Been into pro rasslin' all my life, and there was a time I thought it was legit. I was around 13 when I found out it wasn't.

Saw a match from Fresno*** on their BIG TIME WRESTLING show on Wednesday. That Friday the family went to Modesto to visit some realitives. So it's Friday Night BIG TIME WRESTLING from Sacramento, there it was....again.. hold for hold blow for blow...indentical.

First off everything is done with the left hand, that way they don't mess up. Second off it's up to the guy getting clobbered to "sell" it. No they are not really being hit other that open hand slaps like we see from Sheamus. Ever notice nobody ever swells up from a punch? It is all as fake as it can get.

But...it does take an athlete to pull it off and it is rough and these guys do get seriously hurt. But don't kid yourself into thinking anything about it isn't done as carefully as possible because it is. Nothing real about it.

The politics involved, the behind the scenes goings on, who gets a push and why, who doesn't and why is what interests me now at this stage of the game.

:lol I understand that there are numerous situations in which wrestlers exaggerate contact, that's pretty obvious. My argument is that overall though these guys take a beating. I'm pretty sure the times in which they were actually taking real punishment significantly outweigh the times which they exaggerated how hard they were hit, especially when you realize these people wrestle for years. I haven't watched wrestling consistently since about 2002 (I was about 11) but I tune in from time to time because wrestling was fun for me as a kid. I'm much more concerned with basketball and to a lesser extent, the UFC, than I am with the WWE at this point of my life. But it still amazes me in a sport where numerous people have suffered concussions, brain damage, and other serious life-changing and life-threatening injuries people still shrug it off and say "It's fake fighting".

Avante

Those who don't know....

Pro wrestling has its roots in the old carny challenges where a carnival wrestler would challenge local toughs to last for a set time period. Most of the time the challenger would be a plant who split the money with the wrestler. However, sometimes it became real and the carny would have to "shoot" or "hook" his opponent.
That said, pro wrestling started out as legit. It also started out long and, to large extent, boring with rest holds being the standard fare. Matches were two out of three falls and also lasted for hours. I believe Frank Gotch vs George Hackenschmidt lasted between three to five hours. In the 1930s, the Golddust Trio formed and that all changed. The Trio (which was composed of promoter Toots Mondt, legendary shooter Ed "Strangler" Lewis, and someone whos name escapes me at the moment) took wrestling back to its carny roots by scripting the outcome of the matches on their shows. Lewis was billed as their champion simply because no one (with the exception of Farmer Burns) could beat him unless he let them. The champion periodically lost the belt to keep the fans interested, but needed to be a legit badass to prevent promoters and opponents from screwing him over. When the NWA formed, Lewis's handpicked successor Lou Thesz became the World Champion for the same reason.
So, to answer your question, pro wrestling started out scripted in the 19th century, became legit in the early 20th century, and returned to its scripted roots within 30 years.

What is your definition of "Fake Fighting"?

That would be when when both combatants are well aware of how important it is that neither hurts the other one because they need the work/$$$$. So both guys do all they can to give the impressive of real fighting when in reality everything is done without any actual violence involved.

The last thing a rassler wants to do is be the reason a co worker is out of work.

A guy who works stiff....meaning he's not good at pulling things....is very very unpopular in the biz and nobody wants to work with him. Big Van Vadar had that rep. Ryback has that rep.

I guess we're going to have to agree to disagree here. We all know wrestling is scripted and guys often exaggerate contact, but those guys face real pain in that ring. For that reason I don't see it as "fake fighting".

All these guys travel and pretty much live together. Like all businesses we have the good workers and the bad ones. In the rasslin' biz those with mic skills leap over those without them, usually those workers get a manager to talk for them. The last thing anyone wants to do is lay somebody up for awhile, they do all they can do to play it as safe as possible. Nobody wants to cost his co worker $$$$$$$. You hurt a couple guys and your job is on the line.

I guess we're going to have to agree to disagree here. We all know wrestling is scripted and guys often exaggerate contact, but those guys face real pain in that ring. For that reason I don't see it as "fake fighting".
Only rednecks believe that shit. Even back when there was blood (gee where did that go?) it was because wrestlers would carry a small sliver of razor blade in their trunks, wrapped in tape to set a depth gauge, and then cut their own forehead. The forehead bleeds like crazy. it's why the blood was always from the forehead. I've been a a few fights, never saw a guy bleed from a small cut in the forehead from a punch.

In fact, let me hit one of them in the face with a chair, I bet they don't make the next event.

They take aspirin to thin the blood too..Eddie Guerrero could have died with the amount of blood he lost after aspirin and a blade job that was a little too deep.

Most the rasslers have had a long line of injuries, and there is no doubt the "sport" is very rough. But.....there is also no doubt these guys do all they can to not hurt each other. Obviously only so much can be done.

There is no....real fighting...ever done in the major companies, sure in the rinky dinky organizations held in gyms that hold 200 people we might see a couple guys get pissed. But it's rare.

You obviously don't differentiate between fighting and choreographed stunts. Fighting means two people trying to beat each other in some form of combat. What they are doing is scripted falling, running and jumping, fake blows, fake "pain" and "stunned" moments, etc... Notice in MMA you never seen anyone take someone off the top of the cage after stunning them for 20 seconds. Notice also in MMA when someone gets hit in the face, they bleed like a stuck pig. There's never even a black eye in wrestling (black guys notwithstanding of course).

I cannot believe you're still arguing this shit. Are you really this fucking stupid?

I understand that there are numerous situations in which wrestlers exaggerate contact, that's pretty obvious. My argument is that overall though these guys take a beating. I'm pretty sure the times in which they were actually taking real punishment significantly outweigh the times which they exaggerated how hard they were hit, especially when you realize these people wrestle for years. It still amazes me in a sport where numerous people have suffered concussions, brain damage, and other serious life-changing and life-threatening injuries people still shrug it off and say "It's fake fighting".

Most these guys went to schools and spent a couple years in the rinky dinky side of things working on their skills. If they show some talent/mic skills and the WWE thinks they might draw a little $$$$$ here they come.

The...HUGE...difference in as bar fight and why a pro rassler would kick ass....cardio conditioning. Bar toughs have no cardio, in two minutes they're done. A pro rassler can work a good hour if need be.

Lived right across the street from a SCW training facility owned by Joe Blanchard. Really the only training facility in San Antonio, until it mysteriously burned to the ground. Rumours in my neighborhood said someone saw a masked man running from the scene, a Luchador mask. True story tbh I got to meet Big Bubba who turned out to be Fred Ottman aka Tugboat aka Shockmaster :lol They would routinely get ice cream from the neighborhood ice cream man which parked conveniently across the street from my house.

Amazing cardio, not quite on par with a professional boxer, but probably close. Roddy Piper said he ran 5 miles a day 5 times a week just to get ready for his Wrestlemania boxing match with Mr. T.

I've talked about how rough the "sport" is, it's very rough and guys get hurt all the time. But, it's not real and we all know that.

So just because you didn't intend to hurt someone it makes it "fake" if you actually do hurt them? So it's all about intent to you? For example, you had sex with underage girls while you were overseas, you've made it clear that you didn't intend to do so and you weren't aware that these girls were underage at the time. However, just because it wasn't your intention to commit statutory rape, it doesn't make your actions "fake". You are a real rapist and pedophile.

Then there's always reality.

We start with what was ...underage. The legal age of consent over there was ridiculous, it was something like 14. But...in order to work inside the bars a girl had to have a work permit. She had to be 18 to qualify for one.

Now add the action which is second to none when it comes to team work. If these guys don't make it work somebody can get seriously hurt and they do this every night of the week. That amazes me.
