View Full Version : U.S. Basketball is still a mess and McHone an a**hole
Look what was published today in Argentina regarding
US and Brazil match.

The same arrogance
US coach gave order to play physical.
Mo McHone, US coach, revealed himself as a man without manners and a bad looser at the end of the defeat vs. Brazil in semifinals. In a timeout that was heard in ESPN DEPORTES only for US, he asked his players to play harder ( physical ) although the score difference ( 85-62 at 35' ) did not give any chance of winning. Noel Felix obbey and other followed. The consequences were a lip cut to Guilherme, who left the court with blood in his mouth. Leandrinho, PG of the Suns timidly said to McHone "Coach, it wasn't necesary to play that physically" and the American asked "Who the hell are you to tell me what to do. Go to hell ( the article says shit but it doesn't sound English ) and enjoy the win because the Dream Team is going to beat your asses", he said out of place. After that he insulted Brazilian coach Lula, until they were separated before going to locker room. Jerry Colangelo, chief of US Basket, did not see the show because he returned three days ago, in many ways disapointed by the level and compromise of the players. He also said that in Japan there will be an NBA team, although it is not known who is going to play....

My Spanish is so so but the gist of it I get is when USA was getting their butts kicked by Brazil McHome instructed them to "play with more force" which Felix complied with by blooding a Brazilian's lip who had to leave the floor. Leandrinho told McHone "coach it's not necessary to play so hard" to which McHome repsonded "go step in shit and enjoy this win because the dream team is going to kick your asses". Way to represent asshole.

Sorry, I'm going to call bullshit on this article. There's no way Noel followed any orders to hurt someone intentionally. He was complaining to me early in this tournament of the hard/dirty play of the Canadian team and how they were intentionally trying to hurt the U.S. players -- there's no way he turned around and did the same thing, no matter what McHone might have said.
I'll call him later today when they get home and ask him.

Obviously I didn't see the game but it's possible that McHone just said play harder and Noel unintentionally got someone in the mouth. The disturbing part to me, if true, is the way a coach of a USA basketball team responded to an opposing player. Total lack of class.

Well Kori, I don't think he is going to come out and say "yeah, I bloodied someone's lip because coach told me to. Anyway, the article is criticizing the coach more than the players. Supposedly there is a recording of what the coach said. I haven't actually seen it though. So I'm not sure if its true or not. I will say this though, Ole is a respectable magazine, they wouldn't be making this kind of things up.

I would sure love a link to that article gus, because I'm reading Ole online and there is nothing about this.

Yeah he would say that if that's the case.
You have no idea how close of friends we are. I know things about the Fresno State athletic program from when he went to school there, that I wish I didn't know. Believe me, if he did it at all, he'll tell me.
I understand that it's not bashing the players and I know McHone is an asshole if he told his players to hurt people. I'm just saying that it likely didn't go down how this article paints it.

I didn't know you were such close friends. Well if you know him well, and you say he couldn't have done it, then I'll take your word for it. Personally, I'm more concerned as to the way the coach conducted himself. The playing physically part isn't that big a deal. At least not to me.

ManuMania, you can find it under the More Information (Mas Informacion) section on the right of the article titled "Una Revancha?"
Kori, I wold not be surprised if part of the article was BS.
For starters, how can the sportswriter know for sure that Noel hitting the Brazilian was on purpose?
What McHone said could have been true, and if he did say it, he is truly a A-hole, but other things in the article could be simple assumptions.

And if you want to know exactly what McHone said - he'll tell me that too. I'm sure he won't shy away from criticizing McHone if McHone said any of that. Noel and I have talked almost every single day for the last 15 months - he's one of my best friends. I wasn't in as close contact with him when he was in the Dominican because he didn't have an international cell phone with him, but I talked to him last night a little bit on email.
really? Cool
I right the sidebar columns in Ole' newspaper every month or so. I also wrote an article for that NBA season preview edition of the magazine last year - the one with that scantily clad girl on the cover.

So for the people who asked here above is the link.
Anyway, although Ole is serious, I do not like the reporter (Marcelo Nogueira), but in fact he is quoting what was said and taped...so it would be nice if Kori check with Noel the information and if it was true.
Please I do not want anyone to feel offended, but I posted what it was published.

When he gets home, I'll ask him exactly what McHone said. I'm not doubting the paper that McHone said that -- and if he did, he's definitely an asshole.

Noel said that it wasn't him who bloodied the lip of the Brazilian guy. He said that McHone did tell them to play more physical and they did. As for what McHone said to Barbosa, Noel said he didn't hear it exactly but he knew that he had said something to him.
Sorry, not very informational.

Wow now that is an oxymoron if I've ever seen one.
