View Full Version : Tim Duncan stat, defying time

Tim had a 29 points, 10 rebounds, 3 blocks line on Friday night against Houston. At age 38. I wondered how many times that happened in the history of the NBA. The answer is: not many.

IIRC that POR game was a 3OT game....

Not saying that it isn't still impressive at his age....but he did have basically 5 quarters to do it.

Timmy is like my favorite fantasy character, Druss Deathwalker. Doesn't give a fuck about age, still murdering people like a badass even in his "retirement" age.

43 minutes played. Still within what some players play on a regular game. But definitely more than what he usually plays. I'm imagine it's hard to be spending so much time on the floor at age 38...

Yeah 43 minutes is a lot more than he would normally play. Again, still impressive for a guy who is older than dirt...

I think Duncan, besides being great, is more competitive than many fans realize. He has that in common with Jordan, a deep desire to win and the ability to do what it takes. It might be a character flaw on a personal level, but that intense competitive fire is what separates the great from the greatest. We all know those people that have to win everything, even if their playing video games with a child. It can be kind of annoying in real life, but for athletes, that's what you want.

Were Kareem and Malone close to this good at this age? I remember Kareem really faded his last year, but was good the year before. Neither of them were still this good defensively.

Timmy may be in uncharted waters.

Kareem was 42 when he retired though. Malone was 41 or 42.

I think there's an argument to be made that in his own way, Duncan is MORE competitive than a Jordan or Kobe because winning matters more to him than being "the man."

Those guys were fierce, almost insane competitors. But they also had such huge egos, that they would sabotage their own team's overall performance because they had to be the main option on that team. Duncan wants to contribute, and lead, but recognizes that it doesn't have to always be through usage and numbers of shots. He wants to win, period.

Yep, tbh..

And while I agreed with Kobe taking all the money he could, taking that contract ended his "winning over everything" reputation..

I don't do all-time lists anymore, tbh, too many variables to compare players in different eras..

For this generation, I'd go:

1. Duncan
2. Shaq
3. Lebron

for this generation you cannot go wrong with duncan shaq and Lebron then probably kobe

51 pts, 20 rbds, 6 assts, 5 blocks in the last 2 games for 38-year (soon to be 39-year old), big fundamental .

Duncan/ Ginobili / Parker's 539th win.
A win away to TiE Bird/McHale/ Parish record. :toast:

Asked if he got a word from the president of the AARP when he tumbled into a couple of WWII vets in the front row during the game :

DUNCAN : 'I've been accepted? "

Exactly. Timmy is just as competitive, but far more strategic (and insidious) than those guys.
