-I truly think Bogut is the most valuable defender in the league right now, but he plays under 24 minutes...

-Gasol has been so underwhelming this year defensively...The team is playing great defense but he really hasn't been that great..Very good but not great.

- Gobert is a defensive beast...I'm just pointing that out. Obviously he's not going to win playing under 22 minutes

- Deandre Jordan http://i3.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/000/865/302/3d5.gif

- Draymond Green :tu, he's not going to win it though because of the Bogut effect.

- Kawhi Leonard is a perimeter defender and missed a good amount of games....

It'll prolly be Duncan's this year if he stays healthy and the Spurs make a run after the ASB. Although he had a bad month in January he's been stout the rest of the time.

:lol Then again this is a media award so if the Clips stay afloat with Griffin out I can see Jordan getting it.

Duncan is the defensive player of the year.

Mazgov. He's the defensive reason as to why Cavs can get stops now and utilize their And1 basketball skills

Would be nice to see TD getting it after being snubbed for so many years the past 15 years.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2335639-ranking-midseason-contenders-for-the-2015-nba-defensive-player-of-the-year-award

This ranking (bleacherreport, I know) has TD at No. 2 and Draymond at one...

Defensive Rating: 96.5

Opponents' Field-Goal Percentage at the Rim: 46.4

It boggles the mind, but Tim Duncan—pushing 39 years old—is in the thick of this chase.

Not only does Duncan rank third in defensive win shares (2.5) and second with an individual defensive rating of 96.5, per Basketball-Reference.com, but he also ranks tied for No. 6 overall in blocks with two per night.

Also ranking as a top-15 rim protector with seemingly no spring left in his legs, it's time we formally recognize Duncan's greatness as a defender once and for all.

As ESPN Insider's Tom Haberstroh reminds us, Duncan has never been able to etch "Defensive Player of the Year" on the piece of decades-old parchment that undoubtedly contains the contents of his resume.

"How many defensive player of the year awards has Duncan won in his 18-year career? The answer, sadly, is zero," Haberstroh wrote. "He should have at least two by now—he was robbed in the 2000-01, 2006-07 and probably 2005-06 seasons—but alas, he owns as many defensive player of the year awards as Tim Thomas."

Truthfully, it would be hard to argue with granting Duncan a lifetime achievement award of sorts. Especially after he kept the San Antonio Spurs afloat while the team encountered injury-induced uncertainties aplenty throughout the season's first half.

duncan should have won this already and if they wanted to give him the nod with no clear cut favorite no issues here. but Duncan has not been the best defender and has not been as good lately as he was early this year (imho).

He has been fantastic in the first part of the season but fatigue is hitting him tbh

He is getting better last couple of games tho

I agree with OP on Gobert... he is under radar and is playing not enough minutes but dude is beast.

Tim Duncan has the highest defensive rating in the league, but that stat is more team oriented compared to defensive win shares where Green is number one. Duncan is 4th in Defensive Win Shares behind Green, Millsap, and Gasol.

The award historically has gone to shitty players. Howard won multiple times, Camby (lol), Larry fucking Sanders... and the only decent selection, imo, was TC who didn't even make 1st team all defense which boggles the mind how those two could be in conflict. The fact that a DPOY could miss 1st team is evidence enough to suggest one or both categories are bullshit anyhow. Whoever gets the most blocks, as if blocks are the pinnacle of good defense.

Pretty much this. DPOY is a terrible award. Bowen and Duncan have yet to win a single DPOY despite being nominated to 13 All-NBA first team defenses.

I don't give a fuck about the DPOY award. It has already disqualified itself as meaning anything.

With that said, it would be great if Duncan won it. He should have at least one of every NBA-related trophy in existence. :lol

I have given up on all the awards, tbh. I think all nba teams are the most legit. ROY is usually right. But MVP, DPOTY and comeback is all driven by the media narrative of that season. They get it right MOsT of the time ...but stopped valuing awards after MJ had some taken away and I didnt love MJ at the time either.

Don't know what the hell people are talking about itt when they say Howard didn't deserve those DPOYs. Howard was an awesome defender when he won it. team started Jameer Nelson, Hedo, and Rashard Lewis and he single handledly turned them into a top 5 defense

It's really interesting how versatile defenders who can switch on many pick and roll situations are becoming the sought after guys: Draymond Green, Paul Millsap, Khris Middleton, Kawhi... In the past Millsap and Green would've been undersized PFs-- liabilities--, but in today's league they're valuable because they can guard 6'6" shooters, 6'7" swing players, and 6'9" PFs. Kawhi can guard PGs, SGs, SFs, and PFs. Middleton and Green were both considered, at best, average defenders just two years ago and have both re-invented themselves as versatile modern defenders.

Duncan is going to win it because he has been very good and never won one, plus he's old as fuck. Green will get snubbed because of Bogut and Curry likely being the MVP. Gobert is a monster but he won't win because of his inexperience, the Jazz sucking, and him not playing that many minutes.

DeAndre Jordan is the other likely candidate because of his monkeyball blocks and rebounds though. And if Duncan doesn't get it I'm certain DJ will :vomit:
