Asking favorite Pink Floyd LP is insane. That is like saying which of your twin daughters you love more.

To pick any LP that doesn't have the song Have a cigar would show your not a true Pink Floyd lover.

hMr3KtYUCcI

Also how can you dismiss the dark side of the Moon LP if you love Animals? How can you dismiss The Divisions Bell the LP that confirmed the Waters and Gilmour separation with lyrics like Keep talking and guitar riffs that taunt Waters as a cry baby?

Go right ahead and try and say one LP is better than the other but I know you will want to edit your choices someday if not now then later

Meddle is a great album but a little unrefined imo. San Tropez is out of place on that album and Pillow of Winds/Fearless are just okay songs imo. Echoes is what takes the entire album up (because it's like half of it). That is probably my favorite or second favorite song by them.

But by far my favorite album is Wish You Were Here. Everything about it is perfect and a very thoughtful musical translation of the band's feelings for their former frontman. Also has a lot of personal sentimentality tbh but it has everything you want from Floyd -- crazy psychedelic rock, beautiful piano work, trippy effects, rocking solos, great singing, and long instances of pure instrumental glory.

Animals is also a very good album but I ding it because I dislike the opening/ending tracks, mostly because I am not as much of a Waters fan and he kinda has a shitty voice

Dark Side is always a safe choice because it doesn't have any 12+ minute long songs that take up large potions of the album and has a lot of memorable, great songs and obvious changes in mood/style. More diverse but not as intense, imo

It was a joke. I really didn't like it much. I did put it on a couple of time while I fell asleep. I like PF but can't say I was a huge fan. My favorite is probably Final Cut. But I also like Momentary Lapse of reason with all Gilmore.

Momentary Lapse is solid. Learning to Fly is one of my favorite songs and really exemplifies Gilmour's ability to write power lyrics

It's not awful but just nothing particularly remarkable that makes me want to listen again. I read a lot of negative reviews but wanted to like it but they mostly were right. I was really only aware of PF when The Wall came out and went back a few albums and listened to Animals and DS but never checked out the older stuff although I always meant to.

^ This is a favorite Floyd album thread tbh

The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn is my favorite because I much prefer early Floyd. I have to say that Dark Side is their most cohesive album though. I like a few tracks off most of their records, but honestly I find Roger Waters to be humorless and heavy handed. I would rather listen to Syd Barrett solo records.

It's the safe choice....but The Wall is certainly up there.

I really like "Wish you were here" too. Have a Cigar...Shine on you crazy diamond....But IIRC...there is only like 5-6 tracks on the record. The Wall has like 30 songs....Comfortably Numb, Another brick in the wall (part 2), mother, The trial, waiting on the worms, run like hell, the show must go on....all great tracks.

BTW...dark side of the moon and Animals are also great. This is a tough choice tbh....

Eh, I think Money fits well in the context of the album. Maybe I've listened to it too many times blown out of my mind but I always see it as a long musical exposition of one's life from beginning to end. There's a kind of somber feel to Meddle except for San Tropez which made it feel weird there. Still a good song though. I like Pillow of Winds but it's almost too chill for me at this point. Fearless is good but has too much random chanting on it.

I am a huge Floyd fan but imo their early stuff like Piper or Atom Heart is really meh, Gilmour himself later said it was mostly just noise.

Top 5 Floyd songs:

1. Echoes
2. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (both parts combined)
3. Dogs
4. Time
5. Have a Cigar

Tough for me to pick as so many of their songs are awesome.

Meddle is my favorite. There's just something loose and fun in it, especially for Floyd standards. And then it all culminates in Echoes, which is their best song imo. As long as it is, I usually play it on repeat. I really dig Pillow of Winds, puts my mind at ease.

I like a lot of the earlier stuff and Barrett's solo work, but to me the band really got good with Gilmour, he brought some needed soul. Without Gilmour you end up with a lot of Water's pretentious wankery. He's talented but insufferable, it's the same reason I've never gotten into the Wall, despite some classic songs on it.

This song seems like an obvious attempt of the money overlords of Pink to copy the Beatles? Or vice versa?

Indeed Barett according to Wiki:
Barrett, reportedly, was not happy with the final studio cut, and he protested against its release, which producer Norman Smith speculated was based on his fear of commercialism.

Tremendous song. That guitar tone/riff is killer.

And I'm not really surprised to see a lot of people mentioning The Wall, what with its "cultural importance" (artistic pretension), but it really is the beginning of their downfall, in my opinion. Some good/great songs, but a historic amount of filler and a plot owing so much to The Who's Tommy that parts border on plagiarism.

As others have said, Syd Barrett just seems a much more interesting person with more to say (musically and lyrically) than Waters or Gilmour.

The Wall is most people's first exposure to Floyd. It was huge and the movie is a must see for every stoned teenager. However, looking back on it, I think it's pretty weak. Especially as a double album. The movie, barring the animation, is fucking awful too.

You hit the nail on the head about The Wall. I remember we were at a party watching it for the first time and we ended up FF or Rew just to watch the animation. Of course most of the context was lost on a bunch of middle schoolers. And yeah...not a great double album but it did contain some great songs. Don't know how much financial success the band would have achieved without the push from The Wall (the song) getting wide radio play. I guess DSOTM still would have held its own.
