Jameis Winston (USA TODAY Sports)

Multiple league sources told Yahoo Sports that Winston scored a 27 out of 50 on the league's general aptitude test that is administered at the annual NFL scouting combine prior to the draft. That's a respectable score for quarterbacks, and just one point shy of the 28 Manning scored prior to the 1998 draft. It also stacks up favorably with several recent Super Bowl winners, including the New Orleans Saints (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/nor/)' Drew Brees (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/5479/) (28), the Seattle Seahawks (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/sea/)' Russell Wilson (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/25785/) (28), the Baltimore Ravens (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/bal/)' Joe Flacco (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/8795/) (27) and the Pittsburgh Steelers (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/pit/)' Ben Roethlisberger (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/6770/) (25).

While Wonderlic scores are becoming less relevant in draft equations, they still carry weight at some decision-making positions such as quarterback, an AFC personnel source told Yahoo Sports.

But it certainly doesn't guarantee NFL success. For example, former first-round pick Blaine Gabbert (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/24797/) scored a very impressive 42 on the test and has struggled mightily in the NFL.

"[The Wonderlic] is a smaller piece now than it used to be, but it's generally helpful when it comes to some positions," the source said. "It's kind of a guardrail – a score doesn't tell you the whole story about a player, but at times it can tell you if there's something you might need to look at more closely. … For me, it becomes important if it's wild, like, way off what I'm expecting.

"If it's 15 points lower than the norm, then that requires some research."

Winston's score falling into line with other accomplished NFL starters shouldn't be a surprise. He received academic All-ACC honors in 2013 and 2014 at Florida State and was also accepted into Stanford during his recruiting process. Winston ultimately chose Florida State over the Cardinal.

Some of the highest scores from other prominent and successful NFL starting QBs include the Indianapolis Colts (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/ind/)' Andrew Luck (37), the Green Bay Packers (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/gnb/)' Aaron Rodgers (35), the New England Patriots (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/nwe/)' Tom Brady (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/5228/) (33) and the San Diego Chargers (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/sdg/)' Philip Rivers (30).

How many Heisman winners have come out of the military academies?

Who was the first Dallas Cowboy to rush for a 1000 yards in a season? Try Calvin Hill Yale.

Who was the daddy of all those Raiders speedsters? Try Bo Roberson a 1960 Olympic silver medalist in the long jump and a 9.4 sprinter while at Cornell.

Who was a world record holder in the indoor 60? That would be Ben Johnson out of Columbia.

Who was the last white sprinter to run on a USA Olympic 4x1 team? That would be Dartmouths Gerry Ashworth.

Ever heard of Penns John Haines? How about Wendell Mottley out of Yale?

Who won the Olympic 100m in 1900? Try Princetons Frank Jarvis.

Wrong as usual.

Back then, it was looked upon as a real honor to be in the service academy. Even kids from elite families would join. Things changed after the Vietnam war.

Wonderlic scores means something, no matter the position.. except maybe to a punter or kicker, but then again look at Martin Gramatica..takes a rare type of idiot to break your leg on a weak celebration.

I wonder if Mo' Claiborne still thinks it ain't shit that he scored a mother fucking 6 on his, dismissing the results because "ain't nothin' on there bout no football" :lol fucking idiot. Vince Young was another of the Wonderlic idiots, and look at that guy.. fucking janitor at UT iirc.

I'm just worried about my franchise spurraider.....plain and simple. Screwing up the #1 pick can set your franchise back years....

You say..."forget the off-field stuff"....I wish I could. I certainly think he's a better pro prospect than Manziel last year and Mariota this year. Better in the pocket...already runs a pro style offense...and an overall bigger/stronger arm than those two. I'm not saying he can't overcome this off-field nonsense...It just bothers me to say the least.

My concern is Tampa being in his hometown/FSU backyard. So he'll have his homeboys around. I have no doubts if he were allowed to ease into the job in a different region of the league, he would be successful.

With that said thank goodness it's not Oakland. Even Luck would have struggles there

Look at all the elite QBs: all except Peyton joined competitive franchises and most sat on bench

99% of the help I received was not from professors. It was from other students in my class. We had a "lounge" for Civil Engineers only. If you weren't in Civil Engineering...your ID wouldn't allow you in the building. We all had little groups we would work in....and If we all were confused on a problem...one of us would go ask the professor (if it was his/her office hours). If your point is sports have no place in the Ivy League or military academies. I agree

I guess you'd be fine without David Robinson and Pop then. Bill Bradley? Coaches like Chuck Daly / Digger Phelps / JT3.

Ivy basketball has been very strong in the NCAAs recently - a Sweet 16 run, perennial wins in the tournament and until a few years ago the last non-major conference to place a team in the Final Four (Penn in '79). Much more of a place for Ivy sports than most of the other leagues and the kids who don't turn pro actually can get a real job.

Jason Garrett (Princeton) and Ryan Fitzpatrick (Harvard) shouldn't ruin it for everyone! Linsanity was fun for a while and Harvard has been even better since he graduated.

And if you're going to talk about the Heisman trophy, don't forget where Heisman played and coached (Penn). Outland Trophy? Bednarik Trophy? All the same.

brady wasn't fat. ben and romo are mobile. jameis isn't. it's especially concerning for a guy who has character concerns

russell was bad because he was a lazy, fat, inaccurate, unathletic fuck who had zero passion for the game and zero interest in ever improving.

calling jamarcus russell a racial term is an insult to blacks

You don't watch the colege game do you? Jamis Winston is very mobile.

Do sacks count as negative rushing yards in college? Well what I mean is does this chart (Rushing yard stats) factor in his sacks too?

no, sacks are a separate stat.

Damn...that makes his rushing totals look even shittier.

I was originally on the "I don't want Winston" bandwagon....then I was talked off the bandwagon....now I think I'm back on.

jameis is a pocket passer. I don't know why his rushing stats are being brought up.

Compare Winston to Peyton Manning/Eli Manning/Dan Marino/Dan Fouts not RGIII/Vick/Russell Wilson. He can run if need be and he can evade rushers. No he's no great runner, but he is mobile.

Marino might have had the quickest releash ever. And he did have a good feel for where the rush was coming from and where to "step" he was not mobile at all however.

Dude's also been mobile as hell. This is the first time since 2010 that Tampa could feel like their QB could actually win them some games.

and tampa is approaching it the right way. he has weapons in the pass game, they have a good ground game. they need to continue to invest in the oline... but winston looks good

They have invested in their line a lot recently. The second and third picks (both second-rounders) were used on their starting LT and LG. Their center was a big free-agent acquisition two seasons ago, and their RG is Login Makins. Dotson/Cherilus seems like a good situation at RT as well. I could see them investing one more high pick to push Mankins or Smith for a starting spot or acquire a blue-chip LT to move Donovan Smith inside (and give Marpit more time to learn).

Really, it would be nice if they picked up a edge-rusher who isn't a JAG and who could compliment their DTs. Could also use some secondary guys. I consider adding more talent to the defense to be at least as big of a priority as the O-line now.
