View Full Version : What Western Conference seed do you think the Spurs will be by the all-star break?

Glanced at the schedule of the WC teams in front of the Spurs and there are some tough games ahead for those teams and some head-to-head matchups. With Kawhi back, and a favorable schedule, I think the Spurs can get to the 3 or 4 seed by the all-star break. What do you think?

Top 5 for sure....

I think the Clip show will fall behind us, then Houston and Dallas will both move toward us and we will probably fall between them at the 5 or 4 spot

5th or 6th. I think the spurs could make it to the two or three seed by the end of the regular season, but, by my estimates, they'll need to go 31 and 9 the rest of the way. Doable, but not much room for error.

31-9 the rest of the way would be crazy! I would love to see that. I agree not much room for error.

Just stay between 5th and 8th to avoid OKC in the first round is the best option.

You guys are overrating how the Spurs need to get this and that record to get this and that seed. Teams will fall into place, averages will come to overachievers etc2

Also.... some of the teams ahead of us are overdue for injury. Some of those teams ahead of us will be upset in the first round by OKC/PHX. Im really not worried. Just doin my best to cheer for Atlanta to come out of the East so we can secure the seis.

I say they will be a 3 way tie for 4th seed by allstar break. buckle up

Kind of depends on how the teams in front of them do. I expect Spurs to win, but if the others do as well, then obviously Spurs can't move up.

If Portland loses in Phoenix tonight, they'll fall to 12 losses.

If that happens, everyone from 2 to 7 in the West will have between 12 and 16 losses; overcoming a deficit of 4 games over half a season is not unrealistic and that would put the Spurs in play to win the division.

Certainly makes one wish that they had closed the 3OT games when they had the chance and that they hadn't frittered away the games at Utah and at home against the Lakers.

currently being 2 games away from 5th, 3 from 4th, and 3 1/2 from 3rd seat. I say we end up with the 3rd seat by all-star break. On a side note, we are number 2 according to fivethirtyeight.com

They should really be 2 or 3. They need to take care of business on this home stand. Beating the Bulls tonight would be nice too.

I'll guess 4th or 5th, but at the All Star break the 2 thru 6 or so will probably be so bunched up that it might not mean too much. If they stay healthy, they should be in position for a legitimate run at #2 in the second half, and an outside shot at #1 if Golden State experiences any missed games from Curry & co.

Here's a chart showing the West current playoff teams' games before the all-star break.
Next to Golden State (definitely not catching them), the Spurs have the easiest schedule before the break.

Like I mentioned in the OP, there's quite a few head-to-head matchups for teams in front of us in the standings. With their playoff-team heavy schedule, Phoenix is going to be replaced by OKC before the break. Clippers have a brutal road schedule (8 games in a row) with numerous playoff teams. Dallas and Houston both face 7 playoff teams including 5 matchups each against the West playoff teams. Although Memphis doesn't have to play as many current playoff teams, they have to face OKC twice. Portland also faces 8 playoff teams with 6 of them on the road. I really do think the Spurs can get to 3rd or 4th in the West by the all-star break.

Dallas will be tested. Spurs should catch them

OKC has 3 games with West playoff teams and 1 away at CLE so yeah they catch Phoenix

I'll go ahead and say 4th or 5th seed then. I guess the December from hell was a blessing in disguise. Now it's time for the other 'contenders' to get their shit pushed in and see if they can stay afloat like the Spurs did. HAH!!

I bet the Spurs end at 3 or 4 by season's end.

Updated chart. I think the Spurs will win out before the all-star break. Golden State and Memphis are locked in at 1 and 2. Things will have to fall just right for the Spurs to get to the 3rd seed. They will probably end up tied for 4th or 5th. Portland, since they are leading their division, can fall no further than 4th.

That Clippers schedule is :wow, and Houston should lose at least 3 games..Spurs' only potential loss is @ Toronto IMO..

Chart update. No seeding changes since the last update, but things are starting to bunch up from 3 to 7. Looks like the Spurs are going to end up at 5. The Clips and Mavs will at least lose 1 or 2 of their remaining games before the break. The Spurs, I believe, will win out. Not an easy task especially on the road, but I think they'll do it. Golden State and Memphis are still locked in at 1 and 2. The Spurs can't pass Portland or Houston even if either of them lost all their games. Portland can't fall further than 4th since they lead their division. If they end up in a tie with Houston, the seeding tie breaker favors Houston. (split head-to-head, but Houston has a better Division record)

However it plays out, everyone 3 to 7 will be in striking distance. Even Memphis could lose two of their next three moving them closer to the pack. Should be fun race to the finish!

At best, the Spurs could end up as the 4 seed by the all-star break. More likely, though, they'll end up 5th. Hopefully they can take care of business against a cupcake schedule. Now that they're fully healthy for the first time all season, the Rodeo Road Trip is the perfect time for them to hit their stride.

With Blake out 4-6 weeks, this is an opportune time to move out of the seventh seed and not be worse than the Clippers and whoever is at eighth...assuming the Clippers continue to drop games. Gotta be like sharks who smell blood in the water and seize this opportunity.

With Griffin out 4-6 weeks, we'll almost certainly pass LAC...hopefully today, assuming we can beat Toronto.

I think we'll end up 6th going into the break, but we'll be within a game of 4th.

Final chart update. I thought the Spurs would move up to at least to 4 before the break. To get there I thought they could lose 2 at the most, and one of those two couldn't be against the Clippers. They of course lost 3, with one of those being the Clips. :( As others have pointed out, they just aren't playing consistent enough.

The good thing is Spurs (7), Clips (6) and Mavs (5) are tied in the loss column and the Rockets (4) and Blazers (3) are only two game ahead in the loss column. I don't think anyone's catching the Warriors (1). The Grizzlies (2) with 14 losses aren't too far ahead and could possibly be caught by the rest of the field.

The other good news, for those who were worried about the Spurs even making the playoffs, is the gap between 7 and 8 has widened to 6 games in the loss column. With OKC (9) positioned to overtake the Suns (8) soon. It will be great to see the Warriors/OKC in the first round.

Oh well...enjoy the All-star break. Not a big fan of the game, but it will nice to see TD take some final bows and I will definitely be tuned into the three point shootout. Go Marco!

Btw...out of the break the first two Spurs games are nationally televised back-to-back games against Clips (Feb 19 TNT) and Warriors (Feb 20 ESPN). Should be a fun stretch run!
