Let's talk some rasslin'

I grew up in central Cali, here we had the NWA in the north and the WWA in the south. The NWA was north of Delano, the WWA south. In the north the big star was Ray Stevens the blond bomber. He was the US Champion (Cali version) a few other stars back then were Pepper Gomez, Ray "Thunder" Stern (a local bobybuilder) Cowboy Bob Ellis, Mitzu Arwakawa & Kenji Shibuya. But guys were always coming in to challenge Stevens for the title (no not really)

In the south the kingpin was Classie Freddie Blassie, he was the WWA World Champion. The Destroyer (Dick Beyers), Baron Michel Leoni, Edouard Carpentier, Mr Moto were also big in the region.

So on Wednesdays it was BIG TIME WRESTLING from Fresno and on Saturdays "Wrestling from the Olympic Auditorium" in LA. I knew about the rest of the rasslin' world because of the magazines. There's where I learned about the original "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers, Bruno Sammartino, Killer Kowalski, The Sheik, Antonio Rocca, Verne Gagne and on and on.

It was the best of times for the biz, because we saw tons of rasslers and promotions.

This will be the top 10 PRE 1970

1.Lou Thesz
2.Bruno Sammartino
3."Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers
4.Verne Gagne
5.Killer Kowalski
6.Fred Blassie***
7.Antonio Rocca
8.Dick the Bruisier
9.Ray Stevens
10.The Sheik

After 1970

1.Hulk Hogan
2."Nature Boy" Ric Flair
3."Superstar" Billy Graham
4.Dusty Rhodes
5.Pedro Morales
6.Harley Race
7.Dory Funk Jr.
8.Randy "Macho Man"Savage
9."Stonecold" Steve Austin
10.Shawn Michaels

*** when Wrestling Revue magazine (the Bible of the sport) did their MOST HATED POLL they listed a bunch of guys but for some reason Blassie wasn't there. It didn't matter, he won it anyway with write in votes. That's the impact he made.

This was at the time the biggest gate in pro rasslin' history, it drew over 30,000 fans which was huge for the times. It was the US Champion "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers taking on the Pat O' Conner the NWA World Champion. As we know Rogers would become the first WWWF World Champion, story goes he beat Antonio Rocca in a tournament, yep, bullshit!

NFLers Eugene "Mercury" Morris and Duane Thomas are who we think about when talking about West Texas State. They also had a receiver in Rocky Thompson but he's little known.

So what does that have to do with rasslin'?

All these guys were WTS Buffalos who became pro rasslers.

Tully Blanchard a QB
Dusty Rhodes
"Dirty" Dick Murdoch
Stan "The Lariat" Hansen
Tito Santana
Brusier Brody
Ted DiBiase
Blackjack Mullighan
Dory Funk Jr.
Terry Funk

I have no idea the connection.

When it comes to the rasslin' we have to look at the impact made, not their in ring ability. Hell, right now Dolpf Ziggler can wrestle circles around all those guys making the big $$$$$$. Well this is no different. Michaels while the superior perfrormer simply didn't make the same sort of impact on the biz.

When I was a kid, me and my two cousins (also big rasslin' fans) would take index cards make some little squares with all the rasslers names on them. We had about a 500 names, then cut the little squares, put them in a coffee can and....hahaha!!!!!!!!!

We'd make cards, tag teams, tournaments.

Then, we made a board similiar to Monopoly, the squares had holds and PUNCH...KICK...DROP KICK...haha!!!!!!!!! So we rolled the dice and the highest dice....

He first started out as The Spider, ha~~~ Like most these guys he jacked around in small time promotions learning the biz. The first time I became aware of him was in the CWA out of Memphis, he was in a big feud with the King of Memphis Jerry Lawler. I'm pretty sure this is where the WWF (at that time) became aware of him. I was really impressed with him and knew he'd be getting recruited.

I saw that match and like you said, he was impressive.

I saw Hulk Hogan in some tv interview, when they asked him who he worked with the best, he didn't hesitant.....The Macho Man..as he does his best Randy Savage, ha~~~

Avante, you constantly talk about that old shit, and it was beyond garbage.. 1/5 wrestlers I'd say were even in shape, let alone athletic enough to give/take moves.. speaking of moves, they were shit. A regular old pile driver, or a head butt or some lame ass move was considered devastating and would be used as a finisher.. that shit sucks, I don't know how you still enjoy it other than for nostalgia.

I do plan on watching that, just not right now.

I bet that Foreman vs Ron Lyle fight is there. That was the greatest heavyweight fight I;ve seen.

If you're into boxing ya need The Boxing Register, it's the must have book. It tells the story. Guys like Tom Molineax the slave who fought for the world title, George "Little Chocolate" Dixon who was suppose to have fought over 800 fights, sometimes fighting thee times in a day. Tiger Flowers, Kid Gavilan, you'd love iit.

That shit sucks to be honest. You might get off on it, I don't.

Trust me guy, today pro rassling is more a comedy than it ever was. The story lines are shit. The constant disrespecting our intelligence sucks. Back it in the day it was more realistic, not a fucking cartoon like you just showed me.

If you're into jumping beans, cool, I;m not. Dude, there is no drama today, ok? Sooooo easy to predict everything, it wasn't always like that.

Stop with this stupid..."it's what I like so it's better"...ok? I've seen it all for a long time, ok?

Let me explain something....

Back in the day, the rasslin' game knew how to work your emotions better. If a guy punched his opponet it meant something, there was more drama involved. There was a play being acted out. Today it's just a bunch of silly shit trying to wow you not tell you a story. It's actually boring because you know everything that's going to happen. Why is it so goofy today? Who buys all the shit, yep...kids! We used to see more mature angles because their target audience wasn't a 17 year old kid. How many kids are in the audience in those old black and white videos, yep, they aren't. Kids don't care about drama, the story, they just want action.

Example of predictability.

Roman Reigns will beat Brock Lesnar at Wrestlemania? Now who has been carrying around his Money in the Bank contract for the last six months? So what's going to happen? And we all know it they know we know it, well that sucks. The game wasn't anywhere close to being as predictabe as we see today.

You've always had the love poem down, yes you sell your emotions, we can feel what you feel. That one is great as they all are. But when do you start widening those horisons and extending those perimeters? It's time to try something else go in another direction. Do something with an edge to it.

allright...let's talk wrasslin then...

I was a fan back when it was real. Yep...at the Dallas Sportatorium...Von Erichs vs. Gary Hart's stable. Gotta admit...yeah...I liked the bad guys. Especially the Spoiler. Cat would get up on the ropes and prowl like a giant...well...cat.
Then the conflicted guys who went from good to bad to good to bad. Bruiser Brodi for one. Also remember the hoopla when Hart was going to import a mysterious fighter from the Orient. Was said to blow smoke. Yep...Kabuki.
Didn't like the Von Erichs much other than Kevin and old man Fritznig6er (as Avante calls him). Love the iron claw when it was applied so hard that it drew blood. I remember the Kerri Von Erich dying from yep...eating a tampon would you believe.

Went from there to Mid South Wrestling for a while. My favorite? Thanks for asking...yep...it was the Junkyard Dog. Black dude by the way. Always liked the show outro where they showed slo mo wrasslin clips over We Are the Champions.

allright...let's talk wrasslin then...

I always got such a kick out of the use of "blood" during the matches. It would always cause the fans to go nutty nuts. From the moment the blood appears the crowd noise increases dramatically. Close your eyes some time and test it.

The early times of The Undertaker was impressive. It played on America's fear & fascination with death, morgue activities and the casket. What an incredible invention it was.

The acting of Savage & Elizabeth the most comprehensive and of highest quality. They played it straight down the line, never wavering for a moment during their air time. I can only imagine the practice & rehearsal they must have endured to get that to such a pristine pitch. It was sheer perfection.

The 80's thru the 90's was a majestic time for professional rasslin'...the acts fed upon one another, the energy spreading like wild fire, the conflagration rising as these men were driven, yes by money, but, also by something else. After the score had ended we are right to remember the grand times, but, the carnage, upon gross examination is sobering and leaves us stunned as we bear witness this aftermath of death and incalculable misery.

Two things ya can't do even in the wack rasslin' biz, one is poke fun at religion or use the crazed Arab **the sponsers simply won't allow that to happen.

** there was a time however when we had a number of crazed Arabs, the best being the original....The Sheik.

Not that that had shit to do with what you were talking about.

The Sheik was fantastic. He did years twixt Detroit & Cleveland and into Canada with Bobo Brazil. Just a fuckin' war. They'd do the 2 out of 3 falls Championship matches,,,that way the crowd would get the 1 victory every time, but, never the second. The Sheik would always pull the foreign object and Bobo would be rendered helpless. When you're a kid you wanted Bobo to win, but, now as an adult I see the wrong in that.

One time, Sheik got the first pin, and in the "second round" Bobo went after him with a vengeance, grabbed him and Coco butted him, but, instead of letting him drop and pin him, he grabbed him, straightened him, held him and butted him again. It was just fuckin' fantastic.

When Johnny Valentine came to town it was something special. He'd appear in a long robe type covering and with his blonde hair he was really impressive. He and Johnny Powers went at for like 3 years. One night they had to call the Cleveland PD because Valentine beat him so bad. It made the Cleveland Plain Dealer and they did a remote from Johnny's house out in Seven Hills and few days afterward and he was all fucked up. I don't know if it was part of the act, but, it was great.

The Sheik an all time great, yep, legend.

He actually ran the Detroit promotion for years, obviously the crazy man thing just a gimmick.

Bobo was the first black rassler to hold a world title.

Johnny Valentine also a legend, a great worker who sold like nobody else. The father of Greg "The Hammer". He was on that plane that crashed with Ric Flair.

And they had to be careful and judicious with the crowd and The Sheik. You could only push it so far before it could become ugly. The screams as the match reached it's zenith a signal to begin the end. He was a polarizing figure upon sight, the pointed shoes a signature of his presence. His matches were sudden, quick and extremely violent.

What has hurts the biz is how much it relies on tv $$$$ today, so because of that certain things can't be done because of those paying the big $$$$$$. Back in the indie days the weekly shows were on local tv, the $$$$ was made at the arenas. Yes the rasslers weren't making anything close to what we see today so that would work.

We can no longer see the badass Russians, the diabolical Asians, the crazed Arabs, the nazi stepping Germans. Too many sensitive pussies out there. So we get a watered down product, more interested in a young audience who will buy action figures, championship belts. etc.

Yeah, each week we had All Star Wrestling on WUAB TV-43, a UHF station in the suburbs of Cleveland. It would open with the sound of "Classical Gas" and be hosted by Jack Reynolds. My brother & I went one time to see the taping. It was just weird seeing Johnny Powers walking around the studio in a suit. They'd spend the hour having matches and advertising the upcoming week's card at the Cleveland Arena. My father loved it and we'd go religiously.

My first memories of the rasslin; was sitting on the floor next to my grandma (she thought it was real, and so did I back then) making sure not to knock over her spit can, she chewed snuff and listening to her...."he's pulling his trunks, he's pulling his trunks, come on ref you blind"...haha!!!!!!!! We were watching...The Scufflin; Hillbillies, Ox Anderson, "Wild" Red Berry, a young Fred Blassie, Mr.Moto, Sandor Szabo, The Sharpes. It was our thing to do. I'd ride my bike over once a week to watch the rasslin' with her.

When you're a child you want to believe it to be real, and yet I remember every kid asking if it was. Like Santa Claus my father would be noncommittal, that way I never knew exactly. Coming back from Akron one time (to see a show up there) we ran into Ron "The Rebel" Saunders (a third liner) at a gas station where he was having a flat tire fixed. My friends and I badgered him for like 20 minutes about "if it was real." And like my father he never divulged. Like magicians, then the rassler obeyed his code of conduct, his gentleman's agreement, his Masons creed.

Would you believe......

Sting and The Ultimate Warrior started out in the business as a tagteam? Sting was Flash and The Warrior was Rock, They called themselves..The Star-something. Then after they split up Rock became the Dingo Warrior and Flash became Sting.

George "The Animal" Steele was also a school teacher.

The Junkyard Dog once played for the Packers.

Ric Flair was a power lifter.

Roman Reigns played football at Georgia Tech.

Randy Orton, John Cena, Brock Lesnar and Batista all came out Ohio Valley Wrestling. The OVW.

Now that Wrestlemania is over....

Roman Reigns vs Randy Orton is where things need to go. Obviously after Reigns wins the title from Rollins. Then Lesnar steps in to feud with Reigns who will come out on top of Orton.

That foursome of Reigns, Rollins, Orton and Lesnar where the focus should be. With Rollins ending up feuding with John Cena.

I was shocked to see that many people there, it was the biggest crowd most of them had ever been in front of before, even Sting had never been in front of 77,000 before.

You should create a book of lists of the things you know about. Different chapters for different subjects. Blues, T&F, Football, Wrestling. Then fill up each section with the lists you think would be interesting for someone who didn't know much to read. Add some facts where you can to each of the names. Things that aren't obvious the public. You should put all of that into a book and then shove it up your ass.

It is pretty amazing isn't it? I do get the attitude, if I were some dumbass kid who didn't know shit about anything I'd act the same way. Simply human nature.

I could have these chapters...

Robert E. Howard and the Heroic Fantasy novel.

The Black athlete in Track & Field and Football.

Gorgeous George

George "Liitlle Chocolate Dixon and boxing.

Eugene Sandow and the Origins of Body Building.

The HBCU in Sport.

H.G.Wells and the origins of the Sci Fi Novel.

Monk Williams and the Origins of the Gothic Novel.

Who Influensed the Guy Who Influensed Elvis?

The White Sprinter/Running Back.

Fantasy Hero's and Villians.

Hicks, Hobos and Guitars.

The First Jockies.

Trains and Whiskey.

I like it.

Damn that Avante, how does he do that? I copy a big long list of black rasslers and he adds to it, damn! While all I can do is my dumb kid routine. Is there anything the guy doesn't know? And, he does it so quickly. Amazing!

I do get a kick out of the little know nothings here, hahahaha!

The first pro rasslin' champ was George Hackenschmidt in 1904 in the NWA, He was one of the most powerfully built humans on earth at that time. But it was Ed "Strangler" Lewis who gets the...first important rassler....respect. He won his first world title in 1920, his last in 1931, losing in 1933.

The great Lou Thesz showing up a few years later.

Now add Jim Landos and you have a pretty good idea of the origins of the biz, Keeping it simple which is a must here.

Blind Lemon Pie was born Willie Monroe in Ava Missouri. By 14 he was playing harmonica and piano in brothels in St.Louis. He wasn't born blind, he lost his sight gradual starting around 10. He's best known for writing...Hot Custad Pie...in 1931. Why he didn'r record it..??? Jellyroll Anderson had a huge hit with it. Canned Heat did a cover in the late 60's.

Blind Lemon stayed close to home, his famous 1930 recording session in Grafton Indiana only time he strayed from Missouri. Obviously the classic...My Baby Loves Lemon Pie....was recorded at that session since it was the only time he recorded. His old 78's on the Black Patti*** label are some of the most sought out by collectors than anyone.

***A label that only recorded blacks, they only issued 1200 records before going under. So those 1200 are very very rare.

Jellyroll Anderson started out in a jug band in Memphis. They called themselves the Kansas City Strummers. Which was kinda weird since all of the four were from Mobile Alabama. Jellyroll was known for stealing others material. He was actually shot and killed on his porch in Mobile in 1934. Why he was shot....hmmm?

Jellyroll on the far right.

The Jelly Roll was invented when Hams Groundwater had just spread jam on his toast but had to leave quicly as he was tardy for a gig. He rolled the toast up into a cylinder and stashed in a round tin made for huge joints. Upon arriving at the gig, he quickly consumed the invention, got high, and proceeded to belt out one of the greatest operas of the early Devonian period.

Later he admitted his discovery, and the entire city of Lattimore Missusup got stoned and rolled jellied toast, but none sang an opera. The Barbershop Triplet was synthesized from this event however.

Big John Stud.

Big John Stud grew up just outside Atlanta in a little town named Ducor. His dad Big Bill Studd was a preacher. He taught Big John how to play the organ. That's how he got into rasslin'.

Jim Crockett who owned Crockett Promotions out of Atlanta went to a wedding at Big Blls church there in Ducor, he couldn't help but notice the 6-6 (at that time) 300 pound Studd behind the piano.

See ya learned something.
