View Full Version : Why are men so hard to shop for? I need ideas.

My dad's birthday was Monday, and he's coming in town tonight to stay with me - and besides taking him to dinner, I need to get him some kind of birthday present. I've been wracking my brain for weeks trying to think of something other than a shirt or tie, but it's difficult. For Christmas I got him picture frames made for some of his album covers for his home office (he's a big music fanatic), and before that I've gotten him concert DVDs (although the man has bookstore credit and has now gotten all the DVDs he wants already).

Anyways, I think I'm out of ideas for birthday presents for a 50-something male - anyone else have any?

uhhhh........
my father in-law is always happy with a few nice big briskets suddenly makign an appearence in his deep freeze. .... and 1 time we went in with the other kids/wives and bought him a new pit. I thought he would die from happiness.....

but other than that I'm stumped.

How about finding him a vintage record or something that will remind him of why he loves music in the first place. I think everybody that loves music can think to one certain album, or in my case cassette, that turned them into fanatics.

He also plays basketball and tennis quite a bit - and I've used up band memorabilia I think ... I've done a lot of that in the past. He doesn't really have any favorite teams - he's from Houston, but pretty apathetic about the Rockets. He's a big Longhorn fan, but he's already got every imaginable UT memorabilia already that he'd actually use.

1. Men are easy to shop for, and
2. Men over 21 don't give a shit about their birthday.

I hate shopping for my dad...he doesn't give any clues at all. And when I think I am getting him something cool and that he'll use alot, he doesn't ever get excited! It's so damn fustrating!

I'd suggest something music related, but like you said you've pretty much covered that...maybe a book? You could always turn him into a fellow Harry Potter Nerd ;)

Okay, that would work if he didn't still have his old turntable and a closet full of vinyl. And he's already got all of the vinyl on CD so he can listen to it in the car or on a plane.

Get him a Best Buy gift card and take him there to get what he wants and have lunch together. Men really don't care what they get compared to women.

My dad used to like snacks....so I'd make him a huge basket of goodies, things that he liked. He loved getting those....

I usually find out what's my dad is currently reading from my stepmom, and if he likes the book. If he does, I buy him something else from the same author. If he doesn't like the author, I offer to pay for half of whatever my sister is buying him.

Depends on how much you want to spend.
Shaving is monotous so it's nice to have a qualilty shaver. One of those Braun self-cleaning electric shavers is what I'd like. Over a hundred bucks.

Thanks for all the suggestions - I ended up finding him a bootleg of a 1976 Dan Fogelberg concert (9/10 quality) that Joe Walsh and Don Henley are guest performers on. Hopefully he'll like it. :spin
