And no, Pop hasnt got outcoached Spurs still running better sets but the athletic talent disparity is hurting. Kiwi and Maybe Green are only guys that are still in the class of athlete that Blake and DJ are ... not saying they are close but at least they can compete ...

that right there is the main reason they lost though the clips are running around the court with defensive "energy." They're best runs were from made threes after all. And the Spurs just missed wide open threes. If they continue on that shitty clip they won't win. That combined with Ebola patient having his usual bullshit show was ballgame

u make a late run with kawhi, mills and belli hittin 3 3s to get the lead down to 12

then u go and chuck in that turd enrique for mills, then lead goes back up

seriously enrique does nothing on offense when his shots aint falling, especially when the team is daring him to shoot, all he does is dribble down the clock and n othing else on defense...at leasts mills provides shooting, spacing, and hustle defence...

But I wont over-react. Repeating is one of the hardest things to do in sports. Shit was never gonna be easy. That is why I LOL at the overconfidence around here. I picked Spurs vs. Cavs but I didnt think it would be easy

LnGrrrR

Well, the question becomes, do you count each year as a "repeat" or not? Did the Bulls of '93 count as a team that didn't repeat (technically fourpeat), or did they get a pass because they repeated already?

Edit: Did the math, and I see that as long as you repeated, then losing at the end didn't count. Math checks out, actually.

Of course, it's curious that he chose the year 1987... I wonder why...

Oh maybe because

NO TEAM REPEATED FROM 1970 to 1987. (technically 1988, as Lakers didn't repeat until then)

Makes his argument slightly less impressive when you change the cutoff date.

8. Heat

Teams that did not repeat:

3. Pistons
4. Spurs 3x

I do think repeating is impressive and tough but the reality both Bird's celts and Duncan's Spurs are still dynasties without it. And is not fault on their legacies. Where I think it hurts is the GOAT team arguments the 1986 Celts and I think in timde the 2014 Spurs will look at as historic individual seasons two of the best I have seen. But I do think MJ's bulls and shaqobe Lakers get a little extra credit on their resume ... but it's all debatable.

Level of dominance. A team able to win 2 to 3 consecutive Championships is dominating a period of time

This is one big reason why the Spurs are somewhat playing 2nd fiddle to the Lakers or even Heat in the medias eyes. Without a Repeat: which Spurs team was the best? Which team do you showcase? Each one is treated individually which puts it in the group with Mavericks, Shaq's Heat, Billup's Pistons.

Legacy wise, it would probably be best for the Spurs to Repeat and retire. Then people will forever debate whether they could win the 3-peat.

My point being, unless the Spurs atleast repeat, they won't be included in many peoples eyes as "The Most Dominant". Instead they are one of the most consistent. Outside of this forum, people don't view the 2014 Spurs as some kind of GOAT team. It's more "Well the Heat were tired from the previous 3 Finals appearances and Thunder grossly overrated".

Look at how the Giants are treated in Baseball. They have won 3 in 5 years.

A lot of this. Giants (hate those guys) have been one of the most dominant teams in recent sports ...but not repeating has made it less prominent. I get what Amb is saying that each individual season can be viewed as such but gain as Infinite says to really capture a significant place you have to repeat unless you are the 1985 Bears, 1986 Celts, 1983 Sixers but not sure those teams are considered as dominant as the repeaters (of that era).

As for the spurs who this wasnt truly about initially ... Birds celts is probably the closest comparisonas far as eras. Spurs have won more rings, maintained an elite level longer and Celts never repeated either. Should a case be made that the spurs big 3 is greater than the Celts (not just by ring count)?

And where does Duncan/Pop Spurs rank vs. Magic's lakers? 5 rings to 5 ... more than a decade of elite play. Of course Im taking Showtime... but it's close and I think the repeat does give the Lakers a slight edge. But before the past few seasons I would have said such talk was crazy.

Very convoluted logic.

Take it on an individual basis. If a player had the greatest season in NBA history one year, then got injured the next, was he some how less great the previous season? Extend this to a team, and there you go.

Level of dominance. A team able to win 2 to 3 consecutive Championships is dominating a period of time

You are talking about a prolonged period of dominance assuming the exact same team, and has nothing to do with the dominance of a team over a single year.

Besides, the Spurs won 5 championships over less than two decades with Pop and Duncan as the only common thread, had 3 championships over a 5 years period with the same core, and yet that is less dominant than, say the Rockets because the Rockets won b2b?

This is one big reason why the Spurs are somewhat playing 2nd fiddle to the Lakers or even Heat in the medias eyes. Without a Repeat: which Spurs team was the best? Which team do you showcase? Each one is treated individually which puts it in the group with Mavericks, Shaq's Heat, Billup's Pistons.

No, it was because the Lakers are in LA, the Heat are in Miami, and the Spurs are in San Antonio. There really isn't any way around that. The media has absolutely no problem ranking the 08 Celtics as one of the best team of all time (defensively) despite the lack of a b2b, or the fact that a few Spurs championship teams had better defensive numbers than them. It's because they are from Boston.

As for which Spurs team was the best, it really depends on rules and era. I would say the 05 team was the best with Ginobili in his prime, Parker close to his prime, and Duncan (albeit injured) still close to his prime. But the 2014 team was special in the sense of how effectively the system was ran.

Legacy wise, it would probably be best for the Spurs to Repeat and retire. Then people will forever debate whether they could win the 3-peat.
If the Spurs repeat, the knock is that they won't be able to three peat (or the league stinks now, etc ....), if the Spurs three peat, the knock will be they won't be able to win 8 straight and 10 of 11 like the Russell Celtics, or that the Spurs is just a step ahead of the transition from an individually dominated system to a team approach and such. If your team is from SA, you will ALWAYS have your legacy questioned.

What are in people's eyes aren't really that important, and these type of descriptions were clearly used to push people's agendas. Your "Garnett was more influential than Duncan" post was a clear indication of that. It's like saying Jordan was dominant, but he wasn't the best leader at all talk, or the Spurs were boring talk. It's just these random knocks that cannot possibly be backed up to raise the ire of the opposition, and it's retarded at best.

I agree, And I said that prior. But if they did win this year it would change the feeling about that team to some degree and to some critics and that was my point a repeat is different.

I agree, And I said that prior. But if they did win this year it would change the feeling about that team to some degree and to some critics and that was my point a repeat is different.

BTW, I do think the 2014 spurs though had some of the best ball movement of any recent title team maybe the 2011 Mavs and 2004 Pistons are close (Shaqobe Lakers moved the ball great at times but to often became shaq pound or Kobe iso).

I think the the 86 Celts, the 2014 Spurs and 20111 Mavs to a lessor degree as the best at ball movement. Crazy thing is Pop and RC are two of the best coaches I have seen in the NBA. KC jones was good but not great. Extra points for Bird for making passing infectious. Only Punk ass McHale was a blackhole on that squad ...

86 as all Bird. I have never been a fan of KC Jones, and felt that it was more the quality of players than the coach himself.

As for perception, I agree that it will change, but it just isn't logical to do so, and at the end, I think we are on the same boat with regards to where the 2014 Spurs stand. The ball movement was spectacular, and I can only really think of the Walton Blazers and the Reed Knicks as the other comparisons. I didn't think the ball movement with the 04 Pistons was all that great. Billups was a huge piece of their offense, and Rasheed was a phenomenal passer (very underrated player), but other than that, the other players were all that special. Larry Brown was a great coach, too bad he was such a horrible GM and impatient person, or he would have been collecting rings in multiple places over his career instead of "only" having one.

The Mavs had great ball movement, but still, at the end, Dirk bails them out a lot.

and I never saw that 77 team but I hear they had great passing ... I dont judge teams I never saw.

You got to dig up some tapes, just a phenomenal team. You probably can't watch 30 of their games, but if you can get a hand on their finals run, it was something else.

Stat of the half? Clippers have only shot two FTs. Spurs haven't been that good defensively, but they've done a great job at not fouling.

Jordan is still in the Spurs' heads outside Tim, and Crawford can get hot whenever. Timmy also won't keep it up in the second half while Griffin will. Unless Mills is able to stay in the game and have an impact, Clippers prolly win.

Blake's definitely been carrying us, he's the only one who seems to realize how important this game is. Don't see Timmy falling off unless Enrique gets jealous and starts freezing him out in the second half, a la 6.
