Hurricane Katrina Category 5 FIVE! 175 mph and Mr Jack ass Presidente is on freaking vacation!
I was wondering how different this would all be if slick Willy would be in the oval office. At least we would see him in a air boat on the ground not flying over in a JET! We would see that classic thumbs up and more caring! This BUSH(Beast Under Satans Hatred) has not done ONE good THING! I hate being a DEMOCRAT in TEXAS!

It hit as a 4 at 145 and Bush cut his vacation short. You assume that he doesn't work on these vacations? If Clinton was president, he couldn't get down there any faster. You can't just drop the President off and say "pick you up at 7" the Secret Service has to do a lot of things to ensure the President's safety. Although you strike me as the type that if one of these 'tards who are shooting at people killed Bush, you would throw a party.

Not only will the destitute abandon their old lives, a lot of people staying in hotels and with relatives will just find jobs and housing where they are and move on with their lives.

New Orleans, upon being rebuilt, will be a metro area of maybe 300,000. We won't abandon it because it is the best deepwater port we have, but it won't be nearly as large a city, and pretty much everything will be new. The culture will be totally different.

I figure it will be like Galveston 1900 -- just plow over and level out the rubble, raise the area higher, build a seawall rather than a levee, and build on the higher ground.

That will be very expensive, but it's the only way to have a defensible cvity.

Police in New Orleans, their main communications system knocked out, have been taking turns talking on a single radio channel with their walkie talkies. The Mississippi National Guard even resorted to ancient battlefield tactics, sending runners back and forth among commanders with information.

''We've got runners running from commander to commander,'' said Maj. Gen. Harold Cross of the Mississippi National Guard. ''In other words, we're going to the sound of gunfire, as we used to say during the Revolutionary War.''

sounds like a whole new Battle of New Orleans, 190 years later.

Even Republicans were criticizing Bush and his administration for the sluggish relief effort. "I think it puts into question all of the Homeland Security and Northern Command planning for the last four years, because if we can't respond faster than this to an event we saw coming across the Gulf for days, then why do we think we're prepared to respond to a nuclear or biological attack?" said former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

He urged Bush to name former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani as the White House point person for relief efforts. Rep. John Sweeney (news, bio, voting record), R-N.Y., also suggested Giuliani or former Secretary of State Colin Powell or retired Gen. Tommy Franks to take charge of the relief efforts.

The problem is that there's never an outsider brought in. They always want to reccomend people who are already in the loop. These are the same people that have allowed us to lag this way in response. Maybe not directly, but the mindset is the same.

And I'm not meaning this as a partisan thing, because god knows if the democrats led as well as they bitch then we'd see progress.

The entire beaurcratic machine is a fucking virus. Elected officials love to talk about being ready and they love to make grand speeches and promote grand ideas but they aren't the real thinkers. They're the performers. I want input from the private sector and I want it done in order to get the best information on how we can handle these things in the future.

I do want to say one thing about Bush. During a crisis, he shines when he's with the people. He's a Texan, and those of you from here know what I mean by that. If he sees a problem, he tries to fix it himself. I don't agree with how he fixes things most of the time, but I do admire the way he reacts in times like this.

He's probably right on some issues, but I'd like to know how different the situation might have been if he had not waited until the last minute to order the evacuation. We all know he pleaded for everyone to get out, but what buses, shuttles and community outreach was underway to help the disadvantaged to evacuate? Anybody know

Is he bitching himself out?

Everyone dropped the ball but him?? uh ok....

I doubt they're going to use Reliant Stadium to house refugees a few weeks before the NFL starts it's season. The article was in error about that.

Reliant Arena is a relatively old facility that hosts small conventions and blood drives and such. I've heard conflicting reports about whether it or Reliant Center is where the refugees are heading next.

Reliant Center is a brand-new, gleaming convention center.

I've also heard that refugees are going to George R. Brown, the big convention center downtown.

We have to do what we have to do, but I don't want to see anybody acting surprised when Houston's two big sites we use to attract conventions are completely trashed out and reek of urine and shit. Refugee camps aren't pretty.

Reliant Arena is a pretty small building in comparison.

I want input from the private sector and I want it done in order to get the best information on how we can handle these things in the future.

.

No kidding. And all these know-it-all gas bags are doing press conferences. Today, some angry "disgusted" congresswoman from Michigan, (and a few other pissed off politicos not involved in the relief efforts), held a press conference to bitch about the Federal government, and tell us all that she is "ashamed of America". Fuck her. What has she done to help? Then some collegue of hers, a reverand so and so starts talking a lot of crap about how God is looking down on America with disgust and disapproval. Obviously some things are going terribly wrong, but the audacity and hubris of some of these politicians who are not even contributing, just bitching about how everyone else is fucking up just makes my blood boil. But at least she and her outraged friends got a chance to get their ugly mugs on TV.

I don't expect him to fly rescue missions in a blackhawk, I expect him to show his face and to do what he can the way he's doing.

2 days ago wasn't the time for Bush to be there, now is. 2 days ago was the time for people who were appointed to take care of these situations to pull their thumbs from their asses and do their jobs. They fucked up.

WASHINGTON (AP): Rep. John Sweeney, R-N.Y., urged President Bush to appoint former New York City mayor Rudolph Giuliani or two former military officials to run the ground response in the Gulf Coast, saying local authorities are not up to the task. Sweeney suggested Giuliani or retired generals Colin Powell and Tommy Franks could take charge of the much-criticized hurricane relief efforts. Click here.

I went to lunch came back, and had a lot I was going to respond to in this thread.

But Manny summed it up perfectly. Bush tried to let the people (particularly the head of FEMA) do their job. But they've failed, he's recognized that, and has personally stepped in to make sure shit gets fixed.

That's how you lead, and how you manage.
