Finley makes formidable Spurs even tougher (http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/story/4829072)

It's over. The Spurs have won. Late yesterday, Michael Finely announced that he has chosen to sign with San Antonio.

He turned down more money from Miami and denied recruiting pitches from Steve Nash, Amare Stoudemire, Kevin Garnett and Pat Riley.
His deal is reported to be $2.5 million the first year, but no word yet on the length of the contract.

So what does this mean for the Spurs? As is their way, the rich get richer. Already the best team in the NBA, the Spurs now add yet another perimeter weapon to go along with Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, Brent Barry and newly signed Nick Van Exel. It really doesn't seem fair does it? And with Tim Duncan, the Spurs have to be the clear favorite to repeat as champs.

So who's the biggest loser from the Finely-Spurs signing? The Suns. With no Joe Johnson, and now no Finley, they don't have that killer shooting guard in the mix.

They have Jimmy Jackson, but he's best suited to come off the bench. After that, they're left with guys like Raja Bell, who will probably have to start now.

With little fanfare, the Rockets signed Yao Ming to a three-year extension to keep him in Houston until at least 2010-2011. Now Yao, as good as he's been, needs to step it up.

For the Rockets to be real players in the West, and to seriously challenge the dominance of the Spurs, Yao needs to be great. We've heard that he's added upper body strength this offseason, but we're eager to see him come opening night.

For the second day in a row, Dennis Rodman makes it to Smack. His agent, Darren Price, has been all over the place making noise for The Worm. Price was quoted in yesterday's Cleveland Plain-Dealer claiming that last season, Rodman thought he was going to get some type of contract offer from the Cavs, but it obviously never came.

Much, much respect to NBA stars doing their part to help out victims of Katrina. Baron Davis is donating $50,000 to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Effort and Shaq flew to Baton Rouge to spend the week doing whatever he can do to help out.

We heard that the Raptors are reportedly close to waiving Lamond Murray and that the Nets will look to pick him up.

Did you see the stare-off between Nationals manager Frank Robinson and the home plate umpire last night? Absolutely amazing. After Frank was displeased with a call to end the inning, he and the ump stared each other down for 44 seconds. The ump was the first one to give, looking away in disgust.

We're out like everyone but the Spurs.
