This is a big deal. Many top-level FAs would be stupid to sign long-term deals starting at 25% of next year's cap ($66M) when they could wait one year and get 25% of the 2017 cap ($90M). Sure they risk injury, but the reward is potentially huge; an extra $6M in the first year of a long-term deal will compound itself, and for a younger player, he could get higher grandfathered salary increases later in his career.

Speaking of young players about to get maxed out, would Kawhi Leonard opt for the one-year deal? Something to fear for Spurs fans. He could significantly increase his earning potential by waiting a year. He would also be a UFA then.

And I'm not connecting the dots on why the lack of a smoothing deal means a higher chance of a lockout in 2017. Will the owners try to impose cap smoothing procedures in the future to achieve some measure of salary predictability?

The owners should offer a middle ground to the players. Moderate jumps in cap ($10-12 each year over two years instead of one huge jump). In return, players salaries are all grossed up by whatever the difference in actual and calculated cap is just for the one year.

Keeps that one offseason from being weird.

Lets hope Kawhi takes the money now.

kawhi would lose around 10-13M in the first year by signing the QO. Don't see, why would he do that, also risking an injury.

"In fact, only seven teams have $40 million or more committed past next year — Chicago, Golden State, Houston, the Clippers, New York, Oklahoma City, and Washington. Of those, only the Clippers (at about $58 million) are over $50 million in commitments.

That means that 23 teams currently have the potential to enter the 2016 free-agency period with at least $50 million in cap space. Six figure to have around $40 million. And one will have almost $30 million."

you mean the guy that was a cavs reporter/beat writer from 2003-2010, transferred to ESPN in 2010 to cover the Miami heat, and after the 2014 finals transferred to ESPN Cleveland?

the guy who gave this quote?

In an interview, Windhorst stated that "obviously LeBron's a huge factor" in his decision to join ESPN, but that the Cavaliers "need to move on" without James.

:lol imagine having this fuck follow you around your entire life... and as a cherry on top, the bottom left corner

As careful as teams have gotten about locking into bad deals in recent years, it’s hard to believe owners will suddenly go hog wild and hand out so many bad deals in 2016 that they will be universally handicapped in 2017.

Wanna bet?

Another reason to fire Cock Quitters and start blowing it up. $50+ million locked up in an average team with no opportunity to improve in 2016 (while nearly everyone else can) is outrageous.

The problem without the smoothing is that free agents who signed before the cap shot up will be out of luck and will not be rewarded with the increased revenue from the league.

I would imagine a better way to do this is to cap smooth, but bump up everyone's salary as a "bonus". Say the current cap is $65M and the new cap will be $90M (illustrative purposes, and easier on the math), the cap can be eased in over 5 years, with each year going up $7M. But that doesn't mean that the owners will pocket that extra $28M in the first year, $21M in the second year, etc ... that extra money will be spread out as a percentage increase to the players. So the first year, players will get a $28M/$72M ($65M + $7M) extra to their salary, or something like a 40% increase. So a player who is on contract for $1M a year will now be paid $1.4M. Then the next year, it will be a $21M/$79M (or whatever the new cap will be), etc ....

This will, to an extent, reduce the possibility of having the crazy GMs running the asylum, while allowing all players to benefit from the new deal.

Trade: Blake or Paul

or let 'Dre walk which would you pick?

That $58 million doesn't include DeAndre which would put it around $78 for just 6 players

The problem with 23 teams having so much money and only a handful of stars is that 16-18 teams are probably going to walk away empty handed and then overspend on mediocre players to reach the salary floor.

this money takes affect after next season. They would have to both sign 1 year deals and then sign another deal and play another season. Hard to see Duncan playing 2 full seasons and Manu as well.
