"To be a part of a championship team, I'm excited," Finley said. "This is the closest I've ever been to a championship. I'm looking forward to the challenge of helping this team repeat."

The closest he's ever been to a championship is joining the Spurs before the season even starts? :lol

Miami's Pat Riley, Phoenix's Amare Stoudemire and Minnesota's Kevin Garnett were among the big names to fly to Chicago last week to make face-to-face pitches to Finley. In the end, he went with the team that sent a one-man delegation Spurs coach Gregg Popovich -- to Finley's hometown

Here's the whole article:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/colum...marc&id=2147720

The team that won the Michael Finley Sweepstakes is the same team that just won an NBA championship.

Finley told ESPN.com on Wednesday that he has chosen to sign with the San Antonio Spurs, spurning a richer offer from the Miami Heat and the lure of an emotional return to the Phoenix Suns to reunite with close friend Steve Nash.

Hey Dallas, Michael Finley is heading to your conference rivals. The Dallas Mavericks tried for weeks to move Finley to an Eastern Conference team to prevent him from joining the Spurs or the Suns. When it couldn't swing a trade before the Aug. 15 deadline to exercise the NBA's new amnesty clause, Dallas reluctantly waived the two-time All-Star, making Finley an unrestricted free agent and the target of an intense two-week courtship that also involved the Detroit Pistons and Minnesota Timberwolves.

Miami's Pat Riley, Phoenix's Amare Stoudemire and Minnesota's Kevin Garnett were among the big names to fly to Chicago last week to make face-to-face pitches to Finley. In the end, he went with the team that sent a one-man delegation Spurs coach Gregg Popovich -- to Finley's hometown.

The complete structure of the deal with San Antonio hasn't been finalized, including the length of the contract, but Finley will receive a starting salary of roughly $2.5 million this season.

"To be a part of a championship team, I'm excited," Finley said. "This is the closest I've ever been to a championship. I'm looking forward to the challenge of helping this team repeat."

Asked why he picked San Antonio, Finley said: "In a nutshell, they're already a championship team but they have room for improvement. And I feel my game can help them in the areas where they need improvement."

Landing Finley, 32, completes an impressive summer haul for the Spurs, who felt a need to be as aggressive as they've ever been in free agency after struggling to holds leads of 2-0 and 3-2 over Detroit in a taut-as-possible NBA Finals. They expect Finley to supply off-the-bench punch and a reliable 3-point stroke as the third wing of a swing trio that features All-Star guard Manu Ginobili and defensive specialist Bruce Bowen.

Since free agency began July 1, San Antonio has also re-signed playoff hero Robert Horry, added wily Argentinean post man Fabricio Oberto to the frontcourt rotation and Monday signed fiery veteran point guard Nick Van Exel, Finley's former Dallas teammate.

Popovich's foremost challenge next season will be massaging playing time and egos with a roster far deeper than the Spurs typically carry. It remains to be seen, for starters, what role remains for Brent Barry, who was San Antonio's marquee newcomer last summer.

Yet it's a challenge Popovich welcomes, after lengthy struggles to find a bench spark in the wake of Ginobili's emergence and knowing that the Spurs' perimeter shooting could use an upgrade to capitalize on the ability of Tim Duncan and Ginobili to collapse defenses. It's believed that Van Exel, like Horry, isn't interested in heavy minutes during the regular season and wants badly to fit in with the Spurs for a shot at a championship. It was also clear during the playoffs that San Antonio could use a playoff-tested alternative at point guard to the up-and-down Tony Parker, whose only backup last season was untested rookie Beno Udrih.

Missing out on Finley, meanwhile, comes as a blow to the Suns more than any other spurned suitor. With Nash as lead recruiter, and banking on Finley's fond feelings for the desert after starting his career there in 1995, Phoenix was hoping to land the 10-year veteran to start him in the guard slot vacated by Joe Johnson. Finley would have joined Raja Bell, Boris Diaw and the returning Jim Jackson in a group approach to replacing Johnson.

The Suns, though, could only offer Finley a veteran minimum salary of $1.1 million for next season. Failing to land Finley doesn't necessarily knock Phoenix from its top-two perch in the West, after the Suns made their own series of roster tweaks, but figures to make it tougher for them to close the gap on the team that knocked Phoenix out in last spring's Western Conference finals.

The Heat, widely regarded as the favorites in the Finley chase, were offering a starting salary at the full mid-level exception ($5 million) and the chance to team with Shaquille O'Neal and Dwyane Wade. Yet with the Heat already having added Antoine Walker, Jason Williams and James Posey in a five-team trade last month, Finley ultimately decided to pass on seeing how he'd fit into that mix. Instead he joins a club known for meshing quickly, with Duncan serving as the only constant on three very different championship teams.

Finley's decision will also come as a blow to the Mavericks and particularly star forward Dirk Nowitzki, who with Finley and Nash formed what was known in Dallas as a close-like-brothers Big Three. The Mavericks didn't want to see Finley follow Nash to Phoenix, but they were rooting against San Antonio, too, hoping their former face of the franchise would choose Miami or Detroit after the fruitless trade attempts.

The Mavericks decided they had to waive Finley because the amnesty clause will spare Dallas future luxury-tax payments on the nearly $52 million it still owes him. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban estimates the total savings over the next three seasons to be closer to $90 million, because Finley will receive his remaining Dallas salary in annual installments of less than $5 million.

I can't figure out why Finley picked the Spurs. The Heat were offering more money, more spotlight, more endorsement opportunities and a good chance to make the Finals. With the Suns, he could play with two of his best friend (Nash and Bell), he could start and he'd be on an up-and-coming team that is coming off of a WCF's appearance.

The Spurs? Uhhhhh ... he won't start, he won't make too much money, he's going to a small market and won't be a top scoring option. The only thing the Spurs give him is the best chance to win a ring.

It's all about the championship. That's all Finley wants.

Absolutely incredible. Much as we'll miss Devin Brown, this signing (plus the addition of van Exel) makes the Spurs the deepest squad in the league.

Don't forget---the one thing the Spurs haven't done in their recent glorious history is to repeat. This gives them a SERIOUS edge on doing that. Forget about Finley's past 'playoff failures,' remember he never played on a team with Duncan in the post and Ginobili/Parker in the backcourt.

Depending on the contract specifics, it will also be interesting to see if this leads to any other deals. Not that I think they SHOULD make any....this roster is stacked!!!

I didn't know about this until my Mavs fan friend called me and opened the conversation with "I fucking hate you."

I could've gone either way between Finley and Brown. Brown has the hometown-boy likeability factor, but Finley is the better player (and a good guy to boot).

The best part of this is seeing the Sports Media eat crow. Guess "Playing alongside Shaq for a shot at a Championship" is not much of a draw after all.

jcrod
08-31-2005, 06:21 PM
I can't figure out why Finley picked the Spurs. The Heat were offering more money, more spotlight, more endorsement opportunities and a good chance to make the Finals. With the Suns, he could play with two of his best friend (Nash and Bell), he could start and he'd be on an up-and-coming team that is coming off of a WCF's appearance.

The Spurs? Uhhhhh ... he won't start, he won't make too much money, he's going to a small market and won't be a top scoring option. The only thing the Spurs give him is the best chance to win a ring.

It's all about the championship. That's all Finley wants.

Amazing.

Refreshing....Nick and Finley just showed they really do care about winning more than money. They're putting their money were their mouths are. Of course the Spurs showing they really do come through with the winning doesn't hurt.

Wow... I'm shocked. People are forgetting how good this team was last year. They were on pace for 63-64 wins when Tim got hurt in Detroit. Now you fill their two biggest holes, backup PG and backup SF, with two guys of the caliber of Van Exel and Finley? Holy shit. The Spurs might have been one of the 10 greatest teams in NBA history if Duncan hadn't gotten hurt, and now they return all but one major rotation player and are now two deep with starters / borderline starters at every position. Unlike the 2000 TrailBlazers though, they have a first ballot hall of fame franchise player in his prime who can carry them.

This is just insane. The team has a ridiculously young yet highly experienced starting lineup, with sick bench depth of veterans who have all played in huge games, save Oberto. Beno Udrih just went from 8th man to 12th! This kind of talent is just ridiculous. You could trade Beno, but for what? What the heck does this team need?

Franchise bigman: Check - Tim Duncan
Bigtime Perimeter scorer: Check - Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker
Lockdown interior defender: Check - Tim Duncan
Lockdown perimeter defender: Check - Bruce Bowen
Three Point Shooting: Check - Manu Ginobili, Brent Barry, Bruce Bowen, Robert Horry, Nick Van Exel, Michael Finley
Fastbreak attack: Check - Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, Tim Duncan, Brent Barry
Midrange shooting: Check - Manu Ginobili, Michael Finley, Nick Van Exel
Bigman Depth: Check - Tim Duncan, Nazr Mohammed, Robert Horry, Rasho Nesterovic, Fabreicio Oberto
Clutch Shooting: Check - Tim Duncan, Robert Horry, Nick Van Exel, Manu Ginobili, Michael Finley
Playoff mean-streak: Check - Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Robert Horry, Nick Van Exel, Michael Finley
Outstanding Ball movemont: Check - Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Robert Horry, Brent Barry

Center - Tim Duncan, Nazr Mohammed, Rasho Nesterovic, Fabricio Oberto
Power Forward - Tim Duncan, Robert Horry, Fabricio Oberto
Small Forward - Bruce Bowen, Michael Finley, Robert Horry
Shooting Guard - Manu Ginobili, Brent Barry, Michael Finley, Nick Van Exel, Beno Udrih
Point Guard - Tony Parker, Nick Van Exel, Beno Udrih

Do you realize there's not one garbage player on the active 12? Not one guy who's there just to take up space or fill in for someone when he's hurt. Any of these guys would probably be major rotation players on any other championship contenders in this league - the only one I have doubts about is Oberto, but I'm confident he can play after seeing what he's done for team Argentina.

Duncan
Ginobili
Parker
Bowen
Mohammed
Finley
Horry
Van Exel
Barry
Nesterovic
Udrih
Oberto

Holy fucking shit. The only thing that can derail this team is a serious injury to Tim, Manu, Tony, or Bruce. I can't see how this team's not going to win. I had the same feeling last offseason looking at how stacked we were then, and I called 64-18, and was right until Tim got hurt.

Honestly, I think this is a team that's going to go 68-14. I can't see this team not flirting with 70. The only team that will have any shot whatsoever against the Spurs will be Houston.

Do you guys realize our 12-man rotation has 19 rings between them? Fabricio Oberto is the only player on the team who hasn't played in a conference finals.

Duncan
Ginobili
Parker
Bowen
Finley
Horry
Van Exel
Barry

These are the guys who've had absolutely legendary playoff moments....

Duncan - of course the 21/20/10/8 he put up in game 6 of the 2003 Finals
Ginobili - 15 points in the 4th quarter of game 1 of the Finals
Parker - destroying Jason Kidd in game 3 of the 2003 Finals
Bowen - 28 points while holding Kobe Bryant to like 18 in game 2 of the 2003 WCSF
Finley - Singlehandedly beating the Utah Jazz in 2000
Horry - 21 points and the game-winner in the Final 17:01 of game 5 of the 2005 Finals
Van Exel - Singlehandedly beat the 2003 Kings
Barry - 21 points on 5-8 from the three-point line in game 1 of the 2005 WCF on the road

Finley - Singlehandedly beating the Utah Jazz in 2000

That is the series I think about when I hear his name. He was AMAZING in that series. I remember some of those games where he would come up the court and drain 28 foot threes late in the game. He was on fire and was knocking down shots that were closer to half court than the freakin' three point line.

He's had some other not so great playoff moments, but he did that against the Jazz ... a team the Spurs have never beat in the playoffs.

Only a playoff-ending injury to TD can do that.

I can't believe you just said that!

Asked why he picked San Antonio, Finley laughed and said: "To be honest, I just didn't want to run into Bruce the Noose during the year and in the playoffs and become a poster boy like Carmelo, Ray, Shawn, Rip and Chauncey."

That's why I never use those terms when speaking. It's a no brainer "Duh!!" kind of thing.

not necessarily. I use them to differentiate fact from my opinion so there is no question. With some people, you don't know if they are saying their opinion or if they feel they are saying a fact.

Like what timvp and Marcus stated, the only reason for Finley to sign here is to win. It was a win-win for the Spurs. If he goes somewhere else for more money or minutes it will show his true priorities. To take less of both says a whole lot about him.

Fin, you impressed me. Welcome.

This signing also shows that it's not about the $$ with Finley since it was also rumored Cuban would have paid out his $51mil quicker if he didn't sign with Spurs or Suns. Finley appears to be a class act, which explains why he'll fit right in here with the other "Get Over Yourself" guys who just wanna win, Baby!!

NICE! Finley can only help & not hurt our team, great addition. Depth is key in sports & this has to be the most deepest & talented bunch & bench to date in Spurs history!

D.Brown will be missed b/c he was a classy person & player, has potential, is young, has crazy hops (as displayed when healthy throwing down nice dunks) & is improving his game, but his injury is what forced the Spurs to be agressive & add the likes of MF & NVE!

Should be fun to watch our defending champs, but nothing is guaranteed in sports except winning, losing, injuries, greedy players & owners & ticket hikes!

It was a test of how bad he wanted it. Now the Spurs have every spot filled plus bench offense plus an extra big game player to go to. Finally the Spurs are starting to get some pull with free agents.
These signings will lead to others in the future. Players who wanted to sign but chose not to for other reasons like money. Remember Jermaine O'Neal wanted to sign here. When his coach was let go he was mad and said if he had known this was going to happen he would of sign with the Spurs. Next time he will and so will others.

Holy shite! CIA Pop strikes again!

I'm ecstatic but now I really wonder if the front office is going to hang on to Barry.

I still think his smarts and ball handling ability at his height will pay off. Besides, with the positions all lined up, the only reason to trade anyone is for picks and Barry wouldn't bring in a first.

Tim Duncan's dream of making some titles, win championships in San Antonio for some players to see what we have accomplished and bringing them around to come, play with us has just been realized.

it's not the fan mails Phoenix Suns, it's not just a call KG or a it's not always "show me the money" Miami, it's the championship that matters.

Thank you & Welcome to San Antonio, Mike Finley! http://www.smileys.ws/sm/action/00000033.gif

I cant believe that this is happening. Our Spurs team has got to be the most stacked ever in the history of the NBA. I mean which team can beat us 1-12?

1) Duncan
2) Manu
3) Parker
4) Bowen
5) Rasho
6) NVE
7) Finley
8) Nazr
9) Oberto
10) Horry
11) Udrih
12) Barry

This is like some fantasy game. Are we in a world of our own? For once, Im not worried about any injuries during the regular season. Including Timmy. If Timmy is injured, we can go small and run run run. OMFG! This is unreal.
