Derrick Rose has an important yet difficult decision to make in the coming days.

The former MVP, who suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee, will decide whether to have the injured part repaired or taken out. The latter would give Rose a significantly shorter timetable to return to the court but hurt his long term outlook, while having the injury repaired for a second straight year would yield a longer recovery time but help his longevity.

But as Dr. Mark Bowen of the NorthShore Orthopaedic Institute explains, Rose's only real option may be to have the piece taken out.

"(There are) very few circumstances, in my experience, that you can attempt to re-repair the meniscus. It has to be a perfect setting. But if that were the case, that would be an option again for them to re-stitch it," he said. "Now, statistically it's low. Because usually what happens is you get a tear that occurs through one of the prior stitch holes or part of it heals, and that ends up being a situation where you remove some of the meniscus. The bad side is that that would mean removing some of the meniscus. The good thing is that the recovery isn't as protracted."

That, of course, would mean Rose having the potential to return this season, though the former MVP has spoken at length about wanting to preserve his knees for later in his post-basketball life.
