn't owe Nick anything - I'm making fun of the people in this thread.
By the way, the Blazers don't owe him anything either - his final year ($12M) was not guaranteed.

If you are all enthralled over Finley...just pop in the 2003 DVD and watch the 4th quarter of Game 6 v. Mavs. A less than inspiring contribution from Finley with 2 or 3 untimely turnovers.
I'd like to see him come to SA and away from the Suns or Heat but he can be a liability sometimes, too, you know.

Unofficially (and If I had that type of change) I could give Van Exel 12 million dollars by hiding it in an unmarkded Swiss account....

Got it. Come to think of it, I read somewhere that Nick was pissed that Cuban made a verbal guarantee that he would "take care of the final year" on Nick's contract. Then he traded him the same season and of course, Portland lets him go to bypass the 12 mil commitment.
Nick is still revered around these parts and talk is he'd love to get back at Cuban for breaking his promise.

I like Devin as a Spur. I think its mostly because he is SA product (West Campus and UTSA), but I say if you have a chance of adding a former All-Star who can give you 20+ on any given night (with enough minutes that is), then you go get him. People here keep talking about saving players for down the line. The Spurs want to win as many championships as they can now. Not just in the future. Bowen isn't getting younger and I can also say that about Tim, Robert, Barry, and Manu. The Spurs have to worry about this season.

Neither option is bad. I'd give Finley the edge based on what he's capable of and the fact that you'd be keeping him away from some other serious contenders, but keeping DBrown would be rather nice.

Barry

I think NVE was a great pick up. It really relieves the pressure on our two young PGs. But I am not sure how Finley will help us much. Devin Brown is often better defensively, and we don't really need his offense that much. I won't be sad if Finley signs, but he won't get many minutes. Really, Miami is probably his best bet for playing time. If he wants the money (Which he shouldn't since he's already getting paid) he'll sign with the Suns.

Begging?
"Hey Fin, what's up dog. Yeah, just signed with the Spurs. These mothafuckers is some badass mothafuckers. You should sign here man."
That's begging?
It's a little different when a newly sign player makes a pitch from his cell phone than a team sending everyhting and the kitchen sink to the player himself. A lot different.
Don't confuse the two. You're good at confusing things. Like real women and guys dressing up as them. You confused the two a lot. On purpose I think.
