Ted Cruz: GOP Presidential Candidate's Spokesman Apologizes for 'Inaccurate' Marco Rubio Video

Spokesman Rick Tyler apologized on Facebook Monday after sharing a video of Rubio holding a bible with a subtitle misquoting him as saying "Got a good book there, not many answers in it."

· 13 hrs · Houston (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Houston-Texas/115963528414384) ·

I want to apologize to Senator Marco Rubio for posting an inaccurate story about him here earlier today.

The story showed a video of the Senator walking past a Ted Cruz staffer seated in the lobby of a hotel reading his Bible.

The story misquoted a remark the Senator made to the staffer.

I assumed wrongly that the story was correct.

According to the Cruz staffer, the Senator made a friendly and appropriate remark.

Since the audio was unclear, I should not have assumed the story was correct.

I've deleted the post because I would not knowingly post a false story. :lol

But the fact remains that I did post it when I should have checked its accuracy first. I regret the mistake

The guy created a video which he must have thought aligned with Cruz.

How Could This Happen?

Shake-up in the Cruz campaign gives you the sense (http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/ted-cruz-rick-tyler-resigns) that Cruz creates a milieu of petty viciousness, dishonesty and casual malignity around himself.

The literati sent out their minions to do their bidding. Washington cannot tolerate threats from outsiders who might disrupt their comfortable world. The firefight started when the cowardly sensed weakness. They fired timidly at first, then the sheep not wanting to be dropped from the establishment’s cocktail party invite list unloaded their entire clip, firing without taking aim their distortions and falsehoods. Now they are left exposed by their bylines and handles. But surely they had killed him off. This is the way it always worked. A lesser person could not have survived the first few minutes of the onslaught. But out of the billowing smoke and dust of tweets and trivia emerged Gingrich, once again ready to lead those who won’t be intimated by the political elite and are ready to take on the challenges America faces.

Behind Ted Cruz’s Campaign Manager, Scorched Earth and Election Victories

For weeks, the labels have hung over Ted Cruz (http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/us/elections/ted-cruz-on-the-issues.html?inline=nyt-per)’s presidential campaign like dirty laundry: Deceitful. Cynical. Willing to do anything to win.
The attacks from Mr. Cruz’s Republican rivals have challenged his core campaign promises of integrity and conservative purity, cresting on Monday when he dismissed his communications director (http://www.nytimes.com/politics/first-draft/2016/02/22/ted-cruz-fires-top-aide-for-spreading-misinformation-on-marco-rubio/), Rick Tyler, for spreading a misleading video about Marco Rubio (http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/us/elections/marco-rubio-on-the-issues.html?inline=nyt-per)’s views on the Bible.

“There is a culture in the Cruz campaign, from top to bottom,” a Rubio spokesman said, “that no lie is too big and no trick too dirty.”

his campaign has conspicuously reflected the brand of its principal architect: Jeff Roe, an operative with a reputation for scorching earth, stretching truths and winning elections.

But back home, Mr. Roe’s allies and opponents alike have seen a familiar imprint in the Cruz campaign’s recent exploits, which have included a Photoshopped image of Mr. Rubio (http://www.nytimes.com/politics/first-draft/2016/02/18/marco-rubios-campaign-accuses-ted-cruz-of-deceitful-altering-of-photo/) and the misleading suggestion, on the night of the Iowa caucuses, that Ben Carson was leaving the race (http://www.nytimes.com/politics/first-draft/2016/02/03/ben-carson-accuses-ted-cruzs-campaign-of-dirty-tricks-in-iowa/).

There was the time, in 2006, when Mr. Roe ran an ad flashing “XXX” to highlight a 63-year-old, wheelchair-using congressional candidate’s former employer’s association with Penthouse magazine. Mr. Roe’s candidate won.

Mr. Roe condemned the “San Francisco-style values” of another opponent in a 2008 ad featuring an ostentatiously dressed black man dancing with two women. Some criticized the spot as racist and homophobic. Mr. Roe’s candidate won.

“Jeff Roe does not know the difference between fact and fiction,” said Joe Brazil (http://www.sccmo.org/1354/Joe-Brazil---District-2), a county councilman in Missouri who unsuccessfully sued (http://www.stltoday.com/news/local/stcharles/judge-rejects-county-councilman-joe-brazil-s-defamation-suit/article_fc0b48b3-aa10-57d5-85f1-173e80478eb4.html) Mr. Roe for defamation after a 2006 blog post days before Mr. Brazil’s primary in a State Senate race.

The item focused on a sad event from Mr. Brazil’s youth, when, at 17, he killed a classmate in a dump-truck accident. Mr. Roe’s post suggested Mr. Brazil had consumed “quite a few beers.” But Mr. Brazil had not been drinking, the police said, and was not charged.

Mr. Cruz’s first experience with Mr. Roe came during his Senate run in Texas in 2012. Mr. Roe’s firm, working for Mr. Cruz’s opponent, produced a flier attacking Mr. Cruz’s legal work for a Chinese company.

http://mopns.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/m_roe.jpg

His first presidential work was for Mike Huckabee in 2008;

in 2012, he consulted for Rick Perry.

Days after he ran a radio ad mocking the physical appearance of Tom Schweich, a primary candidate for Missouri governor, by comparing him to Barney Fife, Mr. Schweich committed suicide.

Ted Cruz goes full Trump on immigration: Wall, forced deportations, 'jackboots,' and all (http://www.dailykos.com/stories/2016/2/23/1489729/-Ted-Cruz-goes-full-Trump-on-immigration-Wall-forced-deportations-jackboots-and-all)

Cruz told Fox News host Bill O'Reilly on Monday that yes, should he be elected president, his administration would deport all 12 million undocumented people estimated to be in the U.S. and wouldn't allow them to return.

"We should enforce the law ... federal law requires that anyone here illegally that's apprehended should be deported," Cruz said. "Of course" he'd look for undocumented immigrants, he said.

Cruz said America would build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, triple the border force and establish biometric entry systems "so we will know the day someone overstays their visa."

The Devil in Ted Cruz

But no, Cruz’s campaign would never question the faith of another candidate.

The Texas senator is some piece of double-talking, disingenuous work. While the so-called dirty tricks (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/02/20/us/politics/south-carolina-campaign-tricks.html) that he and his lieutenants have been charged with aren’t all that shocking by the standards of bruising presidential campaigns, they really do stand out in the context of Cruz’s flamboyant claims of rectitude and righteousness.

He directs you to his halo as he surreptitiously grabs a pitchfork. His rivals aren’t so diabolically hypocritical.

At a town hall in South Carolina that CNN televised, he answered a question about his miserable relations with fellow lawmakers in Washington by assuring voters that “it’s not that I speak with a lack of civility or respect.”

“The Bible talks about if someone treats you unkindly, repay them with kindness,” he added. “That has been the standard I’ve tried to follow. That’s how I’ve approached it in the Senate. So I have not attacked or insulted my colleagues in the Senate, Democrat or Republican.”

Is he suffering from delusions? Amnesia? On the Senate floor he called Mitch McConnell, the Republican majority leader, a liar. He also likened Senate Republicans who recognized the impossibility of defunding Obamacare to Nazi appeasers.

Where was his vaunted “civility or respect” when, on the heels of his election to the Senate in November 2012, he derided Mitt Romney’s failed presidential bid — to an audience including Romney supporters — by saying that during one presidential debate, “I’m pretty certain Mitt Romney actually French-kissed Barack Obama.”

And where was that “civility or respect” during subsequent Senate hearings to confirm Chuck Hagel as the secretary of defense? Cruz’s repeated suggestions that Hagel had been corrupted by money from America’s enemies were so out of bounds (http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/16/us/politics/ted-cruz-runs-counter-to-courtly-ways-of-the-senate.html)that senators from both parties were appalled.

Cruz continues to congratulate his campaign for its high-mindedness even though his allies and operatives spread an erroneous report, during the Iowa caucuses, that Ben Carson was dropping out of the race. And they had the niftiest bit of counsel for Carson voters. Switch to Cruz!

Then, in South Carolina, Cruz operatives doctored a photograph so that it showed Rubio shaking hands with President Obama in front of the United States Capitol.

These shenanigans profoundly contradict the godly styling of a candidate who was the first ever to announce a presidential campaign at Liberty University, the largest Christian university in the world, and who incessantly invokes the Bible, Jesus and morality.

And they surely reflect the campaign culture that Cruz has created. Political allies and aides tend to behave in a manner largely consistent with their boss’s directives and understood values.

Or they’re brought aboard a campaign because they behave that way. As Matt Flegenheimer reported (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/02/24/us/politics/ted-cruz-campaign-manager-jeff-roe.html) in The Times this week, Cruz hired a campaign manager, Jeff Roe, who is widely known for destructive gossip, for malicious tactics — and for winning.

Cruz Adviser: Liberals & Islamists Plan To 'Take Us Down' With Aid To Non-English Speakers

The Center for Security Policy’s Frank Gaffney was, until very recently, a bit of a pariah (http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/frank-gaffney-pariah-ted-cruz-adviser) in establishment GOP circles thanks to his obsessive quest to prove the Islamist infiltration of not only the Obama administration but also the Republican Party. But, as Brian noted (http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/frank-gaffney-pariah-ted-cruz-adviser) yesterday, that has changed dramatically in recent months as Republican presidential candidates have flocked to his primary campaign events, Donald Trump cited his group’s shoddy research in his call to ban Muslims from the country, and, most recently, Ted Cruz named him as a top national security adviser to his campaign (http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/ted-cruz-adds-birther-anti-muslim-conspiracy-theorist-his-campaign).

Despite all the new attention, Gaffney is still his same old self, pushing variations on his favorite theory that a “red-green axis” of progressives and Islamists are conspiring to destroy America with the enthusiastic support of a treasonous President Obama.

Gaffney returned to that theme in an interview (http://www.centerforsecuritypolicy.org/2016/03/07/chinas-bid-for-global-power/) earlier this month with Robert Vandervoort of the English-only group ProEnglish, in which he wondered if progressives are conspiring with Islamists to use government programs for people who aren’t proficient in English in order to “take us down.”

Cruz Adviser: Chicago Clashes Portend Violent Revolution By Islamists, Occupy Wall Street & Black Lives Matter

Frank Gaffney, the notorious anti-Muslim conspiracy theorist (http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/frank-gaffney-pariah-ted-cruz-adviser) who recently became one of Sen. Ted Cruz’s top national security advisers (http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/ted-cruz-announces-endorsement-jerry-boykin-anti-muslim-anti-gay-conspiracy-theorist), warned on his radio program last week that the violent clashes around a recent Donald Trump rally in Chicago are the harbinger of a violent revolution led by an alliance of Islamists, Occupy Wall Street, Black Lives Matter protesters, anarchists and “other assorted radicals on the left.”

Gaffney asked West about a new count (http://cis.org/61-Million-Immigrants-and-Their-Young-Children-Now-Live-in-the-United-States) from the anti-immigration Center for Immigration Studies showing that there are 61 million “immigrants and their American born children” currently living in the U.S. (That CIS counts “American-born children” — who are not immigrants — in its number is a classic sleight of hand (http://www.pfaw.org/rww-in-focus/anti-immigrant-lobby-white-nationalist-roots-organizations-fighting-immigration#thinktank)from the group.)

Gaffney asked West what that “stunning” report “means for the national identity.”

“Identity as any kind of a nation is not possible when there is no nation to identify with,” West lamented, saying that the population of immigrants and their families amounts to “population replacement.”

She then linked the Mexican-born population of Chicago with the clashes outside the Trump rally.

“I think Chicago becomes a very important example,” she said. “I had no idea until I started looking at the Chicago shutdown of the Trump rally last week that Chicago itself is almost as Hispanic as it is black, around 30 percent for both groups. However, one in five residents of Chicago is Mexican-born. I mean, this is a staggering kind of demographic change.

And, you know, when you have a politician who is discussing controlling that, building a wall with Mexico and so on, you see where we end up with these kinds of flashpoints. It’s not politics as usual because this is not our country as usual. I mean, we are in a state of flux, of crisis, of change that people have not been made aware of until this particular moment.”

Gaffney too saw a dire warning in the Chicago incident, saying that it represents a “coming together” of Islamists and social justice activists and “portends a very violent prospect, in fact a revolutionary one”:

But let’s talk about, specifically, the prospects — and I think the case in point at the moment, but not the only example, unfortunately, is that Chicago rally — of a coming together of, on the one hand, Islamists — Islamic supremacists if you will, the Muslim Brotherhood — and Black Lives Matter and Occupy movements and sort of anarchists and other assorted radicals on the left. And it seems as though … this coming together, this joining of forces, portends truly a very violent prospect, in fact a revolutionary one. Do you see it that way?

“Yes, it’s very possible, it’s very possible,” West responded. “You could look at Chicago as a dress rehearsal.”

Cruz’s ‘patrol and secure’ plan goes from bad to worse

There was some question yesterday as to whether Cruz may have been referring to “Muslim neighborhoods” abroad, but the senator soon after explained (https://twitter.com/KatyTurNBC/status/712359324790747136) that he was specifically talking about American communities on American soil.

NBC News reported (http://www.msnbc.com/msnbc/cruz-calls-police-patrol-and-secure-muslim-neighborhoods) that Cruz later clarified what he has in mind.

… Cruz explained his proposal to reporters on Tuesday night, saying it is “good law enforcement” to target neighborhoods that may be “festering jihadism.”

“It is standard law enforcement — it is good law enforcement to focus on where threats are emanating from, and anywhere where there is a locust of radicalization, where there is an expending presence of radical Islamic terrorism,” Cruz told reporters on Tuesday evening in Manhattan.

The Texas senator later compared his idea (http://www.msnbc.com/msnbc/cruz-calls-police-patrol-and-secure-muslim-neighborhoods) to ridding neighborhoods of gang activity and law enforcement’s efforts “to take them off the street.” Cruz added that there’s some precedent for what he has in mind: he pointed to (http://www.msnbc.com/msnbc/cruz-calls-police-patrol-and-secure-muslim-neighborhoods) the New York Police Department’s use of a “proactive policing program” under former Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Cruz’s original argument was bad. The clarification is worse.

Right off the bat, comparing law-abiding Americans, who’ve done nothing except remain in a faith tradition Ted Cruz is suspicious of, to gang members is ridiculous.

As for Cruz’s NYPD parallel, let’s not forget that the surveillance program the senator referred to never led to a single terrorist investigation (http://www.msnbc.com/msnbc/nypd-allowed-spy-muslim-americans) – ever – though it did lead to a series of credible lawsuits. In fact, NYPD Commissioner William Bratton spoke out (http://www.msnbc.com/msnbc/nypd-commissioner-condemns-ted-cruzs-proposal-patrols-muslim-communities) publicly yesterday to explain that Cruz has no idea what he’s talking about.

As for the bigger picture, there are two broad angles to keep in mind. The first is that targeting Muslim Americans, en masse, because of the actions of some lunatics abroad is plainly wrong. The United States isn’t supposed to act this way, and in the instances in our history which we’ve forgotten this, we now look back at those moments with shame, not pride.

But even if you don’t find that persuasive, and even if you’re unconcerned about principles and civil liberties, consider this from a purely practical perspective:

Ted Cruz believes the way to prevent radicalization of a religious minority is to discriminate against that religious minority through heavy-handed law enforcement tactics.

It’s hard to even imagine a more dangerously misguided approach to keeping Americans safe.

Ted Cruz’ Least Qualified, Biggest TX Scumbag Economic Advisor

“Some people look at subprime lending and see evil. I look at subprime lending and I see the American dream in action.”
— former (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/17/business/economy/17gramm.html) U.S. Senator Phil Gramm, Nov. 16, 2008

a more recent trip down memory lane. Gramm, remember, was brought on as an adviser to the presidential campaign of John McCain (http://archive.fortune.com/2008/02/18/news/newsmakers/tully_gramm.fortune/index.htm) in 2008. As the economy was stumbling that summer, Gramm said:

“You’ve heard of mental depression; this is a mental recession. We may have a recession; we haven’t had one yet. We have sort of become a nation of whiners. You just hear this constant whining, complaining about a loss of competitiveness, America in decline.”

At that point, the financial crisis was gathering headway: foreclosures had doubled in the span of a year, 1.6 million more people were unemployed (http://www.bls.gov/opub/ted/2008/aug/wk1/art01.htm) than a year earlier, the stock market had plunged 25 percent and the nation was already eight months into the worst recession (http://www.nber.org/cycles.html) since the Great Depression. McCain, in a vain effort to rescue his campaign, had to immediately disavow the remarks (http://www.nbcnews.com/id/25628205/ns/politics-decision_08/t/mccain-criticizes-advisers-whiners-remark/#.VvKEa5MrKV4). Gramm, meanwhile, refused to retract his comments. He was gone from the McCain campaign a few days later.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but I believe — as do many others — that

Gramm was one of the major figures who helped set the stage for the crisis. My book “Bailout Nation (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0470596325/thebigpictu09-20)” included a list of “Who is to Blame for the Crisis (http://ritholtz.com/2009/06/who-is-to-blame-1-25/)” that put Gramm at No. 3 after former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan and the Fed itself.

I’m not alone:Time (http://content.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,1877351_1877350_1877330,00.html) magazine placed him at No. 2, while CNN ranked (http://ac360.blogs.cnn.com/2008/10/14/culprits-of-the-collapse-7-phil-gramm/)him No. 7.

Just to be clear, Gramm was but one player in the debacle and blame for the financial crisis is spread far and wide, extending to major figures in both political parties.

about one of the NASTIEST episodes in modern American history:

Ted Cruz national security adviser Lopez: Joe McCarthy was 'spot-on' in hunt for secret communists (http://www.dailykos.com/stories/2016/3/23/1505008/-Ted-Cruz-national-security-adviser-Lopez-Joe-McCarthy-was-spot-on-in-hunt-for-secret-communists)

Here is Clare Lopez, one of Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz's "national security advisers (http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/cruz-national-security-adviser-joseph-mccarthy-was-spot#sthash.fYKJoD0d.dpuf)."

“[Muslim Brotherhood] affiliates and associates and those connected to it are the go-to advisers, if not appointees, for the top levels of national security in our government, in this administration for sure, but going back many decades, really, is the program of this Brotherhood,” she claimed.

Clare Lopez, a member of insane person Frank Gaffney's conspiracy-riddled Center for Security Policy, is arguing here that the Muslim Brotherhood has been slowly taking control of our government because—well, it's all very complicated, but the short version is because Frank Gaffney only surrounds himself with conspiracy-minded lunatics with too much time on their hands and only tenuous connections to the physical dimensions that the rest of us inhabit. Frank Gaffney is also one of Ted Cruz's national security advisers, because of course he is.

Christian supremacist theocrat always inciting paranoia, and hate against all Muslims

Ted Cruz resorts to rhetoric about ‘no-go zones’

In January, not long after the terrorist attack in Paris, Fox News’ Steven Emerson had a deeply unfortunate (http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/uks-cameron-calls-fox-pundit-complete-idiot), and internationally ridiculed, exchange about England’s Muslim population, for which he later apologized. But of particular interest was Emerson’s argument (http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2015/01/expert-sorry-for-making-up-facts-about-islam.html) that Britain has “no-go zones … where non-Muslims just simply don’t go in.”

The problem, of course, is that this was plainly wrong. Fox News went so far as to issue an on-air correction (http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/fox-apology-muslim-no-go-zones), telling viewers there is “no credible information to support the assertion” that “no-go zones” exist in Europe.

But Republican presidential candidates don’t need credible information to make false assertions. Bobby Jindal, for example, spent some time last year warning audiences (http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/jindal-stuck-after-spreading-discredited-myth) about “no-go zones” in Western Europe, despite the fact that they don’t exist.

This week, in an op-ed (http://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/ted-cruz-bill-bratton-wrong-terrorism-article-1.2580401) for the New York Daily News, Ted Cruz embraced the same talking point (via Hunter (http://www.dailykos.com/stories/2016/3/29/1507670/-Ted-Cruz-pens-conspiracy-addled-screed-doubling-down-on-proposal-to-secure-Muslim-neighborhoods)).

One of the causes of this horror has been European bureaucrats restraining law enforcement from fully engaging with the Muslim community in “no go” zones. As a result, for years, a radical, theocratic, violent ideology has spread in some mosques and Muslim neighborhoods throughout Europe. Terrorists have exploited these isolated enclaves to recruit followers, formulate plots and orchestrate attacks. […]

There is no better example of these “no go” zones than one neighborhood in the city of this latest horrific attack – the municipality of Molenbeek in the city of Brussels.

To be sure, Molenbeek’s security significance matters a great deal (http://www.vox.com/world/2016/3/22/11284176/brussels-attacks-terrorism), but to suggest that non-Muslims simply don’t go to the city is ridiculous – Muslim residents make up “around 25 to 30 percent (http://www.vox.com/world/2016/3/22/11284176/brussels-attacks-terrorism)” of the area’s population.

Why in the world do American conservatives keep pointing to “zones” that don’t exist? Because this is part of a domestic agenda.

Note, for example, that Cruz’s op-ed (http://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/ted-cruz-bill-bratton-wrong-terrorism-article-1.2580401) went on to argue, “Many European leaders are now recognizing that passively allowing the Islamist threat to fester was a serious error.

We cannot make the same mistakes in America. In the wake of the Brussels attacks, I called for vigorously guarding against the political correctness that has plagued Europe.”

Well, what Cruz actually called for was empowering law enforcement to “patrol and secure Muslim neighborhoods (http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/us-candidates-responses-brussels-terrorism-speak-volumes)” in the United States – a rather ridiculous proposal that drew sharp rebukes from, among others, law enforcement (http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/cruzs-patrol-and-secure-plan-goes-bad-worse) and President Obama (http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/obama-issues-strong-rebuke-cruzs-patrol-and-secure-plan).

The point, of course, is to make Americans as afraid as possible, even if that means pointing to European “zones” that don’t exist, as a way to justify policies in the U.S. that far-right policymakers want anyway: a more expansive surveillance state, blocking refugees, immigration restrictions, etc.

But to get there, politicians like Cruz find it necessary to throw around references to imaginary “no-go zones,” because the truth isn’t nearly scary enough to produce the results the right wants.

Cruz makes his case against an abortion rape exception

Last year, Marco Rubio raised a few eyebrows when he argued (http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/rubio-sharpens-far-right-position-reproductive-rights) that if a woman is impregnated by a rapist, the government has the authority to force her to take the pregnancy to term, regardless of her wishes. This week, Ted Cruz made clear he has the same position.

During an interview with Fox News’ Megyn Kelly, the host sought clarification from the Texas senator about this controversial aspect of his platform. From the transcript via Lexis Nexis:

KELLY: [Y]ou don’t favor a rape or an incest exception to abortion and for people like me, this may be a problem in getting behind President Ted Cruz. They think you may be too far right on social issues.

CRUZ: Well, listen, let’s talk – you know, when it comes to rape, I’ve spent a lot of years in law enforcement. I was the solicitor general in the state of Texas and I have handled cases with horrific cases of rape, of people who committed child rape, people – I went before the U.S. Supreme Court and argued in defense of state laws imposing capital punishment for the very worst child rapists. And when it comes to rape, rape is a horrific crime against the humanity of a person and needs to be punished and punished severely but at the same time, as horrible as that crime is, I don’t believe it’s the child’s fault. And we weep at the crime. We want to do everything we can to prevent the crime on the front end and to punish the criminal, but I don’t believe it makes sense to blame the child.

The host responded that people who support exceptions to an abortion ban will argue that Cruz’s policy would force women “to go through unspeakable trauma to carry her rapist’s baby for nine months.” The senator then changed the subject a bit, saying states should debate their own limits on reproductive rights.

When it comes to evaluating Cruz as a general-election contender, the senator is extremely far to the right on most of the major issues of the day, and this is no exception – some polling suggests 83% of Americans believe women impregnated by a rapist should be legally allowed to terminate that pregnancy.

The ‘Personhood’ problem Ted Cruz doesn’t know how to solve

when it comes to formidable Republicans, Ted Cruz wouldn’t be much better (http://www.msnbc.com/msnbc/cruz-refuses-answer-personhood-during-msnbc-town-hall).

Ted Cruz refused to answer eight direct questions Thursday about whether or not he’d support personhood bills – legislation that would give Constitutional rights to fertilized eggs – despite pledging to support it last year.
“I told you I’m not going to get into the labels, but what I will say is we should protect life. But I’m not interested in anything that restricts birth control,” he said after being pressed at length by Chuck Todd in the MSNBC town hall that will air in full Thursday at 8 p.m.

“And I’m not interested in anything that restricts in vitro fertilization because I think parents who are struggling to create life, to have a child, that is a wonderful thing.”

Chuck Todd, to his credit, made a valiant effort to get a straight answer out of the Texas senator. Cruz, an experienced lawyer, wouldn’t budge.

And we know why. Last summer, en route to picking up an endorsement from a far-right group, Ted Cruz signed a pledge (http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/ted-cruz-renews-pledge-radical-personhood-amendment) promising to “support a personhood amendment to the U.S. Constitution.”

As Right Wing Watch reported (http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/ted-cruz-renews-pledge-radical-personhood-amendment) at the time, the document the Republican presidential candidate signed affirmed the belief that “a continuum of human life and personhood begins at the moment of fertilization.” By endorsing the pledge, Cruz gave his word to protect “the civil rights of the pre-born at an embryonic or fetal level.”

In practical terms, as long-time readers no doubt recall, we’re not just talking about a policy that bans abortions – though that’s part of it.

“Personhood” policies also put at risk common forms of birth control.
What’s more, this wasn’t the first time Cruz expressed support for these kinds of policies.

The far-right senator voted against (http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=113&session=2&vote=00228) a measure to protect workers’ access to contraception in 2014, and in 2013, he referred to common forms of birth-control as “abortifacients (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/10/11/ted-cruz-birth-control_n_4084857.html).”

And so we’re left with something of a contradiction.

On the one hand, Ted Cruz says he isn’t interested in “anything that restricts birth control” or IVF treatments.

On the other hand, Ted Cruz has publicly pledged to try to change the United States Constitution to protect embryos as Americans with civil rights, which would very likely restrict birth control and IVF.

How does Cruz reconcile the competing positions? By saying he doesn’t want to talk about it.

"religious liberty" is a dog-whistle for Christ-inspired hate of and discrimination against (black, brown, poor) women's vaginas and LGBT.

"religious liberty" is as much of a coded lie as are "states rights", "law and order", "hard on crime", "welfare queens in cadillacs", "young bucks", etc.

Ted Cruz Just Reminded The Republican Establishment Why They Hate Him

He told CNBC on Friday (http://www.cnbc.com/2016/04/15/ted-cruz-my-no-1-priority-as-president-is-economic-growth.html) that he wants to push America back to the gold standard. This is a hare-brained policy that no other country uses and not a single surveyed economist (http://www.igmchicago.org/igm-economic-experts-panel/poll-results?SurveyID=SV_cw1nNUYOXSAKwrq) thinks is a good idea. Under the gold standard, a dollar is worth a certain amount of gold.

That’s great, you might think: the value of the dollar will be stable. But the exact opposite is true; gold is a commodity and its price, driven by supply and demand and speculation, swings wildly.

Under the gold standard, a central bank like the Federal Reserve would have to raise and cut interest rates not based on how well the economy is doing, but what’s going on in the gold market.

It’s a good way to run a modern economy into the ground. (The inflexibility of the gold standard caused (http://www.nber.org/papers/w2198.pdf) the Great Depression (http://www.nber.org/papers/w2198.pdf).)

And yet Cruz thinks the gold standard is a great policy.

Republican economic plan gets the wrong kind of endorsement

Early on in Jeb Bush’s ill-fated presidential campaign, the former Florida governor came up with an idea that would serve as the centerpiece of his entire candidacy: 4% GDP growth (http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/economic-debate-gop-pulling-numbers-out-thin-air) in his first term. The problem – well, one of the many problems – was that this wasn’t so much an idea as an outlandish goal that no modern president has achieved, even during economic booms.

Team Jeb admitted (http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/jeb-bush-demonstrates-the-opposite-economic-wonkery) at the time that the 4% figure wasn’t based on any kind of meaningful policy analysis. Bush just liked the sound of it, so his aides built much of his campaign around the made-up figure.

Worse, it started a bidding war of sorts. Chris Christie (http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/the-dubious-number-wont-go-away), basing his projections on nothing but wishful thinking, said his plan would also create 4% growth. Scott Walker (https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/the-skys-the-limit/2015/08/17/2775682a-4518-11e5-8ab4-c73967a143d3_story.html?postshare=7961439861155251 ) vowed to deliver 4.5% growth.

As it turns out, they’re not the only candidates who can pull meaningless numbers out of thin air. Ted Cruz told CNBC (http://video.cnbc.com/gallery/?video=3000509962&play=1) on Friday morning that his agenda will lead to “a minimum of 5% GDP growth.”

That, however, wasn’t the funny part. Rather, Salon’s Simon Maloy highlighted (http://www.salon.com/2016/04/18/ted_cruzs_5_percent_flim_flam_his_latest_economic_ promise_is_a_real_laugher/) the angle that stood out for me.

…Cruz has an influential ally in his corner: Art Laffer, the high priest of trickle-down economics, who helped craft Cruz’s plan. “Cruz’s tax plan is better than Reagan’s,” Laffer told CNN. :lol

“I think you’ll get growth rates higher than Reagan’s.”

A good rule of thumb is that whenever you see Art Laffer extolling the amazing economic impact of a tax-cut package, assume the opposite will happen.

Yes, when Art Laffer endorses an economic plan, the appropriate response is, “Uh oh.”

Circling back to some of our previous coverage (http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/being-discredited-not-always-barrier-success) of Laffer’s reputation, regular readers may recall (http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/demand-gop-economist-says-kansas-doing-fine) that the Republican economist rose to GOP prominence in the 1980s by pushing the celebrated-but-wrong idea that tax cuts can pay for themselves.

More recently, he served as the architect of Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback’s (R) failed right-wing economic experiment, which destroyed state finances and did little to improve the state’s economy. Laffer vowed that Brownback’s plan would generate “enormous prosperity,” which is largely the opposite of what’s actually happened.

When the the GOP governor’s agenda failed to deliver on any of the guaranteed results, Laffer was pressed for an explanation. “Kansas is doing fine,” he boasted. :lol

Kansas is not doing fine (http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/bad-worse-sam-brownbacks-kansas).

About a year ago, Paul Krugman added some helpful context (http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/04/10/the-laffer-swerve/) to Laffer’s record.

Since the 1970s there have been four big changes in the effective tax rate on the top 1 percent: the Reagan cut, the Clinton hike, the Bush cut, and the Obama hike. Republicans are fixated on the boom that followed the 1981 tax cut (which had much more to do with monetary policy, but never mind). But they predicted dire effects from the Clinton hike; instead we had a boom that eclipsed Reagan’s. They predicted wonderful things from the Bush tax cuts; instead we got an unimpressive expansion followed by a devastating crash. And they predicted terrible things from the tax rise after Obama’s reelection; instead we got the best job growth since 1999.

And when I say “they predicted”, I especially mean Laffer himself, who has a truly extraordinary record of being wrong at crucial turning points. As Bruce Bartlett pointed out a few years ago, Laffer was even wrong during the Reagan years: he predicted that the Reagan tax hikes of 1982, which partially reversed earlier cuts, would cripple the economy; “morning in America” promptly followed. Oh, and let’s not forget his 2009 warnings about soaring interest rates and inflation.

Politics really isn’t supposed to work this way. When someone fails spectacularly, he or she is supposed to quietly go away, not offer guidance on the issue that left them looking ridiculous.

And yet, Art Laffer is not only still helping design economic policies that don’t work, he’s also publicly endorsing proposals from a 2016 presidential candidate – as if his credibility is intact.

Caveat emptor.

More Krazy Kruz Krazy Ekonomic, sociopathic bullshit

Cruz sees the minimum wage as ‘bad policy’

then there’s the other side of the aisle. Congressional Republicans continue to insist there will be no increase so long as the GOP is in the majority, and on the presidential campaign trail, Republican candidates continue to not only oppose an increase, but to oppose the very existence of the minimum wage. Politico reported (http://www.politico.com/blogs/2016-gop-primary-live-updates-and-results/2016/04/ted-cruz-minimum-wage-222007) the other day:

Ted Cruz assailed the concept of minimum wage as “bad policy” on Friday, suggesting that companies will ultimately choose machines over humans when it becomes more cost-efficient to do so.

“I think the minimum wage systematically hurts the most vulnerable,” the Texas senator said in an interview on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.” … “I think it’s bad policy,” Cruz added.

The senator said states should have the authority to approve their own minimums if they choose, but Cruz nevertheless suggested that the federal minimum shouldn’t exist at all.

Or put another way, while the Democrats fight over $12 vs. $15, Cruz likes the idea of $0, at least as far as federal policymaking is concerned.

This is the first election cycle in modern times in which opposition to the existence of the minimum wage has become quite common.

Four years after Mitt Romney actually endorsed an increase – it was probably the most progressive element of his platform – and

nine years after then-President George W. Bush actually signed a wage hike,

Marco Rubio (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2013/02/13/marco-rubio-i-dont-think-a-minimum-wage-law-works/) and Carly Fiorina (http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/carly-fiorina-sees-minimum-wage-unconstitutional) this cycle both said the federal minimum wage shouldn’t exist.

Ted Cruz appears to believe the same thing.

We’re not talking about fringe figures in American politics. There’s a chance Cruz may even be the GOP nominee.

Cruz won’t ban sex toys as president

Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz (http://thehill.com/people/ted-cruz) says he won’t ban the sale of sex toys if he’s president, BuzzFeed News reported Friday (http://www.buzzfeed.com/andrewkaczynski/ted-cruz-says-he-wont-ban-dildos-if-he-becomes-president#.lfwmm3le4).

“What people do in their own private time with themselves is their own business and it’s none of the government’s business,” Cruz told WABC radio host Curtis Sliwa.

Sliwa asked Cruz if he would ban “the sale of sexual toys, dildos, or anything that sexually stimulates you,” after Mother Jones (http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2016/04/ted-cruz-dildo-ban-sex-devices-texas) revealed that Cruz defended a ban on the sale of dildos as Texas’s solicitor general. “Look, of course not, it’s a ridiculous question, and of course not,” Cruz added.

A brief co-authored by Cruz at the time said there is no "substantive-due-process right to stimulate one’s genitals."

Ted Cruz (http://www.hollywoodlife.com/tag/ted-cruz), 45, may have found his long lost twin sister thanks to a recent episode of The Maury Povich Show (http://www.hollywoodlife.com/tag/the-maury-povich-show). If you think that the crying woman above is Ted Cruz, or somehow related to Ted Cruz (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0062365614/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0062365614&linkCode=as2&tag=hollywoocom-20&linkId=RQIXSXGJZPZCZMLG), we have bad news for you: she’s not. It’s actually a random woman who happened to be a guest on The Maury Povich Show. The subject of her segment? “5 Men Tested… Will I Find My Daughter’s Father Today?” Yikes.

Of course, something this funny could not exist on the internet without an uproar from the masses. In this case it was mostly Twitter who couldn’t believe their eyes, and slowly but surely hilarious memes began to circulate and go viral. Unfortunately for Ted, this is happening on April 19, which happens to be the New York state primary election. He should be winning votes, not memes!

A day later, the Cruz-Kasich alliance starts to unravel

Yesterday morning, Ted Cruz boasted that his new agreement with John Kasich was “big news (http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2016/apr/25/cruz-big-news-kasich-decided-pull-out-indiana/).” Around the same time, John Kasich assured reporters that his new agreement with Ted Cruz was “no big deal (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpXjOOdRiuE).” The competing messages were the first sign that this Republican marriage of convenience was off to a rough start.

At least in theory, the plan, if executed effectively, could work to the candidates’ benefit. As wediscussed (http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/cruz-and-kasich-hatch-scheme-latest-polls-bolster-trump) yesterday, the point is to consolidate the anti-Trump vote in specific states to increase the odds of a contested convention: Cruz is stronger in Indiana, so Kasich would agree pull back there, and Kasich is stronger in Oregon and New Mexico, so Cruz would give up competing in these states.

But as MSNBC’s Leigh Ann Caldwell reported, it only took hours before the alliance started to fray (http://www.msnbc.com/msnbc/cruz-and-kasich-not-completely-devoted-cruz-kasich-alliance).

[A]t a diner in Philadelphia Monday morning, Kasich said he wouldn’t direct his voters to support Cruz in the Hoosier State – a critical decision that could have the most weight in the state.

“I’ve never told them not to vote for me. They ought to vote for me, but I’m not over there campaigning and spending resources,” Kasich said. The Ohio governor will still be on the ballot in Indiana.

It is becoming apparent that this is an agreement between the two campaigns to hold their fire against each other in just three states – and a directive for the outside groups backing them to do the same.

This isn’t to say a non-aggression pact is meaningless, but the Cruz-Kasich alliance was supposed to advance a larger goal: undermining Trump before it’s too late. It took less than half a day, however, for Kasich to say his supporters in Indiana should most definitely vote for him, which is pretty much the opposite of the message he was supposed to make after striking a deal with Cruz. Indeed, Kasich’s message also contradicted what his campaign co-chair in Indiana told local media (https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/cruz-kasich-strike-tenuous-deal-in-attempt-to-slow-down-trump/2016/04/25/3ed573b0-0afd-11e6-8ab8-9ad050f76d7d_story.html) yesterday morning.

And sure enough, a Cruz super PAC said soon after that it would leave an anti-Kasich television ad on the air (https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/cruz-kasich-strike-tenuous-deal-in-attempt-to-slow-down-trump/2016/04/25/3ed573b0-0afd-11e6-8ab8-9ad050f76d7d_story.html).

There was already ample discussion about whether the Cruz-Kasich agreement was hatched too late to make a significant difference, but as yesterday came to a close, the discussion had turned – to whether or not a Cruz-Kasich agreement still existed in any meaningful form.

The “Never Trump” forces felt a renewed sense of hope 24 hours ago. Unfortunately for them, their optimism appears to have been premature.

When Donald Trump beats you, the process is akin to having a vampire drain you of blood. Only in Trump's case, in beating you, he drains you of any remaining dignity before the end. I'm kinda hoping one or both of them slips on a banana peel, making a new entrant possible. Candidate X might do well against Trump or Clinton.

no new entrants possible. Bishop Gekko filing with FEC, hoping to get in via contested convention, would have had the Repugs solidly for him again.

Trump has 98% of the required delegates.

ain't gonna be no new entrant possible because no contesting.

What happens to Cruz's 548 delegates now? Will he release them or hold on like Rubio, hoping to release them to a non-Trump?

My much more realistic hope is that Bernie comes so close to Hillz in non-super-delegates, so that Hill'z historically bad unfavorability ratings, plus the huge significance of independents excluded from closed primaries, make her supers doubt her reliability to win even vs. Trump. They switch to Bernie, and he gets it.

But, even there, the super delegates are "establishment" Dems, and so would vote their own best interests and incomes on Hillz, not what the people want.

I doubt the Repugs' push of the FBI/DoJ to indict will happen before the convention. They want to destroy Hillz AFTER she the nominee.

Just another nasty, treasonous, murderous October surprise, like Nixon scuttling Johnson's Paris Peace Talks, and Reagan scuttling Carter's release of the hostages.

The Repugs see that Bernie polls as beating Trump even worse than Hillz, and they have no way of destroying Bernie but would slander him as Marxist/Leninist/USSR totalitarian Communist. So they want Bernie out of the way at the Dem convention, then indict Hillz after the convention.

In the end, all of it doesn't matter, because the Repugs will control (enough of) Congress (thanks to Kock Bros, VRWC heavily financing Congressional races) and will keep SCOTUS at 4-4 rather than approve a Dem appointee, and so will block ANY serious governing, problem solving, advancing of American people.

And the rigged economy, the inequality will continue to fuck over the 99% for years and years.

America is fucked and unfuckable. Thanks, VRWC/Repugs/SCOTUS (and feckless Dems)

Another Kruz "basketball ring"-style malapropism

Cruz drops out of GOP race: 'We gave it everything we've got'

http://komonews.com/news/nation-world/cruz-drops-out-of-gop-primary-after-indiana-loss-to-trump

For national champion debating champion and word-smithing lawyer, Krazy Kruz has real problems with conventional, idiomatic Ingles.

If you "gave it everything", you don't have "it" anymore. You gave it, it's gone.

iow, you HAD IT.

the idiomatic expression is:

"We gave it everything we had"

We "had" it back then, so we don't "have got it" anymore. :lol

A symptom of fucking solipsistic asshole who only listens to the shit inside his own head

I noticed it too, but I didn't think it actually deserved to have an article written about it. Of all the things wrong with his message, that was the least of my concerns.

Flagrant 2! self-ejected, opponent gets two free throws at the basketball ring, and possession.

He won't miss much, Mult: No Blacks tearing Black ass down to the end zone to pose after a TD...with attendant White players bringing up the rear so they don't get outed as being anti Black>>>that's the best part of the TD...just knowing the White wives demanding..."Just shut up and go down there and don't forget to bring me the per diem. Get your White ass down there, and I mean it, honey!"

No Blacks working their asses off to take an offensive foul, but can't be bothered to play defense an iota.

When LeBron comes to Texas you don't have to watch the carcass of Minnesota Floyd attached to LeBron's Black ass.

Well played JFK, well played, getting back at your assassin's family.

Though it didn't stop JFK's family from teaching little John-John how to salute his old man as said old man lay in the other room with half his head blown off.

As Effy yourself is wont to say from time-to-time: JFK fucked around in Texas: where he was stated Public Enemy #1!, & the pussy hound, the slick SOB found out.

Well, as it currently stands, I'm highly discouraged from ever making $150K or more. Holy shit, 40%?

:lol you don't know how taxes work, do you?

I got it from the Economist link.

"The plan burnishes Mr Trump’s Republican credentials by giving high earners whacking tax cuts. Individuals earning more than $150,000 will see their marginal tax rate fall from close to 40% now to 25%"

Right. So you don't know how taxes work. The term "marginal" is the key. Look it up.

Yeah, because nobody understands marginal tax rates. The maths are so hard!

Anyone who would make that first statement does not know how marginal tax rates work. Period. End of discussion.
