An American company is conducting research which would allow men who are unhappy with the results of the procedure to reverse their circumcisionUntil now, circumcision has been an irreversible operation, often conducted on boys who are too young to consent to the removal of their foreskin.
But as the practice - which dates back thousands of years - has become more controversial over recent decades, a US organisation is developing procedures which could undo the operation in men who are unhappy with its results.
Foregen, a not for profit group which was founded to “research and implement regenerative medical therapies for circumcised males”, recently announced a Kickstarter campaign (http://www.foregen.org/foregen_president_vincenzo_aiello_shares_recent_pr ogress_and_announce_kickstarter) to fund further studies of foreskin regrowth.
“In the short term, we hope to fully regenerate human foreskins,” reads a statement on Foregen's website, a goal it claims will require $3m worth of funding over three years. “Once we have accomplished that, our goal is to advance onto human clinical trials as soon as it is safe to do so.”
They say this regeneration can be achieved by creating an extra-cellular matrix for tissue, which provides attachment points for cells. If stem cells are added to an appropriate ‘skeleton’, they will grow into a functioning, sensitive foreskin.

Foregen have already experimented on animals and have made steps towards recreating bull foreskins. Other scientists have been able to partially regenerate human breast (http://www.wired.com/2010/10/ff_futureofbreasts/all/) (http://www.wired.com/2010/10/ff_futureofbreasts/all/)and vaginal tissue.
Male circumcision is the norm in many cultures and is required for boys born into Islam or Judaism. Some studies have shown that the practice protects against sexually transmitted diseases, including the human papilloma virus - cutting rates of penile cancer, as well cervical cancer in women as they are less likely to contract the virus from men.
But in recent years, doctors’ groups in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Holland, Iceland and Australia have spoken out against the practice, claiming that it reduces sensitivity in the penis and causes psychological damage to children, without bringing noticeable benefits.
