We all know what is going on in New Orleans. We've seen the damage. We've heard stories from different people there who have experienced the worst. We have heard reports from the media there what really is going on. So, no need to go on about what is happening there.

I came up with an idea yesterday and wanted some feedback. Its very fresh and I haven't thought it out too much, but before I do I wanted an opinion. I trust you guys and know there are a lot of logical people here. I think. J/K. There are about 300 million people in the U.S. I know this may sound crazy, but what if everyone would give $1. That would be $300 million. Now I know not everyone in the U.S is able to give $1 for whatever reason. However, don't you guys think at least half of the U.S population can give $1? I was thinking of designating one day very soon (maybe 9/11) as a day where everyone is encouraged to give $1. It can be called soemthing like "Give a Dollar" day. That sounds generic, but this is fresh on my mind. It can be setup where people can drop off their money at area schools, grocerie stores, malls, or whatever from like 7:00 am to midnight. The next day the money will be counted and sent to help those in need. Can you imagine how much money would be raised? I know a lot of people would be reluctant and are greedy, but if you tell these people to give just $1, they might go for it. $1 isn't going to set people back. At least the majority. I think it can be done. It may seem impossible, but I am one who believes God can make it possible. 9/11/05 lands on a Sunday. Most people don't work on Sundays. It would make a huge difference. If half of the U.S pop gave $1, we would raise about $150 million (ball-park). Of course people can give more, but $1 would be asked since most people could give that. It may sound crazy and maybe I am. I just want the people of New Orleans to receive help. This is our country and we should help. Tell me what you think. Sorry if I took up your time with this long post, but it was in my heart.

I liek the way you think buddy.
it would need alot of volunteers...

but they could go house to house, buisness to buisness, office ot office, walk thru the malls etc etc......

And i'm sure some people would give more than $1.. but all you'd ask for is $1 so I'm sure you'd get more individuals donating.

Exactly my point. I think people would be more willing if they are told all it takes is $1.00. I think it can be done despite all the help that would be needed. We'll see.

Every bit helps, but $300 million is just a drop in the bucket.

Relief efforts probably will take something on the order of $10-30 billion.

Rebuilding New Orleans will take upwards of $100 billion.

I understand that it may take billions. However, $300 million would be almost halfway to a billion.

I guess it wasn't a good idea. Or maybe here aren't willing to give up a $1.

whoever doesnt give up a dollar for something that affects are country at this magnitude is selfish and has no patriotism. We are Americans, help your fellow americans and donate a dollar, if you cant donate a dollar then 50 cents, if a dollar doesnt sound enough send more, they need ALL they can get.

Good. So am I. I was thinking of a way to get as many Americans as we can to donate just one to make a huge impact.

I would be surprised if the total voluntary American donations don't exceed $300MM. I think by setting aside a day and amount to give, you may remove some of the motivation for some people to give $50 to $100.

It's a good thought and it comes from the right place, but I think the way we're approaching it right now - people giving based on what they are moved to give - is best.

I may be wrong though. We'll see what the final tally is.
