ESPN.com has included Spurs legend Tim Duncan in its selection of the 20 best athletes (http://espn.go.com/espn/story/_/page/Anniversary-Top20Athletes/20th-anniversary-top-20-athletes) over the past 20 years in honor of its 20th anniversary.
Duncan was chosen 14th, an honor considering he placed ahead of such luminaries as Usain Bolt (16th) and Floyd Mayweather Jr. But he was also placed behind the likes of Shaquille O'Neal (11th), Kobe Bryant (8th) and LeBron James (2nd), players that Duncan can be debated to stand ahead of in a pure ranking of NBA players.
See the sports network's full list in the gallery above.
But this is where style undoubtedly comes into play, something Duncan has had less than zero interest in during his 18-year career. While he's toiled outside the spotlight in the small-market confines of his adopted hometown, gladly keeping his interaction with the media to a bare medium, the aforementioned three were all commercial powerhouses, to the point where player and brand were virtually indivisible.
Undoubtedly this will rile up any natives who still hold onto the inferiority complex even after the national lovefest that was last year's Spurs championship run. That calls for a lead from Duncan: If he doesn't care, neither should you.
