View Full Version : What if our redemption story isn't over yet?

The Finals collapse to the Heat 2 years ago was devestating. It was devestating to me as a fan, I mean, I couldn't watch or read anything NBA that summer. I can't imagine what it was like for them. Especially Manu Ginobili and Kawhi Leonard that missed crucial freethrows. Tim Duncan, that missed that bunny at the end of game 7.
They redeemed themselves last year. That goes without saying. It made, for me, last year even sweeter. Brought tears watching replays of those games and their elation, celebration, Coach Popovich wiping away tears.
But...what if that story of redemption isn't over yet? This is the same rotation of guys. That hunger was quenched for me, whatever happens this year happens, I am happy with last year's triumph. But what if they are still driven by that motivation? I never thought of that until recently. Maybe those demons are still pushing them. I don't even want to consider what a back-to-back title would mean.

Consider that the Spurs are a bullshit shot and a stupid foul away from probably having 7 titles right now, including a FIVE-peat from 2003-2007.

They've openly acknowledged (at least some of them have) that last year's hunger has been unsustainable this season. They could still hit a stride during the postseason and win it all again, they're certainly talented enough and the system is still capable of putting opponents through the wood chipper. I think, though, you look at two of the key wins in last year's playoffs - Game 4 against Dallas, Game 6 against OKC - those are games that could have tilted each series in a dramatically different direction. Going down 3-1 to Dallas, coming home for a winner take all Game 7 against OKC. Last year's run featured a lot of unstoppable basketball but it also hinged on a few moments that required a team with championship resolve.
There's no telling how this team will fare in this title defense. But every round they advance through, they're going to find themselves, inevitably, in a must-win situation in a hostile environment. Whether or not Mills can drain some key threes or Ginobili can make that ONE PLAY to turn the tide remains to be seen in a title defense run.

Nothing will top the title last year, not even a repeat.

It's not really a redemption story anymore, that chapter is finished, tbh..
The final step in the Spurs run is to repeat, which will force everybody to acknowledge that it has been a dynasty(not that I care, and I doubt Pop/Tim/Manu/TP care)..that's the only storyline IMO..

I'm not sure about Pop....but I think Tim, Tony, and Manu definitely care. They know that's the one ding against an otherwise sterling record that they've had together. They've had 4 chances (well, 3 for Parker and Ginobili) and never been able to get the job done...I think they'll be ready for it this time.

They will do what they will do. As a fan, I'll take whatever they've got in them; after last year, they're entitled to that acceptance.
I do think that that laser focus that defined so much of 2013-14 was unsustainable over the long haul of the following season, and that results in their record being something less than many might have expected when that truth is compounded with: (1) the target affixed to their backs as champions; (2) a spate of key injuries in the early part of the season; and (3) the absolutely brutal December schedule.
With that said, though, this team has struggled for long portions of this season and has lost or given away a number of games that were winnable in the last possession, and still will likely end up in the mid-50's in wins. That's pretty remarkable.

So, cute dynasty you got there, how about you repeat a few times.

Yeah...2014 was the fucking mountaintop for me as a Spurs fan...even sweeter than 1999.
We followed that up with yet another 50+ win season and a playoff spot. All the rest is gravy, baby! :hat

So, shitty team you got there. Too bad you can't win titles without superteams.

2007 was redemption for 2006, I think that was the one time we actually got incredibly lucky in a playoff run, If we won the year before, I dont know if we get it done. That Suns series took so much going right to win, (Game 1 Nash bloody nose forcing him out in a tie game, Game 4 suspensions for Game 5 which we trailed the whole game until Bowen hit a clutch 3 with under a minute left), not to mention GS knocking out Dallas in round 1.

That shit still bugs me when I think about it honestly. Oh and 0.4 shouldn't have counted obviously.

Can't even make the playoffs in the East without a superteam.

What makes you think '04 is a guaranteed title if we got past the Lakers? I could see Spurs beating the Wolves that year but I'm not liking their chances vs the Pistons. '04 Spurs didn't have a legit 2nd option(Parker was terrible). A better version of Parker got destroyed by Chauncey in the Finals a year later. '04 Parker would get crushed hard in that possible matchup. That team would need a '05 Manu type player in the backcourt to stand a chance in the Finals. 2004 Manu wasn't ready to take over games yet.
