As a lot of people know, many animals were brought from N.O. shelters here to San Antonio and need a home. LJ and I decided to adopt one. We haven't had a dog in a few years and really wanted one, so we figured this would be the best time.

We picked him out on Wednesday, but we couldn't bring him home until today. He had to get neutered :(

His name at the shelter was TANK, but we are thinking of changing it.

See this poll. (http://spurstalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24266)

Here, he is ..

He's a 3-year-old black lab. As you can see, he's super skinny (ribs showing). :(

Fortunately for him, 70-80 dogs and cats were brought from a shelter in N.O. to the Bexar County Human Society on Tuesday night. Then they reduced the cost of adoption from $89 to $45 if you got one of the Hurricane Dogs (and that included spay/neuter if necessary).

Wow! We ought to check the Houston shelters for something similar, but I'm having a hard time picturing adding a small dog (can't have anything bigger in our poor small place) and my cat will not tolerate another cat (he thinks he's royalty). It's still worth taking a look. . . I hate to think about all the animals that will be put to sleep or die naturally because of all of this. :depressed

Well the standard adoption fee covers neutering with some pain medicine (not morphine) but you can pay extra and get complete bloodwork and a morphine shot, plus some pills for afterward. We got everything extra because I wanted to get a full blood panel to make sure he was okay -- it was an extra $82.00.

Weird thing is that he's terrified to go up and down the stairs.

Kori,
He's beautiful. What a sweet face. It's great that you're taking him in, but, have you thought of the possibility that, his New Orleans family, if they survive, will be looking for him soon? Are you going to post his picture on a missing dogs site?

Kori Ellis
09-02-2005, 09:20 PM
They are dogs that were already in the shelter in New Orleans, so they aren't dogs that the owners will come looking for (as far as I know?). They are just dogs that were transfered from the N.O. shelter to the Bexar County Humane Society. I am pretty sure that they were in the shelter PRIOR to the hurricane.

Levy: snce that is what broke and made all the floods.
Crash: Unless your computer Crashes he may never get any attention.
Slomo: since the dog looks like it traveled a long way and could use a shot of pear Brandy
Banhim:since that is what the dog will hear on a regular basis.

Possibly Kennel Cough. No one that boards dogs for you lets a dog in without the Bordatella vaccine (it's drops the vet puts in the nose). I'm sure since these are rescue dogs it's possible none of them ever had the vaccine so it's possible he has it. The vaccine is about $17

He may have received it too late and already had it? I think it goes away on it's own. I know when we shipped out dog from Luxembourg back in the 70s, he had it and was quarantined for 2 weeks.

Kori Ellis
09-03-2005, 08:30 AM
I called the vet where he had the surgery said that he either already had it (and it's Kennel Cough) or it's irritation from the trachea thing during surgery. I have to just let it go until Tuesday and then if he isn't better, get antibotics.

Shelly
09-03-2005, 08:32 AM
A lot of times, you can give dogs the same medicines we take. I know for a fact you can give a dog Benedryl. Maybe try a pediatric cough medicine?

HOW IS IT TREATED?

Although most cases will go away on their own, we like to think we can hasten recovery with antibiotics to directly kill the Bordetella organism. Alternatively, Kennel Cough may be treated with cough suppressants to provide comfort during natural recovery. Or antibiotics and cough suppressants can be combined.

How can I train my dog to poop in one general area outside instead of everywhere ?

First, keep the rest of the yard, where you don't want him to go, absolutely spotless and free of poop and pee. The smell of it that's already there will last for a long time but you don't need to add to it.

Then you're going to have to make quite a time investment in taking the dog outside yourself when it's time to pee and poop. Take him on a leash and teach him to go where you want him to go. Give him a command (I tell my dogs "Mach schnell" --"hurry up" in German, but it sounds better to the neighbors than "crap, damn you". ) After many many repetitions, it will become his place to go, and you can start letting him off the leash while watching him, give his command, and make sure he goes there and nowhere else. If he starts to go elsewhere, say "no" and guide him back to his place.

Dog training takes a lot of time and patience, but the rewards are worth it. And I'm assuming from this that your dog is an indoor dog, as all dogs should be. If he's an outdoor dog, your best bet is to put up a dog run and let him go in there. It's kind of hard to train a lonely dog.

mouse
09-03-2005, 08:42 AM
If you use any type of powder odor killer on your carpet, the dog will sometimes have a some sort of reaction to it, and that's no "Mach schnell"

On the cough thing--he wasn't treated for heartworms, was he? I assume they would have told you if so. Most dogs in shelters in mosquito areas have heartworms. They treat them with poison that kills the worms, but the worms break apart and sometimes go into the lungs and cause the dog to cough. That's why you have to keep dogs on crate rest when they're recuperating from HW treatment--too much exercise causes more aspiration into the lungs.

As I said though, I would have thought that they would have told you. Could his records have gotten misplaced with all the confusion of the transfer?

Kori Ellis
09-03-2005, 08:48 AM
I guess I just have to wait. They said a lot of dogs get it and not to worry he's not that uncomfortable (even though it sounds like he's going to hock up a lung) .. which I guess is true because he wags his tail like crazy even when he's coughing.

When he's laying down, he's okay. So I'll encourage him to rest.

He wasn't treated for heartworm lately and he had the test on the day he was taken in here (Tuesday) and it's negative.

I just think it's the Kennel Cough thing. It could be the trachea thing too, I guess -- she said it's rather common.

He went back to sleep now (in our bed) so I guess he's fine for now.

That's good, probably is just kennel cough. Even with the vaccination, dogs can get it.

Not meaning to harp on the heartworms, but you might want to make sure at a later date that he is retested for heartworms. There are various tests and a dog can test negative once and later test positive, if there were no adult worms in his system during the first test. I have fostered a lot of dogs here in San Antonio, and I can tell you that it was unusual to find one that didn't have HWs if they weren't on preventative. And one of them tested negative at first and positive on a followup test. I would assume there are even more mosquitoes in NO than there are here.

Also get that flea/and heartworm combo pill. Blondie was full of fleas when we found her and since using that stuff, she's never had a flea. It's pricey, but worth it.

Originally, we were using Revolution, but my vet starting getting too many positives on the heartworm test. They didn't know if it was the product or if people were applying it incorrectly (it was a topical application). I'm now using Sentinel

Your dog got Kennel Cough with the Bordetella vaccine at Rob Cary? I've boarded my dog several times there (she's spoiled, but I sure has hell ain't forking out the $$$ for a 4-poster bed and tv! :lol) with no problem. They are just way out in BFE

They've been great as far as grooming, but I haven't used them for anything else.

For vet services, we either go on base or to Ingram Park Animal Hospital and Dr. Bortle.

Kori,

Don't worry. I'm sure Tank Is ok but just needs time to adjust.

The poor baby has gone through so much these past few days.

Once again Congrats on your new addition to the family. God bless you!

Is it possible he's having panic attacks? He has been through a shock and now he's in another world. Some dogs react this way from stress. Maybe some doggie xanax would help?

Hmm...haven't seen that place.

I guess it's about a year old. I didn't know about it either until I saw the card at my vets.

What pet owners spend on boarding is music to the ears of Michelle Guerrero and Jason Sauceda, who opened Home Away From Home kennel on Mainland Road about a year ago.

Holidays and weekends have been packed at the 65-run kennel, which is open Sundays and specializes in housing large dogs. Michelle Guerrero said pet day care is starting to become one of her most popular services.

"Sometimes it's a one-day affair, and some use it Monday through Friday," Guerrero said. "Day care is meant for a dog to be socialized. A lot of people are taught that crate training is a good idea, but it's hard when you have to work late or run errands after work."

And though doggie day care seems like a good idea, it can run a customer at Home Away From Home about $160 a month — if they leave their pet there five days a week.

Thanks for all the suggestions/ideas. I'm 99% sure it's Kennel Cough. When he lays down and rests, he's fine. But when he's walking around he hacks/coughs constantly - it's sad. I wish I could get him to just lay in bed and rest until he feels better.

At least he doesn't seem sad or in pain or anything.

so now not only have people lost their homes, some have lost family members, lost access to water and nessities, but people are stealing, looting their beloved pets now too. Have to suffer the lose of hurricane and then not have your loved pet considering how pets have been shown to help eldery people be more happy and healthy.

It is a shame peopel have to take other peoples pets away.

might as well adopt lost babies that were in hospitals and not return them to their mother and father.

has their even been an atempt to reconnect families are they just round them up and shipp them across america

I'm quoting this because I want to be sure what I originally read isn't edited later.

These are dogs that were already in the shelter BEFORE the hurricane. They aren't dogs they found on the street or anything. They saved them from the flooding shelter in N.O. where they were up for adoption already.

Why is that hard for you to understand? They don't belong to anyone. They were already waiting to be adopted.

Did you get it checked for heartworms? A symptom is excessive coughing.

Nevermind I went back and read the posts where he was checked.

He's not hacking as much. (Still quite a bit, but not every few minutes like before.)

And he still doesn't have an official name:)
