SAN ANTONIO the other side of the door Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Kawhi Leonard shaken. On this side Gregg Popovich's screams are heard. Everything is heard and seen nothing, because you are not allowed to observe what happens in there, in training San Antonio. Although not all are transpiring Spurs. Manu Ginobili (http://canchallena.lanacion.com.ar/manu-ginobili-t32953) is dropped on a cushion that are so fluffy, could fagocitarse to any mortal. From the other side, insistent, the bounce of the ball. The best Argentine basketball player in history brings a pair of socks with the logo of the NBA. Just remove them after training. On the other hand, a huge cell white and blue headphones like rubber. Dressed in shorts and shirt, relaxing on the Manu is home for almost 13 years.
"Did you get well? It is a little removed this part of the city." He dominates the scene, is the host. Mitch, one of the assistants Tom James, the press officer Spurs notes that everything is in order, warns that there are drinks in the fridge and removed. Manu relaxing, playing with his beard, at this point in the season quite dense, and immersed in the talk.
While the topics flow, surely reflects on the Spurs in the NBA. It is relaxed. Until you mentioned the selection and the light of your face takes another force. Manu will not escape anything, it is overwhelming. It fits over and over again on the cushion and accompanies his words with his hands to try to explain something that is not easy to explain: the feeling that says goodbye to one of his loves, sweatshirt Argentina.
- Sergio Hernandez said there'll be in Monterrey, but perhaps there was any chance that you're in Rio 2016. Can you say something about it now?
- When they asked me, I kept thinking if I had said last year when he was the World, who wanted not to end my relationship with the team. In my head I had closed that chapter. Because, well, I could not play the World Cup, I regretted not being able to be, but then said that 98% (as of retirement) I guess there have emerged that excites people. Inside I had retired me. The selection is so ingrained in me, because I started in 96 with the lowest, costing me close one chapter and say that's it, no more and no play chances of a return to wear the shirt of the selection. It is deep inside me and it's hard. I love to keep that dream alive playing an Olympic Game, but the reality is that the chance is negligible because I no longer leather. Every day, every game, I have to do a lot of things to get to the stadium, everything hurts .. Ya competition and every day lost some meaning and although I'm passionate when I'm on the pitch, basketball is not the first thing on my list of priorities. Therefore, the two or three months that I have vacation, plus the pains that I have, make that selection is not my priority. I do not feel well and do not want to go for pity or going to suffer. The selection is to have fun, to give all you have and today I am unable to do that. The truth is that I was surprised that I need to clarify, but certainly in Monterrey will not be. I had no doubt about that, but clearly left the door open unconsciously.
- A few days ago Scola said today in selecting the proper names was not important, he had to do a project for 10 years. Do you think the same?
- What to put together a project to 10 or 20 years and sanitize our basketball for the future, no doubt. I think it's good some of us who are left for youth or newer or those without much rubbing NBA, can see some of the things they were doing. See how Luis (Scola) moves or how Pablo (Prigioni), which is a tremendous example is handled. Or see how Chapu (Nocioni) or the constancy of Carlitos (Delfino) and his fight against that foot train and what it does to be (N. of R .: takes two years without playing through injury). I think that serves as a mirror, not to copy, but to know that there are those forms. There are things we were learning, they did not know existed. It is very important. But it is only a moment in which the selection depends on Ginobili, Scola, Prigioni or Nocioni. It is important to maintain the behavior, that kind of altruism, of feeling, gaming and more. Then you have to organize everything else from the base, because I think it was quite hurt.
- How can you solve the problem of bases?
- Gradually, involving us all. And when I say this is for players, coaches, referees. All we have to push looking for a common good. Fail in many aspects of our country, we will try it happens in basketball. Leaving aside personal interests and try to do things together and see what happens.See if we can do it.
- It seems that everything we achieved with the Golden Generation was not known exploit. Do you see it?
- It is very difficult to say no advantage because you can not determine how they could have used. I dunno. Definitely things were really bad. It is possible that things could have been done from the ground, I do not know what the solution was. But when we learned last year in what was the economic and structural situation of the Confederation certainly things were really bad. Knowing that are below 30 million pesos, with a selection that did not travel in private jets everywhere .. I guess something should have generated no? Since 2002 runner-up to fourth place in London, something should have been generated. And it did not happen. You say, how can that be? And so do you feel a little accomplice. Because we had been complaining to us for some time, but there were too many things happening. But hey, passed, we are all responsible, from the top to the bottom. Hopefully rebuild everything and we are all from the same side. But like any crisis, when it is very deep, invites reset and plant the seeds of new and made laburar. And they all put in the same way for encarrilar this. .

Basically he's saying how much credit the team deserves for playing so well without a true point guard. Then he talks about hoping to one day again being able to stomp in the rain and dance among the rainbows while dressed in his super cape. Something like that,

Manu Ginóbili: “I don’t feel good and I don’t want to go suck”
By Diego Morini | canchallena.com

SAN ANTONIO.- On the other side of the door Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Kawhi Leonard sound agitated. On this side you can hear Gregg Popovich screaming. You can hear everything, but see nothing, because we’re not allowed to observe what’s going on inside, during the San Antonio practice session. Not all Spurs are sweating. Manu Ginobili let’s himself drop into a couch so soft it could swallow up any human being. On the other side, inconsistent, the ball bouncing. The best Argentinean basketball player of all time has some socks with the NBA logo in them. He just took them off after practice. In his other hand, a huge white cellular phone and blue headphones that look made out of rubber. Dressed with some shorts and a t-shirt, Manu relaxes in what’s been his home for the past 13 years.

“Did you get lost? This place is a bit away from the city”. He dominates the scene, he’s the host. Mitch, of the assistants of the PR head Tom James, makes sure everything is in order, let us know there are drinks in the fridge and walks away. Manu relaxes, plays with his beard, which is pretty big at this stage of the season, and submerges himself into the interview.

While the topics come and go, he never stops thinking about the Spurs’ season in the NBA. Until the national team is mentioned, at which point his face changes. Manu doesn’t dodge anything, he’s upfront. He accommodates himself over and over on the couch, and gestures while he explains something that’s not easy to explain: the sensations of saying goodbye to one of his loves, the Argentina NT jersey.

- Sergio Hernandez said you are not going to be in Monterrey, but perhaps there was some chance that you could make it to Rio 2016. Can you say anything about that at this time?

- When I was asked about it, I started thinking if I didn’t say last year when the whole World championship happened, that I didn’t want to finish my chapter with the NT that way. In my head, that was a closed chapter in my career. But well, I couldn’t play that tournament, I was sorry I couldn’t make it, but then I said that thing about the 98% (about retiring from the NT) that I suppose could’ve made people have some expectations. To me, the NT was a done deal. The NT is something that’s so deep, because I started in 1996 with the junior team, that it’s tough to close the chapter and say “that’s it, I won’t play anymore, and there’s not a chance I’ll wear that jersey anymore”. It’s a feeling inside of me, and it’s tough. I would love to keep alive that dream of playing another Olympic Games, but the reality is that the odds are very, very small, because my body can’t take it anymore. Every day, every game, I have to do a ton of stuff just to get to the games, everything hurts… The competition and day to day somewhat lost it’s meaning, and even though I’m as passionate as ever when I step into the court, basketball is no longer at the top of the list in my priorities. That’s why, the two or three months of vacations I have, plus all the pain I carry with me from a long season, make it impossible for me to prioritize the NT. I don’t feel good, and I don’t want to go suck or to suffer. The NT is a place you go have a great time, to give it everything you have, and nowadays I’m just not capable of doing that. I honestly was surprised I had to explain that, but without a doubt I won’t be in Monterrey. I never had a doubt about that, but it’s also clear I unconsciously left the door open.

- A few days ago Scola said that big names in the NT was not important, that it needs a 10 year project. Do you agree?

- We certainly have to put together a 10 or 20 year project and heal our current basketball structure for the future, no doubt. I think it’s good some of us are still around so the younger kids, or the newer kids, or the guys that never had an NBA experience can see some of the things that need to be done. Watch how Luis (Scola) moves, how Pablo (Prigioni) commands a team, it’s a hell of an example. Or maybe watch how Chapu (Nocioni) trains or how perseverant is Carlitos (Delfino) and his fight with that foot injury and the sacrifices he does to be with the team (he’s not played for 2 years due to the foot injury and multiple surgeries). I think that works as a mirror they can use, not to copy, but to learn that there’s a certain way to do things. There are things we learned, that we didn’t know existed. It’s very important. But it’s no longer a NT that depends on Ginobili, Scola, Prigioni or Nocioni. It’s just important to maintain that professionalism, that altruism if you will, that feeling for the NT, the game, and so forth. Other than that, we need to organize the whole structural side of things from the beginning, because I think it’s severely damaged.

- How do you solve that problem, the structural problem?

- Slowly, everybody being involved. And by everybody I mean players, coaches, referees. We all need to push towards a common goal. It doesn’t work out like that in a lot of aspects in our country, but we’ll try that it happens in basketball. Leave personal interests on the sidelines, try to do things all together and see what happens. See if we can do it.

- There’s a sensation that everything that the Golden Generation achieved went to waste. Do you see it like that?

- It’s very difficult to say that it all went to waste because it’s hard to determine how you could’ve taken advantage of it. I don’t know. There are some things that were certainly done very badly. It’s possible that some things could’ve been done on the structural side, but I don’t know what the solution to that was. But when we found out last year what was the current economic and structural situation of the Confederation, there’s no doubt management was really bad. You learn they owed $30m with a national team that didn’t travel in private jets everywhere… I suppose we made some money for them, right? From the 2nd place in 2002 until the 4th place in London you would think some money was made. And it didn’t happen. And you think, how could that be? And you even feel a bit like an accomplice. Because we’ve been complaining about that situation for a while, but there were just too many things going on. But well, it happened, we’re all responsible, from top to bottom. We’re hoping to rebuild this and that everyone is on the same page. Just like any crisis, when it’s very deep, it invites to rebuild, plant a new seed, and getting to work. And that everybody get on the same road to straighten this out.

Manu doesn't speak any dialect. It is Spanish my dear illiterate. Perhaps you would've had a better translation if you had translated it to Russian and Chinese first.

Manu liked the rainbow, cap and colors, but, of course, not as much as you.

Sounds a whole lot like Manu's thinking he's got 5 regular season games left in his career and whatever number of playoff games the Spurs can muster this spring.

Reading that, I'd be very surprised if he played beyond this season.

EDIT: saw elsewhere that he's said he likely won't play past 2016, so maybe I'm being too skeptical of his willingness to tolerate that sort of pain to endure another season.

Got to be a tough decision for him. As much as he loves to play, I don't think he'd be satisfied if he couldn't actually make a contribution. I can see him quitting after this season and using the 2016 comment as something to avoid the extra attention. But hopefully, he's got one more year in him.
