We are screwed at DT.

Best bet is to hope we can get a Juco along with a big time player

I read somewhere that UT wants to eventually play a base 335 defense. Not sure if they have the ends or lb's for it, but it would take some of the depth issues off of dt.

HORNSDIGEST: NFL opinions vary on the draft stock of Texas DT Hassan Ridgeway, who will forego his final year of eligibility to enter the 2016 NFL Draft. But the 6-4, 315-pound redshirt junior from Mansfield is probably more ready than most realize.
When I heard junior defensive tackle Hassan Ridgeway, who finished the 2015 season with 36 tackles, including 3.5 sacks, had informed Texas coaches he plans to forego his final year of eligibility and enter the NFL Draft, my first thought was "mistake."
But then I connected with someone I trust in the NFL who said Ridgeway could end up a first-round pick "maybe second round if he performs poorly."

One NFL front office person texted me back and said they see Ridgeway going in the "third or fourth round - not in the same class as (DT) Malcom Brown. Might go higher, but he isn't special, in my opinion."
It seemed like Ridgeway really could have used one more good, solid season to show the NFL he could be a player worthy of a starting spot in the league. But at 6-4 and 315 pounds with his ability to take over, at times, seemingly when he set his mind to it, the NFL appears to think Ridgeway is ready, too.
Even if Ridgeway is selected in the third or fourth round, the money is legit.
Former Texas LB Jordan Hicks was taken by the Eagles in the third round last year and ended up with a four-year, $3 million deal with $652,732 fully guaranteed. That averages out to $748,000 per year.
If Ridgeway gets into the first round, cha ching.
Former Longhorns' DT Malcom Brown (6-2, 320) went 30th in the first round to the Patriots in the 2015 draft and signed a four-year, $7.6 million deal with $6.1 million fully guaranteed - an average of $1.9 million per year.
Ridgeway only started 18 games in college, and half of the eight games he started in 2015 appeared to involve Ridgeway playing with injury (ankle, shoulder and a lower back injury to start the season - we were told from a car accident over the summer that severely limited his ability to get in shape).
But when he was healthy, like in his first start against Oklahoma State in Game 4, when he returned a fumble 34 yards for a TD, he showed he could be dominant.
In texting with a few NFL scouts, they'd like to have seen more of his ability to use his hands to get off blocks and split double teams to be a high-level three-technique in the league. Otherwise, he'll likely get slotted as a nose tackle "only" by some teams, which carries less value in the NFL.
But it only takes one team to like you in the first round, and all the scouts said Ridgeway's size plays in his favor as a potential first-round draft pick. Malcom Brown had to "overcome" his size as a 6-foot-2 defensive tackle.
Ridgeway, who redshirted as a freshman in 2012 under Mack Brown, was dubbed "Green Mile" in 2014 by Charlie Strong because Ridgeway initially came off as more of a gentle giant.
But Ridgeway began coming to life in 2014 under Strong and D-line coach Chris Rumph, posting 43 tackles, including six sacks and 11 tackles for loss. In 2015, Ridgeway was a preseason All-Big 12 candidate. But a lower back injury caused him to get off to a slow start.
Ridgeway didn't start the first three games of the 2015 season. But in his first start of 2015 against Oklahoma State, Ridgeway posted a sack and returned that fumble 34 yards for a touchdown.
In a 24-17 win over Oklahoma, Ridgeway posted his second sack of the season. Ridgeway posted a sack against Iowa State and a half sack against Texas Tech, a game in which he suffered an ankle injury that caused him to miss the final game of the season against Baylor.
The projected starters at defensive tackle for Texas in 2016 figure to be Poona Ford and Paul Boyette with Chris Nelson also vying for playing time and Alex Norman possibly coming back from a medical redshirt season.

This may seem far fetched on some recruits but if I'm Texas I circle the wagons on Jordan E. and Kendell Jones and a couple the others targets who threw us on the backburner and make sure you emphasize our lack of depth. The road to playing time can't get any easier than what we're currently faced with.

Vito Corleone

Our best bet for Jones is if Bama DT coach takes the DC spot at South Carolina.

It's worth it for our coaches to stay in touch with him, but I highly doubt he ends up a quality DT, he would be devastating as an Olinemen.

Yeah. His last three follows went to @ CougarState, @ TomHolmoe (BYU's AD) and @BYUCougars (BYU athletic's official Twitter account). He follows four Arizona State accounts as well, and he interviewed there a few weeks ago. BYU and Norvell is something to keep an eye on, good catch Floss!

Delance delves into decision week
Ryan Bartow - 113 seconds ago VIP0
Newsletter

ORLANDO, Fla. - Offensive tackle Jean Delance (North Mesquite, Tex.) still plans to announce his college choice Saturday at the Under Armour All-American Game.

Michigan, LSU and Texas are the finalists.

The Crystal Ball reads 50-percent for Texas, 20-percent for Texas A&M, 15-percent for Michigan, 10-percent for Oklahoma and five-percent for Alabama.

Delance still plans to make his final choice New Year's Eve night when he meets with his mother and grandmother in their hotel room on the day they arrive in Florida.

"That's the main goal," Delance said. "To see how I'm feeling from there. She's going to put all her pebbles on the table and I'm going put all of them. We are going to duke it out and see what's best for me."

Delance shared his latest thoughts on his finalists heading into his choice.

LSU: "(Tigers offensive line) coach (Jeff) Grimes need help at the offensive tackle position. He said there's an immediate chance to come in and start at that left tackle spot."

Michigan: "Coach (Jim) Harbaugh. They treat me like family. They already have that No. 1 class. They have that set up. It's what they are going to need. They're still three or four four-star guys on the board that they are going to get that I know of. So I mean I just trust it's going to be a No. 1 class and they are going to be back on top next year (and be a) playoff team."

Texas: "Coach (Charlie) Strong, we have a good relationship. My mom likes him. It's not too far from home. At the end of the day you still have to do what's best for me. I have a great relationship the whole staff. You have to foresee it at UT. That's all I have to say. I talk to (Malik Jefferson) all the time especially since he's on break. We just hang out and chill. We have a great relationship."

What will he base his decision on?

"Distance is not a matter. It's playing time. Family-oriented environment and a great relationship (for that staff) with my mom and grandma," Delance said.

The four-star recruit is ranked as the nation's No. 10 offensive tackle and the No. 15 prospect in Texas in the 2016 class by 247Sports.com Composite Rankings.

His last quote, regarding a package deal with Dontavious Jackson, is interesting: "Oh no. In fact we added a couple people. But we'll keep that hush hush because some are commiting this weekend".

Who's committing this weekend that are considering his/Jacksons final options? Delance has Texas, Michigan and LSU as his finalists. Cuffee has Texas, A&M, TCU and Oklahoma as his finalists. Whaley has Texas, Arkansas and Georgia as his finalists.

update on DT Stephon Taylor from TFB

– Stephon Taylor: There is a lot of concern about the defensive tackle position and with Ridgeway leaving it becomes that much more important to bring in some potential instant impact DTs. One of the guys that doesn’t get talked about much is Stephon Taylor (New Orleans, LA). Taylor has already (unofficially) visited Texas and has a strong relationship with coach Haley.

I came across some excellent news for the Longhorn faithful yesterday. I spoke to a source close to Taylor last night and was told that Taylor will take an official visit to Texas in January. He also has a trip planned to South Carolina. I was also told in no uncertain terms that Texas is his current leader.

Definitely. 24/7 has him as a 4-star (250th nationally), so for them it would be a jump of more than 200 spots. The other two guys Simmons mentions are DE Amani Bledsoe (471st nationally) and OT Robert Kraeling (221st nationally). All three guys that would have to make a HUGE jump. Relevant top Semper Fi bowl Day 1 performers, from national 247:

1. Andrew Fitzgerald: The Texas commit was a close second to Bledsoe on the defensive line. He dominated 1-on-1 drills, running around opposing lineman and even once running through one. He's set to play defensive end for the Longhorns, but the coaches have said he could eventually move inside to tackle. He has the frame to add good weight before he gets to Austin.

3. Marcel Southall: The 6-foot-3, 270-pound defensive tackle was a handful for the West guards and centers all day. He plays with great leverage and showed today why many of the top programs in the South and Southwest are going after him.

4. Isaiah Champbers: The 6-foot-4, 258-pound TCU commit was very good at his defensive end spot. He used a variety of moves to beat linemen in 1-on-1 drills and continued his strong play into full-team sets. He was specifically impressive in his awareness of finding the ball carrier and slowing down the run.

Finally, Texas commit Denzel Okafor had a solid day and looks the part at 6-foot-4, 295 pounds. He is likely going to slide inside to guard for Charlie Strong, and he looked very good at that spot today.

EJ Nightly Notes

Here are Wednesday's notes on Texas targets:

— I spoke to a source that said an influential family member playing a key role in the decision process does not want Cibolo Steele defensive end Mark Jackson to end up at Texas A&M, where he is currently committed. The four-star prospect will officially visit Oklahoma and Texas next month.

— A source well connected in Louisiana said he does in fact have reason to believe that Texas leads for McDonogh 35 (La.) defensive tackle Stephon Taylor. The four-star prospect has always had Texas in his Top 3, but moving up to the leader is huge. Taylor would be an important land at a position of need.

— According to 247Sports’ Alex Gleitman, Duncanville defensive tackle Marcel Southall will make official visits to Oklahoma State, Miami, and Ole Miss next month. Southall would then have one official visit remaining, meaning he could see Texas, but it would have to be during the week. Right now, Southall appears to be a long shot.

— As mentioned on the board, St. Augustine (La.) defensive tackle D’Andre Christmas-Giles is naming his top schools tomorrow. Texas, which hosted Christmas-Giles for an official visit this month, is a lock to make it. LSU and TCU are also high on his mind.

— George Ranch running back Darius Anderson picked up new offers from Alabama, TCU and Texas A&M. Anderson holds an offer from the Longhorns but hasn’t been in much contact with the staff.

RB Devwah Whaley (http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-Devwah-Whaley-155518)
Schools: Arkansas, Texas, Georgia
Analysis: Whaley was once committed to Georgia and really loves the way the SEC produces backs, so despite some rumors he will stay home and play for Texas, I think he’s excited about the opportunity that presents itself at Arkansas. He pays great attention to the offensive scheme of teams and the Hawgs love to run the ball a ton, something he lists as a key to his decision.
Prediction: Arkansas

OL Jean Delance (http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-Jean-Delance-167600)
Schools: Texas, Michigan, LSU, Alabama
Analysis: Delance, a former Oklahoma commit, has been up and down this week at Under Armour but he has good size and arm extension and is a raw prospect with a lot of size. He’s also a four-star that Texas needs to keep home, which makes me believe he’s been made a priority by the Longhorns and will choose them over Michigan.
Prediction: Texas

More praise for Andrew Fitzgerald:

Greg Biggins says: "Probably the best overall player for the second day in a row was Andrew Fitzgerald. The Texas commit was unblockable. They were holding him, choke hold, grabbing, and doing everything they could in 1-on-1s and the team drills. He's too big, too strong, and he has a real good work ethic. The guy is going to be a stud. He can go inside, outside. He doesn't know how good he's going to be yet."

I think ESPN tried to fit him in yesterday, but when he was originally told no by them, he made a deal with Bleacher Report. He is going to make one of those commitment videos that BR has been putting out this fall for recruits. It's probably going to be made this coming week.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: Fun times. Well let’s go back to the Austin side of the ledger and discuss what’s going on with recruiting.

Big Cigar: After talking to folks who would know, they’re confident Texas will land Devwah Whaley. His parents and everyone close to him want him at Texas. If the staff would just make it a priority, he would be a Horn by now I’m told by everyone in his circle. He’s got an illness in his family that makes Fayetteville an afterthought, but again, the Horns win if they make an early effort. On Zach Shackelford, they think he’ll be a Horn too. Last year, Tim Irvin had his bags packed and was headed to Austin after checking out Auburn, and we know how that went down. Shack isn’t a lock but the staff feels good. Mattox made Shack a priority after his hiring so that’s a good sign I’m told.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: What else is going on?

Big Cigar: Speaking of Mattox, Patrick Hudson will be the first stop of the new Texas OL coach after the dead period. LOL, did we hire Patrick Suddes or Eric Nahlin ? Unofficially or officially for the recruitniks, there’s a real chance and the sister isn’t a big hurdle, though the thought is that they will attend the same school. At the end of the day, the staff is very confident Hudson will at least officially visit. On Lil' Jordan Humphrey, they love him a lot more than recruitniks. They like his size and skillset as a WR but it’s not set in stone. This one looks like Texas all the way.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: What about some other prospects that we’re considering as we head down the stretch?

Big Cigar: I’m told Quartney Davis has an outside shot at getting an offer. Jake Spavital getting fired will almost assuredly net us the tight end Irvin Smith and they’re mostly confident one of Stephon Taylor or Christmas-Giles becoming a Horn. Taylor is probably more likely if you’re scoring at home. One interesting note is that Chris Daniels is likely to be commit even if he was a late offer. That’s the word around the campfire anyway. Strong and Daniel’s dad are from the same part of Arkansas and the staff knows they have messed the recruitment up due to miscalculations of athleticism. They definitely like his athleticism as a tackle. They’ll try one more time to flip him and roll the dice.

As for Madubuike, they feel better him as opposed to his public indications. Call it splitting aces at an Indian casino. Texas has an 18 versus showing 8 when it comes to Mark Jackson on a blackjack table.

In bigger and better news, they still feel good about Dontavious Jackson and Jeffrey McCulloch. They’re not as concerned about Jackson especially if they can sell him that Malik Jefferson isn’t a Mike linebacker. Umm, Charlie make the call. The staff like its chances with Erick Fowler or any player that visits. Coach Strong says and preaches, just get the kids to campus and I’ll do the rest.

Finally, Deontay Anderson is viewed as an Ole Miss commit in the waiting. The staff also still feels really good about Brandon Jones here, but there is some concern with TAMU. If Traylor stays, we’ll get Jones is what I’m told. Eric Cuffee is done as everybody knows but he’ll wallow in their suckage. Chris Brown is done unless he has a visit or two. We think he wants an excuse to come to Texas and hopefully someone gives him that.

Erick Fowler update from 24/7:

After catching up with a couple people around the recruitment of Manor linebacker Erick Fowler the last few days, I can say it’s going to be an interesting month to follow the four-star LSU commit. It’s well known that Fowler is a huge LSU fan. He grew up rooting for the Tigers, and he hasn’t wavered much in his desire to head to the Bayou State. “I’m not just looking at LSU because they’re my favorite school,” Fowler said. “I’m definitely going through listing the things I like and don’t like about LSU. I haven’t really found anything I don’t like so far.”

But, at the same time, there is plenty pulling him toward Texas. A Manor resident, Fowler grew up in a town that’s 15 miles from Darrell K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium and the fandom in his home city reflects that. Fowlers family – mom, dad and grandparents – are all Texas fans, and they want Fowler to stay close to home. Even Texas commits, such as his friend Sam Ehlinger, are pushing for Fowler to stay in Austin. In addition to that, the eventual position Fowler plays is a major consideration. Fowler wants to stand up and rush the passer from the edge. Texas will give him that opportunity recruiting him at a “Fox” end. Currently, that’s not yet a guarantee at LSU with new defensive coordinator Dave Aranda just arriving in Baton Rouge. Fowler likes what he’s seen so far from Aranda’s tape, but the two have yet to talk.

So, yes, Fowler has a lot to think about. And despite his list about LSU, I continue to hear it’s close to 50-50 on whether Fowler ends up at LSU. In fact, I heard rumblings an announcement (details weren't clear of what form) could come from this week, but ultimately he’s decided to wait on a final decision until signing day. It’s a tough choice for Fowler, and one that will be interesting to follow over the next month. (Hummer)

Please convince him to switch......Please......I do not know if any of you got to see Judson play the last two years, but this kid lived in the backfield. If you were at the games, #9 was consistently beating his man off the line, sometimes double teams. He was also held more, even though the refs never threw the flag, than any HS DE I have ever seen. Listening on the radio, all game long, you hear his name for a sack, tackle for loss, QB hurry, pass deflection, etc.

Now, he does need to hit the weight room, as he is slender, but he should be able to add some good muscle to that frame. One thing, he does get some stupid unsportsmanlike penalties.........but IMO, many of those stem from the fact that he is being held play after play and the refs won't make a call, so he gets frustrated.

I would love to steal Robinson and that Steele kid from A&M

WHAT’S REALLY GOING ON AT TEXAS A&M?
Some of you have wondered why I have been reporting on developments at Texas A&M recently, and I have some source relationships connected to TAMU System chancellor John Sharp and former Gov. Rick Perry from when I covered them as statewide office holders as a news reporter for The Associated Press in Austin (1992-98).

A little more background before we get into whether Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin ever wanted QB Kyler Murray or was forced to take the legacy of A&M record-setting QB Kevin Murray by A&M strong arms so Kyler wouldn’t go to Texas.

Perry and Sharp were roommates at Texas A&M.

Both obviously went on to win election to statewide office – Sharp as comptroller and Perry as the longest-tenured governor in state history.

In 2011, Perry-controlled regents at A&M appointed Sharp as chancellor of the 19-member TAMU System.

And pretty much ever since, Sharp, an incredibly savvy and power-hungry politician, has been orchestrating maneuvers to make sure he is the most feared and listened-to leader connected to the A&M campus in College Station (even though Sharp oversees all 19 members of the A&M System).

When A&M celebrated the re-opening of Kyle Field after a $450 million renovation (that I’m told actually cost $520 million because of $70 million in overruns), it was Sharp front-and-center kicking off the festivities.

Not A&M president Michael Young or then-athletic director Eric Hyman.

Sharp.

To friends, Sharp referred to the renovated Kyle Field as “The House That Johnny Built” – as in Johnny Sharp.

But paying for The House That Johnny Built is going to be a different story. The $450 million price tag (and $70 million in cost overruns) is being financed by student fees, ticket sales, suite revenue, A&M’s SEC TV revenue, pledges to the 12th Man Foundation and $25 million from Bryan-College Station.
The biggest problem facing A&M as it pays off roughly $350 million bonded to the university is that most of the pledges made to help finance a big chunk of the renovation costs were made back when oil was between $80 and $107 a barrel.

Oil is now hovering around $35 a barrel.

“When did things get desperate?” one high-powered A&M source said to me. “When the price of oil went below $50 a barrel.”

Whether he was carried away with his power or overly concerned about keeping interest high in A&M football, Sharp started to micromanage Kevin Sumlin and the football program, starting a year ago at this time, sources told HD.

According to those sources, Sumlin wasn’t concerned about Kyler Murray’s flickering allegiance to A&M and growing interest in committing to the University of Texas. Why? Because Sumlin and OC Jake Spavital were excited about the future of 5-star QB Kyle Allen.

Kevin Murray wasn’t crazy about Sumlin (based on a tweet he made about A&M’s lack of defense during the 2014 season) and probably preferred Texas’ Charlie Strong.

But A&M’s strong arms – led by Sharp – weren’t OK with the idea of Kyler Murray ending up at Texas, the sources said.

The sources said Sumlin was forced to make promises of playing time to the Murray family. Ultimately, those promises and Kyler’s mother saying, “I didn’t name you ‘Kyler,’ after ‘Kyle Field’ for nothing,” helped sway Kyler Murray to sign with the Aggies.

The season – and perhaps the funding of The House That Johnny Built - turned in a home game against Alabama.

That’s when Kyle Allen threw three pick-sixes and was ultimately replaced by Kyler Murray. After Murray threw one interception (not returned for a TD), Murray was replaced by Allen. Murray was irate. Let Spavital have it, and then Murray was benched for the next game against Mississippi.

But the sources said Sharp was blowing up the phones of Sumlin and Spavital starting in the middle of the Alabama game to get Kyler Murray more involved. So when Murray was benched for the Ole Miss game – a 23-3 loss - and the following week, the A&M strong arms told Sumlin to start Murray against South Carolina the following week.

A&M won. Murray started again against Auburn (a loss) and again against Western Carolina (a win).

Kyle Allen, who didn’t play at all against South Carolina or Auburn, then started the last two games of the season against Vanderbilt and LSU as Murray failed to play a single snap in either game.

By that time, sources said, all the relationships were broken - the relationships between the QBs and coaches and between Sharp, Sumlin and Spavital.

Basically, Sumlin contends he was forced to take Kyler Murray and promise playing time, which messed things up with Allen, sources said. And then when Sharp and his strong arms didn’t like the result, they were ready to be done Sumlin and Spavital, sources said.

“The only thing that saved Kevin Sumlin was a $20 million buyout and oil at $36 a barrel,” one source told HD. “Eric Hyman was fired because he didn’t share the view of firing Sumlin.”

I reported on Dec. 17 that Sharp was exploring the possibility of terminating Sumlin’s contract – possibly even having Sumlin fired for cause. I reported then that if Hyman wasn’t on board, he could be fired, too.

But an attorney for Sumlin indicated to A&M officials if Sumlin was fired for cause, the school would be facing a discrimination lawsuit in the neighborhood of $40 million, sources said.

Sharp told San Antonio Express-News reporter Brent Zwernamen my report was a “fairy tale.”

Sharp indicated to me that A&M had a clear chain of command – that Sharp hired and fired presidents, the president hired and fired athletic directors and the AD hired and fired coaches.

But Hyman didn’t want to fire Sumlin and didn’t believe Sumlin needed to fire Spavital.

Sharp and his strong arms, however, needed a scapegoat for A&M’s 71st-ranked scoring offense (27.8 ppg) and for the QB transfers that probably never would have happened if Sumlin wasn’t forced to take Murray, sources said.

For Sharp and his strong arms it’s all about keeping the money flowing to pay off the Kyle Field renovation, which means keeping the big money at A&M happy with football and in the giving mood. So on Wednesday HD reported that Hyman's replacement as AD would be Washington athletic director Scott Woodward and that Spavital's replacement would be UCLA OC Noel Mazzone at more than $1 million per year for three guaranteed years.

The question is if Sharp and the strong arms would have been better off never getting involved in the Kyler Murray recruitment, sources said.

Very interesting. I find the overall power structure and $ situation much more interesting than Murray.

Lets hope Sharp continues to stick his nose in everything. Now we get a better view of Sumlin's allegiance to the school if the above is true. And the lesson for UT fans is to try to hire the best man available and then step out of the way of the football end. Evaluations should not be knee jerk Djohn tirades 5 minutes after we lose a game. ( I am also guilty) Furthermore, evaluations should not only be centered around the ability to recruit a squirrelly teenager that some site has put asterisk-stars by. (And then proceeds to follow the prospect's goofy lists which change by the second on Twitter.)

It's not a knee jerk evaluation. 5-7 at Texas should not be acceptable. But it's not just the record. It's the decisions made throughout the game that have been the same for two years. It's the decisions to keep Watson and Bedford (who remains and adds nothing to recruiting). Losing Cumbie while the AD is out of town, almost losing Gilbert, like a parent said, is a sign of a disorganized staff, and athletic department. And the part about hiring the best man available and getting out of his way, didn't Strong try to lowball Gilbert which is why the AD had to fly to Tulsa? So no, none of it is knee-jerk.

Thus, the coaching changes..Nobody wants a losing record, but there is a reason most observers (including prospects) see the UT football as a program on the rise. Alot to look forward with this program and not many 5-7 teams can say that, especially with recruiting..

Beyond recruiting, how they prepare for games during film sessions, in practice, etc should be important. It didn't seem that way this past season with guys and their twitter feuds. Strong needs to let Gilbert go to work.

This guy really has no shame. I really hope nobody takes this guy serious. The rivalry and football aside, this guy is just an absolute embarrassment to the journalism profession. So many things are just not true in this article and I can't believe someone would still publish such a thing.

The School that built a stadium and now can't afford it.

The school that hired an OC that was getting fired.

The school that gave Sumlin a ridiculous amount of money to the point thee buyout is too high.

The School that is losing recruits to Strong and Herman.

The schools whose AD stepped down hours after giving Sumlin the vote of confidence

The school that was too ashamed of getting assreamed by one school and opted to become the red headed stepchild of several schools.

The school that actually jizzes into jars

The school that is one of the worst in the SEC

@mbpRivals: Noel Mazzone is not #TAMU's OC. He has left B/CS and is returning to LA to consider his options.

If you don't mind...

What specifically is not true in the piece (not having to do with Murray)?

Specfically, what is inaccurate about Sumlin, Sharp, and AtM ex AD? And the stadium $ costs as well?

I have no earthly way of knowing, so I would appreciate an accounting of inaccuracies. We need for some of your recruits to swing our way. So, it would help if your FB situation was more unstable than ours. I await any responses from any posters on Chps inaccurate statements.

Thanks.

I'm willing to bet he is denying it specifically because it was written by Chip.

I was wondering, if it wasn't true, why hasn't one of the aggsy writers made a statement to refute it?

STATESMAN: If his family gets its way, Manor linebacker Erick Fowler will back out of his commitment to LSU and sign with Texas.

They just might get their wish.

Manor’s Fowler likes LSU, but Longhorns could be in play.
Fowler plans to explore other schools before signing day, he says, and will visit Texas as part of a major recruiting weekend for the Longhorns on Jan. 15.

But first Fowler has a game to play, and he will join eight other Texans on the West squad for Saturday’s U.S. Army All-American Bowl at the Alamodome. In practices, Fowler has worked at outside linebacker and defensive end, positions that Texas melds into the Fox, a hybrid of the two.

Fowler, the state’s No. 9 player on the American-Statesman’s Fabulous 55, grew up a fan of LSU and singed his family when he bypassed Texas and committed to the Tigers on June 13.

Do they hope he changes course?

“Of course,” Fowler said.

Fowler, rated as the nation’s No. 80 prospect according to 247Sports’ composite rating, is a four-star prospect and reports offers from 16 schools.

After averaging 17.5 sacks and 90 tackles over his junior and sophomore seasons, Fowler saw his production dip this past fall. He recorded five sacks and 55 tackles and wasn’t included on the All-Central Texas team after being a first-team choice the previous two seasons. Another Manor senior linebacker, Adrian Hunter, had 97 tackles and was selected to the first team.

Manor won eight games in 2015 and advanced to the Class 5A, Division I playoffs.

“I wouldn’t have it any other way,” Fowler said. “(The seniors) have been playing with each other since sixth grade, seventh grade. I don’t have any regrets. We played our hardest.”

On Saturday, Fowler gets one more chance to make an impression in front of a national TV audience. He’ll be flanked by eight other Texans on the West team: defensive linemen Ross Blacklock (Elkins), Jordan Elliott (Houston Westside), Mark Jackson (Cibolo Steele) and Justin Madubuike (McKinney North); defensive backs Charles Oliver (Fairfield) and Sewo Olonilua (Kingwood); running back Kyle Porter (Katy); and receiver Tren’Davian Dickson (Navasota).

Texas continues to recruit Elliott, who is committed to Michigan, as well as Jackson, an A&M pledge who plans to visit Texas with Fowler and several more marquee prospects next weekend.

“Just really wanting to represent for my family, my friends, for Austin,” Fowler said. “Just show the world what God gave me to give.”

None of the players in the game are committed to Texas, which has 13 pledges in a class ranked No. 34 nationally and fourth in the Big 12. At last week’s Under Armour All-America Game in Orlando, Fla., the Longhorns landed a commitment from four-star offensive tackle Jean Delance of North Mesquite, who is being talked about as a 2016 starter at right tackle.

Delance, the No. 13 player on the Fab 55, is Texas’ highest-rated recruit.

With other recruiting areas addressed, Texas’ attention has shifted to defensive linemen after the Longhorns acquired just one player at that position last year, Charles Omenihu. This year’s class features three three-star players — ends Andrew Fitzgerald (Flower Mound) and Malcolm Roach (Baton Rouge) and tackle Gerald Wilbon (Destrehan, La.).

Fowler could join them.

What will it take?

“If a college can offer more than LSU can in the long run,” he said.
