Rondo is a terrible basketball player, so usually I would say it's a stupid move, but the Mavs are so terrible at PG that it may not be such a bad idea..

Whatxexactly do the Mavs have to offer? A crappy 1st rounder and Ricky Ledo? Doubt that even gets Boston's trade weeny to flinch a little.

I would assume a combination of a player and future draft picks? Reports are Boston wants multiple picks for him.

The thing is, Rondo will be a FA next summer, and will almost certainly not re-sign with Boston as they are nowhere near contending. So, Boston needs to trade him this year even if they don't get equal value. They likely won't rush it, but they almost have to move him this year.

Wojo:
Mavericks are willing to give Boston a 2015 first-round pick with limited lottery protection, sources told Yahoo Sports. Before a deal is consummated, Dallas needs to confer with Rondo's agent, Bill Duffy, about the franchise's ability to re-sign him as a free agent in the summer. Those conversations wouldn't happen until an agreement is in place. If Rondo agrees to this, the deal is set.

Mavericks will not go for this trade unless Rondo agree that the Mavericks will resign Rondo during free agency. If Rondo and his agent agrees, the deal is complete.

true, so we'd need to seek another trade or involve a 3rd team in the deal. we have a band of guards right now who're decent enough to be 6-7th guys on most NBA teams but whose minutes would be further severely compressed after Rondo's arrival. We'll need to trade them away anyway, and it shouldn't be too hard to find a few potential buyers for Harris and Nelson (Felton is flat out trash though).

Rondo improves Dallas' perimeter D but he can't play with Ellis. Giving up Harris and Wright for him is also dumb. As a Spurs fan I hope they give up Harris; he kills the Spurs in the playoffs like Mo Williams does in the regular season.

Rondo just isn't a good player anymore, tbh..
This is typical NBA "name recognition" hype..he hasn't been an All-Star caliber player since 2012..
Why do people never learn about point guards that can't shoot? It doesn't work in the NBA, it's way too easy to shut down..

I don't get everyone saying "Rondo needs the ball in his hands and won't mesh with Monta". Rondo spent years in Boston with Pierce and Allen handling the ball plenty, and there wasn't much of an issue. The bigger problem is Carlisle, who is notorious for being overly hard on PG's. I could see that being a big issue.

Allen was running around, spotting up for open J's while Pierce handled the ball posting up but iirc only during crucial moments or in the 4th quarter. And he wasnt as ball dominant then. Also Monta needs and uses the ball more than Pierce or Allen in order to be effective.

I would imagine their go to line up after the trade would be:
Rondo
Ellis
Parsons
Dirk
Chandler
Rondo and Chandler can be shut down relatively easy, but Dirk can create for a lot of guys.
Parsons can nail the open shot, and Dirk can create his shot anywhere on the court.
Ellis can create for himself and others, but it would be easier to funnel him by leaving Rondo open
Dirk can create for himself and others, but it would be easier to double him by leaving Chandler relatively open without letting him roll to the basket
Parsons can be contained by sticking a man on him constantly
Defensively, Rondo and Chandler can man the perimeter and the paint, respectively. Dirk is average, Parsons can easily be exploited, Ellis is inconsistent, and can be explioted through movement.
Overall, the Mavs will still have too many holes, and it depends whether Carlisle can cover up those holes well. A team like the Spurs, GSW, Rockets, or Grizzlies matches up very well with them and the road to the finals will go through at least one of those teams. The Mavs however, matches up well with OKC, and Blazers.
I don't see this move improving the Mavs chances significantly. They may win a few more games in the regular season, but will not likely go too much deeper in the playoffs, likely the 2nd round.

I am a huge Spurs and Bulls fan, and I can tell you that 6 is the biggest epic chokejob in NBA history I have ever seen, but it pains me to say it. So yeah, I ain't ever forgetting that cluster fuck. The Spurs redeemed themselves in 2014 and destroyed the Miami Heat 4-1, but the stinger from 6 still hurts.

So this is how this is working... A lot of you are asking how things go down etc.
Ainge is leaking all this to all the big reporters - Amick, Stein, Woj, Spears... Just to name a few.
He obviously has an agenda. He is trying to get the price up, up, up! He leaks the names of these teams so people can put their offers out there and compete. This is obviously his reasoning behind all this.
He really wants the Lakers to give their first (Rox first), Randle, and also Nash's expiring (which the costs are mostly covered by insurance).
It is now becoming more of a bidding war.

Brandan Wright is going to be a free agent after this season, and most likely will get a decent pay raise. I like this trade, if only for the fact that it lowers the likelihood of him resigning with Dallas. He'd be a perfect player to platoon with Splitter, because his strengths are pretty much the opposite of Tiago's in terms of match ups. He'd be the better small ball center to play against athletic teams like Golden State, while Tiago would be the better choice against bulkier teams like Memphis.

Idk man.... The more I look at that Mavs package the more I laugh. Lol that package fucking sucks........ Mavs beat writers are claiming the talks are very real and far along but I don't see it.
Ainge is playing Cuban and Morey can trump any deal Dallas makes. Easily
The Rockets have been linked to Rondo since last season. If they REALLY wanted him they could have had them by now. Ainge won't have much of a choice
I just don't see Dallas getting him. Period....... They don't have the assets to get it done, even with Rondo's decreasing value. That says it all

Beverley is a loser.
Those are the only two teams in play I believe. I know Cybrex says Lakers but Rondo wants to go to a winner.

Could be. If Ainge is legitimately interested in Monta Ellis in a deal, then Houston is trying to drive up the price for Cuban.

It occurs to me that not only is Rondo a terrible fit in Dallas, he's actually not among the top half of starting PGs in the NBA now.
More fun with Rondo stats. The Mavs thrive on PnR actions with Dirk. Rondo ranks in the 18th percentile as a PnR ball-handler, per Synergy.

Per Synergy, Rondo is 31st percentile on D this year. Doing a good job against PnR, though, at 66th%. Last year, 11th%. 40th vs. PnR.
Jordan Brenner @JordanBrenner (https://twitter.com/JordanBrenner) 1h1 hour ago (https://twitter.com/JordanBrenner/status/545686433143750656)
Mavs built around PnR. Rondo is 18th % per Synergy. 11th percentile last year. That's not about his PnR partners. That's having no jumper.
Jordan Brenner @JordanBrenner (https://twitter.com/JordanBrenner) 1h1 hour ago (https://twitter.com/JordanBrenner/status/545685879399153666)
Having a point guard who wants to control and probe compromises the entire point of the system. And it's one based off PnR.
Jordan Brenner @JordanBrenner (https://twitter.com/JordanBrenner) 1h1 hour ago (https://twitter.com/JordanBrenner/status/545685606547087361)
The argument I keep getting is that Rondo is a distributor/gets assists. @haralabob (https://twitter.com/haralabob) has done a great job explaining Rondo's "assist whoring"
Jordan Brenner @JordanBrenner (https://twitter.com/JordanBrenner) 1h1 hour ago (https://twitter.com/JordanBrenner/status/545685283631820800)
Is Rondo better than Nelson? Yes. Is he a better fit offensively? No, because you can at least station Nelson on the weak side a 3PT threat.
Jordan Brenner @JordanBrenner (https://twitter.com/JordanBrenner) 1h1 hour ago (https://twitter.com/JordanBrenner/status/545685439148195840)
This isn't fantasy basketball. You don't just add a player because he's "better" than your current starter. You have to consider fit.
