Could homeless Hornets be heading to Vegas?

Unfortunately, sometimes it requires a tragedy such as the ramifications of Hurricane Katrina to put life in perspective and pull people together.

And once again, it reminds us that sports remain the only walk of life that brings millions of people together in a positive atmosphere without necessitating a catastrophe or religious epiphany. It's just about the games and positive vibes they create.

1. Katrina has not only affected the lives of millions of people for now and the foreseeable future, but has chased the New Orleans Hornets to Colorado Springs for training camp and sites unseen for home games in the 2005-06 season, with offers from Oklahoma City, Nashville and San Diego already on the table.

What this really means: The devastation of the storm continues to mount, deputy commissioner Russ Granik already sent out an e-mail to the 29 other teams to prepare for the games with the Hornets to be elsewhere. Doesn't Las Vegas seem inevitable for both the short and long term? And wouldn't such a move be more logical than forcing them into the already tapped out arena at the LSU campus for an unspecified amount of time?

What is heartening has been the way some of the NBA players immediately stepped up to help. The Milwaukee Bucks have already donated $500,000 through various organizations, former Hornets guard Baron Davis, now with the Golden State Warriors, immediately wrote a check for $50,000 to the Red Cross. Gilbert Arenas bought reams of goods and supplies, delivering them to an armory in Washington D.C., where hundreds of displaced people will land shortly. Gulf Coast natives on the Indiana Pacers — Jonathan Bender and Danny Granger — have both welcomed friends and family to come live in Indianapolis and countless other players and the league have opened their arms and wallets to help provide relief.
