View Full Version : Reasons to be optimist

Individually, except Manu and TP, Spurs are fine... Boris, Split, Tim, Kawhi are having a pretty comparable season than last year in almost all possible metrics tbh Green is having a better season than LY by the same metrics. Therefore individually this core of players is playing fine.

As stated 1,0000 times already Parker sucks PER at 16,8 average of the league 15... -2,1 pts vs LY. Ortg and Drtg worst etc etc only stuff going well is shooting
Manu is on the same case or worst tbh PER at 16,6 -3,4 pts vs LY, big drop on Ortg and Drtg, shooting being worst...

From there team is getting healthy little by little... this is gonna help obviously and if individually dudes are ok there is no reason to not produce at same pace than last year.

Regarding Manu, TP, Patty back will mean less minutes for him which should lead to an improvement of his efficiency (he is playing more minutes so far this year than last year and he is 38). Parker is a mystery, best case scenario injuries / issues whatever are fucking his game up, healthier he will be back on track, worst case his decline started bad and sharp which means trouble short term and which also means the contract he just signed will hurt the Spurs on the long run... it is what it is. I'm caustiously optimistic on this point, I think he will put his shit together.

Individual performance being solid for everybody except again Manu and TP means imo there is no motivation issue, there is no aging stuff and the 21-15 is just explained by injuries and in particular Kawhi. Once Kawhi back, plane will fly again.

ps: sorry it's a bit messy but you get the point

I tend to agree.
The other small silver linning is that they are not getting trounced.

Im not mad becauce 5 happened but to be honest this team is pure evil shit they are draining Tim and Manu´s energy for nothing, 15 lost games already and counting Boris is such a fat piece of shit too much toast but that fatso is not even showing up, the whole team D is to cry for every scrub can penetrate to do a layup and then our guys cant make a layup even to save their lives, the way they blow an 18 point lead to finally lose the game and the FT% what are they? junior varsity team?
New year old team thats makes me a little sad or you guys expect every other west team to lose 30 more games so we can get the 1st seed? even an easy schedule is too much for these Spurs (excepting Tim and Manu).

Health and motivation are the biggest issues this season. Motivation is probably #1. This team just does not look hungry, or rather, focused. Spurs-ball requires laser focus. We have taken that focus for granted since the offense blossomed in the 2010-2011 season.

With a lesser focus, the team unconsciously relies on bailouts, and the Spurs' stars are just not up to the task. Tim and Manu are too old to consistently carry the team, and Parker--who had been a great carrier for the last 3 seasons--is hobbled by who knows what.

Parker will get right soon enough, but the question is whether his "right" will mean overall lower performance, and whether he can still easily re-injure himself. If TP is going to be an injury mess a la Ginobili 2008-2013, the Spurs cannot rely on TP as their consistent offensive threat and point scorer. And there is no one else on the roster who can take that role just yet.

But I count my blessings. Five was a Disney movie miracle. It could not have happened better. It cemented my favorite team as an all-time dynasty, and forever will their names be spoken with reverence. Just not on this site. :lol

Gino started the season really well, tbh... unfortunately, due to injuries to other players and having to carry the team, his minutes are on pace to be the most since the 2010-2011 season (!) and undoubtedly that has started to take a toll on his game since mid-december...

With Tony and Patty back, hopefully he can start to get some rest...

Tony ain't back tbh. He might have played yesterday but he isn't back. Spurs either need to sit him out until March or play him his regular mins/role.

This flip flopping, coming back for a game, playing 1 half BS is f'n up rotations royally.

ElNono

What gives the most optimism is that the Spurs struggled last season too when Kawhi was out (8-8, IIRC). So, there's no way to spin the fact we need him back, and once he's back, we should be in much better shape.

That's exactly my point indeed... He is playing 26 min per game but when people missing he is closer to 28-29 which is obviously too much. On top of that it's one thing to play 28 min sharing playmaking responsabilities as guard it's another to have to carry everything offensively. As a consequence his production is dropping so parker patty back is huge for him and the spurs

Updated On-Off numbers for the Spurs. Positive impact players in black. Negative impact in red. Some observations:

-Team desperately needs Kawhi back. By far, the most impactful player on the team.
-Team needs Tony to go away. His play this season has been cancerous. Misses weeks at a time. Never cheers his teammates. Sulks on the bench. Comes back and only plays one half of basketball while ruining the team chemistry. Promised 60 million over the next four years...despite having the lowest impact of all our key players. Earn your paycheck or get the fuck off the team Frenchie.
-Patty's been great so far. Provides so much energy to the bench unit and hustles on both ends of the floor.
-Splitter's defense has been bad this season. He just came back from injury so I guess we can cut him some slack. Hopefully we see some improvement in the coming weeks.
-Marco's one of the worst defenders in Spur history. His contribution on offense is negligible compared to how much he gives back on defense. Just a terrible, terrible player. It's not surprising we're struggling when we have someone so bad filling in for Leonard in the starting lineup.
- :lol at Austin Daye's numbers. How is this guy still in the NBA?

I posted about Leonard in the wrong thread but yeah we're missing the kind of superstar who's absence from his team would result in losses for everyone.

What is clear is that Leonard's D is absolutely phenomenal, including the rebounding, with how drastically the Spurs fortunes change in those departments depending on him being there or not and we're talking enough positive change that we arguably become the best team in the league, it is now very clear that Leonard should legitimately be considered a top 10 player in the league.

It should be needless to say that almost any team would start losing when they're missing that kind of elite player.

We were like a top 2 defensive team in the league! I haven't dared checking lately...

Lebron
Durant
Westbrook
Paul
Harden
Davis

then I think Leonard is already in the discussion. His impact on D is that significant:

the likes of Gasol, Curry, Leonard then Howard and maybe Cousins if he hasn't returned to bad habits. Griffin is underperforming this season.

We're missing a superstar.

Splitter DRtg is better than last year fwiw but I guess in Splitter case it does not reflect reality... that's so antiquated

Splitter's DRPM last season was 4.53, 3rd among PFs (Duncan was 2nd with 5.38 and KG was 1st with 6.6)
Splitter's DRPM so far this season is -0.05 which puts him at 65th, worse than Bonner (0.01) but better than Baynes (-0.15) and Ayres (-0.58). Top 3 are Duncan (5.45), Davis (4.15) and Ibaka (3.55).

Team by RPM (ORPM/DRPM):
Duncan = 6.00 (0.55/5.45)
Leonard = 4.61 (0.99/3.62)
Green = 2.66 (0.72/1.94)
Ginobili = 2.20 (2.21/-0.01)
Joseph = 1.04 (0.41/0.63)
Bonner = 0.36 (0.35/0.01)
Splitter = 0.19 (0.24/-0.05)
Diaw = -0.04 (-0.91/0.87)
Baynes = -0.58 (-0.43/-0.15)
Mills = -1.30 (0.19/-1.49)
Ayres = -1.40 (-0.82/-0.58)
Anderson = -2.09 (-1.83/-0.26)
Belinelli = -2.87 (0.26/-3.13)
Parker = -3.28 (-0.12/-3.16)
Daye = -3.70 (-2.67/-1.03)

That 12 point defensive swing when Matador Marco is in the game is ridiculous.

Marco's minutes this season are 666....

Yeah, and I also noticed Satan doesn't play defense. :lol

I don't take Splitter's numbers too seriously. He's missed a bunch of games and was less than 100% in many of the ones he did play. Hopefully he'll be 100% for the second half of the season.

Well, Splitter is a proven defender that has a history of elite defense, even in playoff settings..

Belinelli's on/off numbers were atrocious in last year's playoffs, and he has always rated as one of the worst defensive players in the league, tbh..nothing will change that:lol..

Biggest reason to be optimistic, Barkley says the Spurs are finished.

Aspirations for getting a high seed in the loaded West are pretty much gone. The team should just focus on getting healthy and get into a rhythm going into the playoffs. If they can get it together, I have no doubt that this team can go into Oakland, Los Angeles, Houston, Portland, wherever and take games on the road in any of these arenas...

Splitter will definitely improve. He's a bit of a pussy when it comes to recovering from injuries which is probably affecting his play right now. Once he's fully confident in his health, he'll be playing elite defense again.

There's no hope for Marco though. His numbers are considerably worse than last year. Defense has to be all-time terrible as far as Spurs wing players go and he's not giving us much on the offensive end either. His playoffs were a trainwreck last year too. If there's anybody that's a prime candidate for a trade it has to be him.

Nothing we can do about Tony except hope he grows a pair of balls. It's embarrassing to see him playing so soft right now when Tim and Manu are sacrificing their bodies every night at near 40 years old. Someone should remind him he's not being paid $60 million to give us worse production than Cory Joseph.
