Welp, might as well start this now. Indiana looks like shit (down 13 at the half) and they're on the road.

Thoughts on the series? Going to need a lot of Diaw IMO. He's going to have to make Blake work on defense and at least exert some effort.

CP3/DeAndre Jordan PnR is going to be a bitch to guard. I think Mills/Joseph will be important in this series.

For the fucking love of god: please Pop, don't try playing Belinelli on Redick or Crawford for extended periods

Pros:

- Parker loves playing vs. Paul
- Kawhi owns the Clippers
- Spurs struggle against long/athletic teams, Clippers are extremely unathletic on the wing
- Clippers are a below average defensive team
- Clippers have one of the 3-5 worst benches in the NBA
- Hack-a-Jordan is going to be huge in this series

Cons:

- No HCA
- Blake Griffin is going to destroy the Spurs with Splitter out
- Chris Paul's pick&roll/pop is going to cause a ton of problems with Splitter out, as we saw with the Pelicans tonight
- Spurs are going to struggle defending Reddick and Crawford off screens/curls with Splitter out
- Spurs were 22-19 on the road

On paper, the Spurs match up extremely well with the Clippers, but the HCA and more importantly, Splitter's calf are massive concerns..

http://hangtime.blogs.nba.com/2015/04/10/in-west-mix-home-court-advantage-not-necessarily-a-big-deal/

Since the league went to seven-game series in the first round in 2003, only 37 of 180 series (21 percent) have gone to seven games. And in only three of those series did the home team win all seven games. So in 177 of the 180, the winning team won at least one game on the road.

The home team won 28 of the 37 Game 7s. And going back to 1948, the home team has won 80 percent of the 119 Game 7s in NBA history. That seems like a daunting figure for any team that starts and ends a series on the road.

But the home team is often the much better team. The home-court advantage doesn’t show up as much when you’re looking at two teams that are evenly matched.

There have been 62 series (all rounds) since 2003 that were played between teams that were within *four games of each other in the regular season. And the team with home-court advantage has won only 29 (47 percent) of those 62 series.

https://turnernbahangtime.files.wordpress.com/2015/04/20150410_within_4.gif

Furthermore, 13 of those 62 series have gone to seven games, and eight of the 13 Game 7s (including each of the last three – see below) were won by the road team.

Last three Game 7s between teams that were within four wins of each other in the regular season:
— Brooklyn (road) over Toronto in 2014
— Chicago (road) over Brooklyn in 2013
— Clippers (road) over Memphis in 2012

If you go all the way back, the home team has won 30 of the 44 (68 percent) of Game 7s played between teams that were within *four wins of each other in the regular season. That’s a high percentage, but not as drastic as the 80 percent for all Game 7s. There are plenty of recent examples of good teams overcoming those odds and, as noted already, most series don’t get to Game 7.

*Adjusted for shorter seasons in the 50s and 60s.

This year, we could see three first round series played between teams that finish within four wins of each other: the 3-6 and 4-5 series in the West, along with the 4-5 series in the East (with Chicago, Toronto and Washington in the mix).

There’s no reason why those teams wouldn’t want home-court advantage. But in recent series played between equally good teams, it hasn’t proven to be a difference-maker.

Hill is a good player, much improved and continuing to grow, but he just isn't a PG..he should be a 6th man, or a small 2-guard..

Indiana is just extremely limited in talent..they're a classic "team that plays hard", but lose when the opposing team is playing with the same level of energy..

Just got back from game and I had great seats.

Anthony Davis was the best player on the court

Tyreke Evans came up big

Jrue Holliday played great defense

Duncan looked old. Effective at times, but not enough

Ginobili was ineffective except for one late 3 pt

Pelicans weren't allowing open 3 pt shots. They did a great job closing out

Parker's offense kept them in the game but his defense was atrocious

Bottom line - Pelicans needed it more and their home crowd was behind them.

Spurs offense wasn't flowing. A lot of passes were fumbled.

Jesus Christ. You would think the Clippers were a complete team that was well coached. Their bench consists of Austin Rivers, Jamal Crawford, Hedo Turkoglu, Big Baby, and Spencer Hawes. I would honestly rather play the Clippers than the Pelicans. Stick Green/Kawhi on CP3, hide TP on Matt Barnes, and play transition D and this thing is over in 5. I would be shocked if the Spurs didn't blow them out at least twice.

You people need to nut the fuck up.

Just like other team's fans don't remember various key Spurs injuries in various playoff failures over the years, people don't remember how especially Paul but Griffin too have been injured and not nearly at their best for the Clippers recently in the playoffs.

Those guys fully healthy is the biggest worry.

Clinging on to Paul being some kind of playoff choker illusion is false and stupid. We should expect them at their best and at their best they're arguably the 4th maybe even 3rd best team in the whole league (Warriors, Spurs then Cavs or Clippers). That is so far away from being a good first round matchup SIGH.

Like I said in the OP, if Pop pulls some shit like he did tonight and plays Belinelli for long periods of time guarding guys like Redick or Crawford, we're going to get torched. Also would like to see a bit more of CoJo in this series...his defense could be useful against CP3.

Fortunately, Paul/Clippers are a team Parker generally plays well against, and the Spurs can also hide him on Matt Barnes..obviously you always have to be concerned with Parker's playoff no-shows, but this shouldn't be a difficult series for him..

They also don't have a defensive wing to guard him with, as their wing defenders are shitty..

The Clippers, like the Blazers last year, are one of the few teams where playing Beli is at least somewhat justified so long as he's scoring. Matt Barnes isn't going to score on him. No reason not to feed Leonard the ball every single time he's on the court, let him score at will and draw double teams sucking in the defense.

This could be big for Leonard, get his confidence up there, a big series against the Clippers would be great for him. Last time Popovich had Mills/Bellinelli guarding Crawford, he needs to stick Cojo on him instead, idk how many minutes Mills will play this series.

If DeAndre can hit his foul shots, starters plus Crawford will combine for 90% of total minutes (36 minutes on average across the board, with Paul/Griffin playing more). If not, Hack-A-Jordan is in play.

Clippers will be very hard to come back on as they do hit their foul shots outside of Jordan. If the Spurs get into foul trouble early in a quarter, I'd go with Hack-A-Jordan ASAP. Otherwise, let things play out.

He won't be worn out, if you give him the ball in the post he's going to have a mismatch almost every time.

The Clippers don't have anybody that can guard him physically, look at their roster. Barnes/Crawford/Reddick, all these guys don't have the size to guard Leonard, every other bigger player usually plays PF, everyone else stands no chance. He's too quick for BG/Jordan on the perimeter, just a bad match up for LA.

You put him in the post, he's going to get within 5 feet of the rim, that happens, they swarm him, or else he scores. They swarm, he passes out to a wide open man. Even if they do force him to shoot it and he misses, he's there for a rebound, Leonard is the best rebounding SF in the league, he's going to be able to grab them over Reddick/Crawford/Barnes very easily.

If they run everything through Leonard, Spurs will win.

http://espn.go.com/nba/playoffs/2015/story/_/id/12700982/5-5-western-conference-playoff-preview

3. Clippers-Spurs will be ...Adande: An instant reckoning. Six months ago this seemed like a possible conference finals matchup. Instead, there's a credible threat to end the Spurs' reign of dominance, or to prompt a Clippers shakeup after one round of the playoffs. Home-court advantage and stellar seasons by Chris Paul (http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/2779/chris-paul) and DeAndre Jordan (http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/3442/deandre-jordan) give the Clippers a shot, but what have we learned about premature reports of the Spurs' demise? Spurs in six.

Pelton: A bloodbath. There's a case that these are two of the NBA's three best teams. The Clippers and Spurs finished second and third in the league in point differential, respectively. The winner of this series will be the greatest threat to Golden State in the Western Conference. I'd pick the Clippers in any other first-round matchup, but because of the way things played out, I'm taking Spurs in seven.

Shelburne: Epic. This has the potential to be the best first-round series of the playoffs. It's also the Warriors' dream scenario, as one of the two teams that had a real shot to knock them off will go out in Round 1. I thought the Clippers could make a run this season, but the Spurs should exploit their lack of depth and win this one in six.

Stein: Incredibly harsh on the team that loses. I can't pick against the reigning champs after watching San Antonio's 21-4 finishing kick‎ from Feb. 27 to the regular-season finish line, but don't forget that the Clips uncorked a 14-1 surge of their own into the postseason once they got Blake Griffin (http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/3989/blake-griffin) back. Mark this down as yet another win for the Warriors, because it means one of the two teams playing the best ball in the West outside of the Bay Area won't see Round 2.

Wallace: A slugfest. What's the reward the Clippers get for playing their best basketball of the season the past few weeks? A first-round date with the defending champions. That's a tough draw, but if Paul, Griffin and Jordan are desperate to take the next step toward title contention, it's essentially now or never. Yes, it's a very difficult draw, but the Clippers are out of excuses. The clash of contrasting styles should make this the most intriguing series in the first round.

As far as I'm concerned, getting the toughest possible road to the Finals is karma for Doc valuing shit like having all the power in the organization, giving paychecks to his aging Celtics/East cronies, and trying to save his son's failing career over winning.

Reggie Miller announcing game 1 might be the most depressing news yet tbh. Clippers in 4 now.

Even though last night's loss to the Pelicans nullified the significance of this play, Timmy's block on Harden was named #1 Defensive Play of the Year.

Anyone know the most popular Clips board?

Kawhi sets the tone, and Danny follows. Parker will be on the court doing something.

What do we make of the previous two meetings between the teams? Anything to take away from those games?

Feb 19 away L 115-119:
Spurs at full strength
TP goes for 21 and 13
Blake Griffin DNP
Deandre goes 10/28 from the FT line but the Clips still win.
Of course KL going 1/11 contributed mightily to that L

Jan 31 home L 85-105:
Spurs at full strength, (maybe Splitter was still recovering.)
Griffin goes for 31
Clippers basically lead from start to finish.

This could be big for Leonard, get his confidence up there, a big series against the Clippers would be great for him.

It's just the first round, it's a good matchup for him to go Kawhisolation early/often, and in Socal where his family can more easily travel and catch the games. Yeah, Kawhi should bust out with this scenario and it bodes well if this round gets him going-- could mean a deep run and another corner turned for Kawhi.

I was bitching about getting stuck with 6 and the Clips till I realized Kawhi is from there and probably will get a boost from playing in front of his friends classmates/coach and family in the region he grew up in. He's gonna feel right at home.

Even before the loss against the Pelicans, the Spurs hadn't been that great or sharp the two games before. Maybe there's a silver lining in that, though, maybe it renews a sense of urgency for the players that, I guess, can easily get lost a bit in the midst of a prolonged winning streak.

The Clippers could potentially be a very tough first-round opponent, but if the Spurs are playing close to their own potential ceiling, they will win this series. The Clippers have basically three players who can create shots for themselves or others (Paul, Blake, Crawford), and the Spurs have decent to really good defensive options against all three.
On the other hand, the Clippers will have their hands full defensively if our guys manage to maximize their offensive talent (which requires a finely balanced approach that isn't easily achieved).

From SI.com...

"In the last 12 games of the regular season, San Antonio pulled off the holy trinity of dominance, ranking No. 1 in net rating (17.9), offensive efficiency (113.3) and defensive efficiency (95.4)."
