I realize nobody cares much about high school exploits, oh well.

The guy was incredible in HS, totally amazing. On a whole other level....would work. We all know what he did at A&M, pretty much the same things he did in HS, yep...on another level. Well he won't be on another level this time but I do expect to see some magic, maybe not in his first start however.

I kinda think we'll see ...."wow!"...but a lot of..."Oops"....also. I can't see him being a consistant pocket passer, and he really is way too frail to think about running much. But.....with his skill set if he ran by design with the focus on ....get what ya can then bail.....that would make defending him rough. When it's....will he run or pass....it's hard on a defense. Everyone knows where Peyton/Brady will be.

Hell struggle some early on like all rookies do but if he continues to get down and avoid the big hit he will be a very solid qb. His passing skills have always been and continue to be very underrated. Guy can make every single throw asked of an NFL QB. There will be inconsistencies starting out and people will make a huge deal about those but what young QB doesn't make mistakes.

I'd imagine you're going to continue seeing basic concepts until Manziel actually has a better grasp of the playbook.

There's been a mix of running from the pistol and more traditional formations, neither have been overly successful.

The biggest takeaway here is that you can expect more creativity when they can't execute basic.

He's not anything special, tbh.

Disappointing but it will be overblown bc of how bad Cleveland played in all facets. Some poor decisions and timing issues that should improve with time. Retards will go with the 'lol monkeyball' analysis but his ability to extend plays is clearly a positive.

He needs to find a balance. He had happy feet at times, other times his receivers just didn't make the catch after he extended the play.Your usage of the word reliance has always been retarded. It implies that that makes up the majority of his game.

Nothing about the way he played today shows he will be a decent to good quarterback. He is everything every scout that didn't draft him said he is (i.e. too short, too undisciplined, poor pocket passer, etc.) Deal with it already and admit you were worshiping a false messiah.

i agree, the first pick is something that is going to come with experience. he hasn't played in a pro style offense, which is based on timing/drop-backs/route concepts. even though the left side of the field looked cluttered, you can see Gordon running a fly route to clear the area. instead he waited until the space vacated and only then threw it. ideally you throw it knowing that the space WILL vacate based on the routes you are running and the fact that they're playing man

the second pick is basically what i always made fun of him for, with that gif of his jump pass and shit (even though in the gif i always post its a completion)... that's gna have to be erased from his mental playbook

the receivers weren't doing him any favors, but its clear the defense was teeing off on Manziel because they knew what was coming with all the zone-read stuff

Manziel becomes the sixth quarterback in the last 20 years to be shut out in his first start, and the first since the great Rusty Smith of Tennessee in 2010.

The other greats include: Dave Ragone of Houston (2003), Henry Burris of Chicago (2002), Spergon Wynn of Cleveland (2000) and Danny Wuerffel of New Orleans (1997).

But ya let's blame extenuating circumstances....:rolleyes

:lol from another forum...

Anyone who had anything to do with that pick should be fired on the spot. Not just anyone who said "lets trade up for Manziel" but anyone who remained silent instead of shouting "NOOOOOO!!!!!" at the top of their lungs.

I never actually saw addressed any of the arguments against Manziel. He was hyped based on celebrity. Those who argued he was the best qb (especially that old TMZSPN fool) made vague arguments about how Manziel would succeed because he was just that awessome that he would always succeed at everything. Some allusions to intangible factors like magic. Numbers showing his effectiveness in college.

But the points about him having no pocket presence, running too often, about running qbs not working in the NFL, about him throwing the ball up and hoping Evans catches it, about the NFL being too fast and too hard and him to small and too slow, were never actually addressed. There were no answers. Imagined fairy dust clearly would not be able to completely cover all these problems.

And I never thought that people whose jobs are to pick players for an NFL team worth hundreds of millions of dollars, with millions of fans, would pick a player without answering any of those doubts.
If you are spending 3 months watching tape after tape, meeting the players, discussing it with all your colleagues in the team, then I don't understand how you can spend (late) 1st and 3rd round picks on a quarterback unless you are pretty sure he is going to be good.

Ever since the moment they drafted him its been clear they did not have that in Cleveland, that there were people who didn't want to spend a 1st on him but for one reason or another didn't speak their mind. That there wasn't no secret magic to Manziel that only Cleveland knew about.

I understand any player can be a bust. I understand there are players which coming out of college divide opinion on how good they can be. I understand that people can bust even if they look good. And in those cases a team might take a player becuase they see all the positives and think he can be a good player but it just doesn't turn out.

But sometimes, as in this case, people take a player despite knowing that they don't have many positives, and simply hoping and praying that they will getlucky and it will work.

With Manziel it was the latter. Watching and reading all the pre draft scouting reports and discussions and talks, I never heard people put forward solid arguments as to how his game would transition to the NFL.

Its shocking that a multi million dollar organization can show that level of incompetence. Its really not that hard. I know far less about American Football than 99% of posters here, been watching it far less, and knew little to nothing about the prospects in the draft besides the top 20 or so names, but I'm pretty sure that I could have had a better draft than the 1 billion dollar worth Cleveland team put together this year, simply by making sure picks are based entirely on potential and not on hype, planning for every scenario, making sure there is agreement within the team, forcing everyone to put forward real, tangible arguments as to why each player will be good. etc.

I do not believe Cleveland had some secret information about Manziel that no one in the media or on the 20 NFL teams that passed on him, had, that led them to believe he would succeed. They knew as much as everyone else, but took him anyway for the same reason Manziel threw that ball up for his 2nd interception against Cincinati, for the same reason a degenerate gambler bets his mortgage on a game of chance. Hoping everything will be all right.

Their decision to trade the 5th rounder to trade up 1 spot for Gilbert who Minnesota were not likely to take, confirms to me the Browns didn't really know what they were doing.

Buffalo's decision to trade a 1st round pick to move up 4 spots for a wide receiver in a deep wide receiver class was the same, as to a lesser extent I felt the Texans decision to not trade up for Bridgewater or to take Carr when both players had clear upsides, and a 2nd round pick isn't that much, also showed surprising incompetence for an NFL level organization.

All of those above decisions truck me at the time as desperate or stupid, and they struck people in this forum at the time as stupid and desperate, and they didn't work out. Its no coincidence that they didn't work out. They were % wise the wrong play, and based on something other than the question of what is best for the franchise going forward.

Far better to do what Jacksonville did and possibly overdraft a quarterback when the entire organization is at least in agreement for months leading up to the draft that this is the player who the team will attempt to build itself around.

Those sort of picks prove that one doesn't really require talent to work in the NFL (outside of playing). Some people who work in the NFL may have talent, but if people who actually thought it was worth a first and third round pick to get Manziel, managed to get jobs in the NFL then any goofball with the right luck and connections can get a job there.

I'm not calling manziel a bust based on his limited action this year. I didn't have high hopes anyway and I just haven't seen anything to change that

i don't know man, to me, when it concerns a qb, it is more important what he doesn't have going for him than what he does have (which in JFF's case, is being white :lol). An undersized qb with a weak arm a tendency to run and a bad work ethic cannot be an average qb in the nfl, not even in his dreams, no matter how many other things he has going for him.

He had a lot of attention surrounding him bc of who he is, but as an NFL prospect he was never considered some sure thing. He had plenty of detractors. i didnt say they have the same flaws. in fact, if we're talking pure arm strength, vince young is better than johnny. But i specifically said they were flawed prospects in different ways. but yes, much like vince young (an obviously flawed prospect) and like Tim Tebow (a very obviously flawed prospect), Manziel was drafted way higher than he should have been because of his notoriety.

there were some very harsh manziel critics pre-draft... so dont act like he was universally loved or universally considered a first round caliber player

Not just different but completely unrelated. You don't compare guys whos biggest flaw was something as fundamental as their throwing motion to a guy like Football. Its beyond idiotic and its amazing that some of you still use those guys as legit comparisons.

And no shit he had a healthy amount of detractors. That was my point, high profile =/= rated higher than he should've been. What round do you suggest he should've gone in anyway? Considering how sought after QBs are and the fact that no other QB stood out I'm not sure how much lower you expected him to go. Nevermind the fact that by your logic the other first round QBs would fall under 'extremely overrated NFL prospects' category as well.

you are completely missing the boat. i'm not comparing their flaws, and i've been very clear in that. heck, young and tebow were VERY different players... the comparison i'm making is that they were celeb status college players with the "it factor" which got them drafted in much higher positions than the tape should have dictated.

i thought Bortles was drafted too high. i was fine with where Bridgewater and Carr were drafted (tbh i actually figured the raiders would need to trade back up into the first to take Carr). i had manziel behind carr, bridgewater, bortles, and mettenberger. i didnt want the raiders to draft him (except for one day where i was delusional and i soon after retracted that :lol) because i didn't think he had NFL quarterback written on him

I knew what you were trying to say. Its retarded.

You can use the celebrity shit with those two guys bc they had fundamental flaws in their throwing motions and still got picked as high as they did. Football doesn't have that fundamental flaw. i disagree with most of this. i dont think he has good tools to work with. he's a scrambler who isn't as fast as most defensive ends. he has an average arm with mediocre, inconsistent accuracy. not to mention he seems to be completely inept when it comes to running a pro-style offense. you have mediocre football tools virtually no football IQ

no. now you are just making a strawman argument. i think carr and bridgewater have played damn well to justify their draft positions, and in fact have outperformed them. bortles and manziel have underachieved (manziel in his limited time).

i never set ridiculously high standards for what a QB needs to do in year 1, but there are NO standards by which manziel played well in his limited time.

if anything, considering preseason, season and contest, imo the qb generation should be ranked like this:
Carr
Garoppolo
Bortles
Mettemberger
Manager
Thomas
Manziel

so i put manziel above savage and the cincinnati guy, both of which have not shown anything at all.

Manziel can't afford to screw around. He isn't Brett Favre, who goofed off early in his career but skated by because he had great natural ability. Manziel doesn't have great natural ability, at least not at this level. He's going to have to work his ass off to make it in this league and he's admitted himself he hasn't done that. Or it could be bc he's a rookie that just wasn't ready to be thrown into a playoff race.

I wanted him to be thrown in there but he wasn't ready. He looked awful. Hes a dude that could do anything he wanted in college, he needs more than 6 quarters to adjust to the NFL. Who knows maybe he'll never be good enough but regardless 6 quarters isn't a fair amount.

Almost hurts as much as when TD21 calls me a fat, inbred hick.:cry

I live in Tyler, the same town as the Footballs, and they they're rich assholes. :cry

I'm not sure where the whole jealousy angle comes from anyway. No one around here wants to be a Manziel. The whole family is scum. They aren't even good at being criminals.:lol

Well, for one they're irrelevant to all of us and yet here you are bringing them up every chance you get. :lol

But that's not jealousy tbh. I just want him to fail because those faggot Manziels deserve it.

Call it what you want. Its still feminine behavior. Especially when you've brought them up like ten times in this thread alone.

why did this become a thread about "jealousy". some of us saw the manziel failure coming from a mile away, and this season has illustrated both his on and off the field issues (though i mainly focus on the on-the-field stuff). sure, like anybody else, he has a chance to get better, but he's just not a great prospect imo, and nothing from what i've seen has changed my opinion.

Changing your skin depending on the circumstances is a pretty female thing to do as well.

Please. You can hide behind technicalities if you want faggot. Truth is equating posters going at each other to you bringing up the Footballs is pretty dumb.

You being retarded again. Shocker.

I do look for NFL teams to start taking character/personality/maturity more into account that ever before because of Manziel/Winston. No way I'm drafting Winston, it's real obvious he has no clue what's going on, yep, just like Manziel.
