Pretty sure another thread was made on this, but its not a valid thread until I make it. Harden and Houston fans are pissed tbh :lol

Meh, he doesn't deserve it based on style of play, he probably isn't a top 75 player in the league anymore, but it's a meaningless game for the fans, and if they want to see Kobe starting, he should start, tbh..

Kobe is starting based on the same system which almost made Yi Jianlian start over Kevin Garnett in the East. Fans will vote for their sentimental favorites

Surely, Jim should start in this game as well, right? Of course his position is a lock seeing as there is a map out there somewhere where even Californians have voted for Jim as the better player. Hell... even ESPN admits that Jim is the better player, right? He's the defending champ and an all-time top 5 great... he gets in right? No way the most "hated and despised ball hog chucker," "teammate under the bus thrower," "coach staring down killer," "37% shooter," Kobe gets the starting nod over championship Jimmy, right?:wakeup

I don't disagree, but I guarantee you that map looks entirely different if you ask the same question 10 years from now. That question was asked sortly after the Spurs won a championship in dramatic fashion, obviously its going to be entirely red. It's even red in California. I recall ESPN asking something similar in regards to Kobe V Lebron and Duncan in 2010 and everyone was certain then that Kobe cemented his status over both stars.

Personally, I think TD has surpassed Kobe, but you have to ask the question 5-10 years after they retire.

What is even more funny is the state of California voted on LA being a better team without Kobe this year on those polls (ESPN), they shit on him in his own state and said the Lakers were better without him :lol
Popularity contest tbh.
Thats about all it is, I don't even watch that crap.

Exactly, we have to see how Lebron and TD finish their careers. Kobe is beyond done and his last few years will undo much of his great moments. Regardless, Kobe, Lebron, and TD will stand out as THE guys of their era over all the potential guys like Kevin Garnett, D-Wade, Dwight Howard, Vince Carter, Allen Iverson, etc. Guys that are also recognized but not "The guys" of their era.

I always got the impression (especially from the coaches & analysts) that Tim had the better career all along (and was the better player). Tim nearly (and should've) won the MVP in his second season and was the only player to have beat a prime Shaq twice.

I think 5 basically removed any doubts.

given the trend, it's likely TD will be a top 4 all time and kobe barely cling for the top 30, 10 years from now. I'm not joking btw.

Place your bets on the East winning it this year.

Kobe won't play much so non story it will be ceremonial and he will chuck some shots ...
West still has the better team and unless Wall or Kyrie take over I still favor a team of: Paul, Westbrook, Durant, ADavis, Harden, Lillard, Steph Curry Blake Griffin All those guys are built for the ASG ...
outside of the 2 PG's in the East I mentioned plus Lebron and STDwade I dont see much high caliber All-star game type players

Name me just 15 players better than him. I'm not a fan of Kobe other than his work ethic and fundamentals but to not have him top 15 is ludicrous! You're just a Kobe hater(as am I, I fucking hate selfish players like him) but you take it to another level. There's not a person who truly knows and appreciates basketball that doesn't have him top 15.

This is really a tough challenge, I will give it a shot

Kareem
Jordan
Magic
Bird
Russell
Duncan
Shaq
Hakeem
Lebron
Oscar Robertson
Moses Malone
Wilt

I will take these 12 over Kobe without reservations.

the next two will have a lot of back and forth though.
West
Dr. J

No, can't do it. I personally have Kobe at 13, when taking into his whole body of work, 15 is really stretching it.

People can argue for Isiah, Rick Barry, Garnett, Barkley, and such, but that is a really tough sale, even for the most ardent of Kobe haters.

I disagree dude, Kobe has cemented top 10 status whether you like it or not. The dude is a horrible human being, but the general public seems to believe hes a top 10 of all time as do most NBA superstars.

Nah, take away Shaq and Pau and he's nowhere near being in that top 10 list.

Edit : He's definitely got the skill, but his lack of team game wouldn't have gotten him there IMO if he had to play solo without a great big man.

A very interesting and truthful article written by a very credible person that knows the history of the all star game. He is also very respectful of Kobe Bryant. This is a true journalist/novelist that is enriching souls a
all over the planet with his objective intellectual articles...i dont think i would even call this an article...its more like a gift to man kind.

Should kobe start over james harden? Yes. Is Kobe still better than James Harden? Yes.

Anyone who doesn't see the AS game as an embarrassment to the game itself is an idiot. You have the same few guys who have shitty years and still top vote getters. It has nothing to do with game. Look at the market size vs the players. Only far and away guys like Davis are understandable. The rest are head scratchers.

I was saying that Kobe has/had the skill to be a top 10 player, but I don't think anyone would have considered him one if he had to go it alone solo.

His putrid team game would have derailed him IMO from getting that recognition. If he didn't have a great big man to throw it into, he just wouldn't have passed the ball. He probably would have had great numbers, but no one would consider him a top 10 player. Playing with two very, very good bigs and winning those rings are what gets him that recognition.

TD won in dominating fashion without Parker and Ginobili. Don't you remember the '99 Spurs dominating and sweeping the Lakers out of the playoffs while shutting down the forum with their suffocating defense during that playoff run?
